Book excerpt: "Please, God, not again." These were the first words that spewed from her mouth when JoAnn found herself at the deathbed of her 49-year-old husband. It was also a fitting sentiment one month later when her toilet broke for the second time since his funeral. Yes, widowhood is not for sissies. When her son drowned at her lake home eleven years earlier, JoAnn thought nothing could touch her so deeply. But after finding herself suddenly widowed at the age of 47, she is again challenged with another transformation and another era of looking for God in the evening clouds. I Am Widow, Hear Me Roar not only portrays a widow's grief journey with reflective prose and advice--like Deveny's inspirational memoir, When Bluebirds Fly--but also cleverly entertains with amusing dilemmas that a single mother and middle-aged woman often confront: Single-parenting, house repairs, facing the holidays, dating, making new friendships, and revisiting faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Your life isn't over." My dad says this. "I mean, YOUR life isn't over. Beyond the kids. You'll go on living, doing things. This isn't it." I know, I assure him. I have the kids. They need me. They're my life now. "OK," he replies, then grunts—more of a brief hum. He only hums when he thinks I'm full of shit. Shockingly single. Amy Biancolli's life went off script more dramatically than most after her husband of twenty years jumped off the roof of a parking garage. Left with three children, a three-story house, and a pile of knotty psychological complications, Amy realizes the flooding dishwasher, dead car battery, rapidly growing lawn, basement sump pump, and broken doorknob aren't going to fix themselves. She also realizes that "figuring shit out" means accepting the horrors that came her way, rolling with them, slogging through them, helping others through theirs, and working her way through life with love and laughter. Amy Biancolli is an author and journalist whose column appears in the Albany Times Union. Before that, Amy served as film critic for the Houston Chronicle where her reviews, published around the country, won her the 2007 Comment and Criticism Award from the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors Association. Biancolli is the author of House of Holy Fools: A Family Portrait in Six Cracked Parts, which earned her Albany Author of the Year. Amy lives in Albany, New York, with her three children.

But nothing prepared single mother Devan Anderson for her first heart-stopping glimpse of the man who’d changed her world forever one passion—filled night…only to vanish from her life. Mead didn’t want a hero’s welcome. He’d left home prepared to die for his country. Now a woman who seemed hauntingly familiar was tempting him to risk much more than his life. But he wasn’t the man he once was—the man Devan seemed to remember. The question was…was this a good thing?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where I Was: A Memoir About Forgetting and Remembering is a rich, entertaining and compelling account of the life of an extraordinary woman. In a land of many cultures, many races, many religions; in a state where politics and public policies impinge, sometimes callously, on the daily lives of its denizens, Constance Singam is an individual marginalised many times over by her status as a woman, an Indian, a widow and a civil society activist. Through humorous and moving accounts, Constance captures in words the images of the people, places and events that are the source of her most powerful memories. These images are connected to key turning points in her personal journey, set against or within the context of important historical events. In this reissue of her 2013 memoir, Constance reflects on current advocacy movements and on the events that led to the AWARE saga that would shape the rest of her life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A young man stumbles into a rural public house in western Ireland claiming to be on the run after having killed his father. He immediately becomes a source of awe and an object of adoration, and even love. But what happens when the inhabitants of this tiny village find out all is not as the stranger claims? J. M. Synge first presented The Playboy of the Western World at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin on the 26th of January, 1907. The performance immediately offended Irish nationalists by seemingly insulting the Irish people and language, and the general public, by being an offense against moral order. Before it was even finished, it was disrupted by a riot that soon spread out into the city. When it was performed in 1911 in the U.S., the play was again greeted with scorn and the company arrested for an immoral performance. But as Synge himself attempts to explain in the preface to his play, rather than attack Irish Gaelic, he wanted to show the relationship between the imagination of the Irish country people and their speech, which is “rich and living,” and that his use of such language reflects reality in a way missing from other modern drama. He later insisted that his plot was not to be taken as social realism, but died in 1909 before the play finally gained broader appeal in the wider world. Since then the significance of The Playboy of the Western World has been recognized and celebrated both for its characterizations and its rich use of dialect. Book excerpt: For Every Woman Who Wants More from Her Relationships Within every woman is the desire for extraordinary relationships. We crave intimacy and interconnectedness, companionship and camaraderie. Yet most of us eventually begin to wonder if we want too much. As heartbreak and disappointment take their toll, we become convinced that our desire for deep connection is our downfall. Not understanding that a woman's longings are her strength, we bury or ignore this God-given compass and lose our way. Yet the desire to connect persists. We make cookies for a new family in the neighborhood, send a note of encouragement to someone at church, plan date nights with our spouse, call a friend after a bad day at work to tell her every detail because we know she cares. And still we long for more. What is behind this yearning? Is it healthy? Is it normal? Does it have a purpose? Yes, says author and licensed professional counselor Sharon Hersh--and in Bravehearts, she'll teach how your deepest longings can lead you to rich relationships and give you the courage to love with abandon.

