Book excerpt: A murderous game. The killer makes the rules. Death hangs on the roll of the dice. In murder investigations, it pays to keep things simple: motive, method, opportunity. But the case in front of Detective Fabian Risk is a nightmare. A killer who strikes out of nowhere. No apparent motive. No consistent method. Victims are tortured, strangled, burned, dismembered – each grisly killing carried out with savage precision, as if following the rules of a hellish game. Fear and chaos have spread through the seaside town of Helsingborg. While Fabian Risk hunts the killer, his life is falling apart: a son on the run from the law; a daughter gravely injured; a colleague with dark secrets of his own. But there's no turning back now. The game of death is on, and Fabian Risk must play to win. After all, there are many ways to die... This explosive thriller from Scandinavia's most inventive storyteller concludes the epic events of Motive X. Reviews for Stefan Ahnhem: 'Atmospheric and complicated... with great cop characters and some imaginatively grisly perps' Sunday Times (star pick) 'More gripping than Jo Nesbo, blacker than Stieg Larsson and more bleakly human than Henning Mankell' Tony Parsons 'Epic in scale and ambition' Daily Mail 'An intense journey, with an intricate plot... Ahnhem has mastered atmosphere, pacing and intrigue' Crime Review 'Masterly plotting, grisly murders and chilling suspense: Stefan Ahnhem keeps the threads of this complex, two-country narrative pulled tense' Better Reading

Book excerpt: How does a newly democratized nation constructively address the past to move from a divided history to a shared future? How do people rebuild coexistence after violence? The International IDEA Handbook on Reconciliation after Violent Conflict presents a range of tools that can be, and have been, employed in the design and implementation of reconciliation processes. Most of them draw on the experience of people grappling with the problems of past violence and injustice. There is no "right answer" to the challenge of reconciliation, and so the Handbook prescribes no single approach. Instead, it presents the options and methods, with their strengths and weaknesses evaluated, so that practitioners and policy-makers can adopt or adapt them, as best suits each specific context. Also available in a French language version.

Nobody knows for sure what keeps Darby's from collapsing into rubble, unless it's the building's fear of Lorenzo, World's Angriest Short-Order Cook. Through its doors pass Harry Kell, arch-intellect; ace pizza driver Kirby Dzerzhinsky and Melody, his biker-chick girlfriend; Beans Donovan, cemetery salesman extraordinaire; and Kathryn Vosjoli, who is what Scarlett O'Hara would have been like had she been raised by Mother Teresa. And this is not to mention (until now) the Vigilante, the Yellow Dumpster Rats, and the Giant, cockroach from Hell. From these ingredients, the author has created a world that's slightly west of wacky, hilarious, and ultimately touching, with a happy ending yet.

This book was released on 2014-11-25 with total page 900 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced therapies and technologies, new service delivery methods, and care upgrades in underserved areas are translating into improved quality of life for millions with disabilities. Occupational therapy parallels this progress at the individual level, balancing short-term recovery and adaptation with long-term independence and well-being. This Second Edition of the International Handbook of Occupational Therapy Interventions builds on its ground-breaking predecessor by modelling current clinical standards rooted in scientific evidence-based practice. Its interventions are applied to a diverse range of client disabilities, with many new or rewritten chapters on workplace and vehicle accommodations, smart home technologies, end-of-life planning, and other salient topics. New introductory chapters spotlight core competencies in the field, from assessing client needs and choosing appropriate interventions to evaluating programs and weighing priorities. And for increased educational value, interactive case studies allow readers an extra avenue for honing clinical reasoning and decision-making skills. Of particular note is a new chapter providing a taxonomy—the Occupational Therapy Intervention Framework—and a validation study of its categories and concepts, delineating the occupational therapist’s roles and the expected outcomes. Intervention areas featured in the Handbook include: ● Adaptive interventions, OTs manage and facilitate clients’ adaptations. ● Learning interventions, OTs teach and the clients learn or relearn. ● Enabling interventions, OTs enable clients to be meaningfully occupied. ● Preventing interventions, OTs prevent ill-health and promote clients’ ability to sustain health in daily life. The Second Edition of the International Handbook of Occupational Therapy Interventions is career-affirming reading for all members of rehabilitation teams, including occupational and physical therapists and rehabilitation nurses. Students intending to enter this growing field and professionals working toward its continued improvement will find it useful and inspiring.

