The phenomena observed correspond to destruction rather than to formation of spin-correlations. They give rise to the progression from local ized ground states through Kondo and mixed-valence behaviour to itinerant magnetic or non-magnetic systems. Somewhere in the pro gression superconductivity can occur in the presence of f-moments. To bring together the disparate ideas and methods, previously the subject of intense debate only at a number of topical confer ences, a two-week Advanced Study Institute was held August 21 - September 02, 1983, at Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific, Vancouver Island. In the stimulating environment provided by the pines and fiord at the site of this remote United World College on the Canadian West Coast, scientists and students from around the globe gathered to hear lectures by experts. The Study Institute involved seventy-six people and followed in the tradition . of pre vious "Banff" summer schools organized by the Canadian Association of Physicists. It was made possible by grants from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the Natural Sciences & Engineering Research Council of Canada and Atomic Energy of Canada. The grants permitted many young scientists from Nato and non-Nato countries to learn the fundamentals as well as the latest results in the field.

But it is much more: During the ensuing six months, most of the pa{>ers were rewritten, polished, and/or expanded; so the resulting book is a much more fimshed, comprehensive, and up-to-date product than a general proceedings. Chapter se~uences follow the original symposium program, which, with a few exceptions, juxtaposes like topics. Each chapter can stand more or less on its own-although, as in any complex, interrelated scientific field, there are many cross-references among chapters. The manuscripts were edited and then uniformly typed in the Department of Chemistry at Michigan State University. I tried to keep the editing to a minimum so as to preserve the flavor of individual styles. Citizens are very sensitive to environmental contextual factors such as the title 'President' preceding 'Obama' in a newspaper headline, upbeat music or patriotic symbols accompanying a campaign ad, or question wording and order in a survey, all of which have their greatest influence when citizens are unaware. This book develops and tests a dual-process theory of political beliefs, attitudes and behavior, claiming that all thinking, feeling, reasoning and doing have an automatic component as well as a conscious deliberative component. The authors are especially interested in the impact of automatic feelings on political judgments and evaluations. This research is based on laboratory experiments, which allow the testing of five basic hypotheses: hot cognition, automaticity, affect transfer, affect contagion and motivated reasoning.

It is one of the two surviving languages of the Yukaghir family, which is considered by different scholars either as an isolate left over from before the expansion of other languages and language families into Siberia, or as a distant relative of the Uralic family. In many ways, Yukaghir fits the grammatical type widespread among the languages of Siberia, namely that of predominantly verb-final dependent-marking language with relatively rich agglumative morphology and deranking strategies of clause linking. Furthermore, it has a number of typologically remarkably features, which will be of interest to general linguists irrespective of their theoretical orientation. These include Yukaghir focus-marking system, differential object marking based on global effects of person hierarchy, the obligatory use of bound possesive markers to indicate non-coreference of the possessor with the subject, elaborated switch-reference system, initimate interaction between aspect and valence-changing derivation, etc. The book incorporates all major components of descriptive grammar, from phonology to syntax, with a special chapter on coreference and discourse coherence, annotated and translated sample texts, a Yukaghir-English vocabulary, and a subject index. The description is based on extensive field materials and richly exemplified by non-elicited data. The organization of the book facilitates its use as a reference grammar, with numerous cross-references between sections and concise summaries of interrelated phenomena discussed in various parts of the grammar. The book is of interest to scholars of Uralic and Siberian languages, linguistic typology, and general linguistics.