Book excerpt: Are you suffering from self-sabotage, self-harm, low self-esteem, frustration and a lack of healthy boundaries? This book is about understanding that side of our minds that simply doesn't want to cooperate. The moment we understand how it works, we can turn it around and make it an ally instead of an enemy. That part of our mind is frequently underestimated because, while it has our best interests in mind (no pun intended), it operates in an outdated fashion, because it still thinks we live in the Stone Age. With this book, you will understand the real workings of that powerful mind of yours, and you will be able to easily change the beliefs that have been holding you back. You will not only learn a lot, you will love the anecdotes and laugh in the meantime.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of chronic mental illness has been much discussed, but there is still no widely accepted strategy of intervention for patients suffering from disorders of this kind. These patients have received little attention until recently, because they are difficult to treat effectively. Although methods of patient care are changing rapidly, the application of new techniques has been slow. Services for chronically disabled patients have been poorly funded. Government support has decreased while deinstitutionalization has increased the demand for community services. This volume focuses on emerging trends and developments in the field and offers comprehensive coverage of state-of-the-art methods of diagnosis, evalua tion, and treatment of the chronically mentally ill population. Many leading clinicians, scientists, and mental health advocates discuss new suggestions and solutions to longstanding problems, presenting biological and psychosocial perspectives. We introduce readers to current movements in the diagnosis and treatment of schizophrenia, depression, chronic alcoholism, mental retardation, and the mental illnesses related to aging. Recent trends in psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, and social management that may enable patients to live more satisfying and productive lives are particularly highlighted.

Plath wrote fiction throughout her life, in a wide variety of genres, including women's magazine romances, New Yorker stories, comedy, social criticism, autobiography, teenage fiction and science fiction. She wrote novels before and after The Bell Jar. Discussing all these novels and stories, and based on research in the three major archives of her work, this book is the complete study of Plath's fiction. The author analyses her influences as a fiction writer, the relationships between her poetry and fiction, the political views she expresses in her fiction, and devotes two chapters to the central concern of her novels and stories, the roles of women in contemporary society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PFAS (per and polyfluoroalkylsubstances) are known to be extremely difficult to degrade in the environment and to be bioaccumulative and toxic. Exposure to PFAS is suspected to increase the risk of adverse health effects, such as impacts on the thyroid gland, the liver, fat metabolism and the immune system. This study estimates the socioeconomic costs that may result from impacts on human health and the environment from the use of PFAS. Better awareness of the costs and problems associated with PFAS exposure will assist decision-makers and the general public to make more efficient and timely risk management decisions. Findings indicate that the costs are substantial, with annual health-related costs estimated to 2.8 – 4.6 billion EUR for the Nordic countries and 52 – 84 billion EUR for all EEA countries. Overall non-health costs are estimated at 46 million – 11 billion EUR for the Nordic countries.Upon request the excel spreadsheets used for the monetarisation and valuation in this report can also be provided along with a guidance on how to use the estimation of costs for value transfer. Please contact any of the consultants or members of the steering group from the Swedish Chemicals Agency or the Danish Environmental Protection Agency if you are interested in receiving these excel spreadsheets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book highlights the importance of visions of alternative futures in music teacher education in a time of increasing societal complexity due to increased diversity. There are policies at every level to counter prejudice, increase opportunities, reduce inequalities, stimulate change in educational systems, and prevent and counter polarization. Foregrounding the intimate connections between music, society and education, this book suggests ways that music teacher education might be an arena for the reflexive contestation of traditions, hierarchies, practices and structures. The visions for intercultural music teacher education offered in this book arise from a variety of practical projects, intercultural collaborations, and cross-national work conducted in music teacher education. The chapters open up new horizons for understanding the tension-fields and possible discomfort that music teacher educators face when becoming change agents. They highlight the importance of collaborations, resilience and perseverance when enacting visions on the program level of higher education institutions, and the need for change in re-imagining music teacher education programs.

Inner Explorations of a Seeker, contains personal reflections on spiritual growth and self-knowledge through the practice of meditation and mindfulness. Amar Ochani has delved deeply into what really causes unhappiness. In these collected essays, Ochani offers us insights into the human condition as fundamental jumping-off points to anyone hoping to improve their life. The path is clear, though never easy. To quote Ochani: "The truth hurts, but only once; untruth keeps hurting all the time." Ultimately, this is profoundly a book of hope and redemption. But we alone must do the difficult work of facing ourselves as we walk the path towards self-knowledge. How fortunate then to have such wisdom to help guide us on our journey."