Book excerpt: While sitting poolside near her grandmother’s West Palm Beach condo, young millennial Vanessa overhears a strange conversation: “What, you want to have phone sex?” Accustomed to little more than old folks with their card games and early bird dinners, Vanessa is shocked—but intrigued—and soon makes the acquaintance of Michelle. As it turns out, Michelle is a widow trying online dating, while Vanessa is single and still recovering from tragic loss. Their morning meetings become a comforting daily occurrence. Separated by decades in age, the two women are extremely similar in many other ways and become fast friends. For Michelle, being single, no matter what age, is a roller coaster: one can accept the excitement and unpredictability or get off the ride. Michelle has learned to embrace the ride, and she encourages Vanessa to do the same, no matter past trauma. Michelle even gifts Vanessa with her memoir, Keep Walking, based on her life as a widow and her baby boomer dating experience. At home in New York, Vanessa will have decisions to make as she has a new job waiting and a possible relationship in the wings. Michelle’s insights and optimism change everything. Surviving life is a challenge, but to thrive, young Vanessa must find her authentic self, all with the help of a serendipitous friendship by a Florida pool. The Unexpected Connection is a provocative book filled with timely stories, insightful reflections, and humor that readers of all ages, gender, and personal status can relate to. As the tales are told, the reader becomes witness to the inner struggles and ultimate growth both Michelle and Vanessa experience. As with The Dance Partner we may love to dance but finding the right partner is a challenge. F.J. Strauss- Author, Life Coach, Professor

Book excerpt: The most famous and infamous play by Ireland's best loved (and hated) playwright The Playboy of the Western World, offended audiences when first produced in 1907, on account of its 'immodest' references to Irish womanhood and aroused a prolonged and bitter controversy, which lasted until the author's death in 1909. In the play Christy Mahon stumbles into the Flaherty's tavern claiming to have killed his father. He is praised for his boldness, and he and the barmaid Pegeen fall in love to the dismay of her betrothed, Shawn. The Widow Quin tries to seduce him to no avail, but eventually his father, who was only wounded, tracks Christy to the tavern, and Christy attacks him again. Old Mahon falls, and the townsfold, afraid of being implicated, bind Christy, but he is freed when his father crawls inside. Christy leaves to wander the world with a newfound confidence, and Pegeen laments betraying and losing him.

Book excerpt: "Arranged chronologically by decade, from the 1890s to the 1990s, each decade is divided into two different types of writing: critical/documentary and imaginative writing, and is accompanied by a headnote which situates it thematically and chronologically. The Reader is also structured for thematic study by listing all the pieces included under a series of topic headings. The wide range of material encompasses writings of well-known figures in the Irish canon and neglected writers alike. This will appeal to the general reader, but also makes Irish Writing in the Twentieth Century ideal as a core text, providing a unique focus for detailed study in a single volume."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: A true story. After being widowed at forty eight, Rose D'Alisio was forced to start a new life for herself and her family. She felt she was too young to be old and too old to be young, but she knew that part of her new life would probably include dating at some point. Rose wasn't too keen on the prospect of it the first time around, but surely dating hadn't changed that drastically since she was last in it twenty-five years ago, she thought. She thought wrong! It was a jungle out there! The days of romance, flirting, and serendipitous meetings were replaced with the fast-paced, instantaneous-gratification-seeking catalogue shopping for that perfect mate, also known as online dating. Rose was no more prepared for this new world than if she had been left alone in the middle of a dense jungle to fend for herself, battling the heat, the bugs, the carnivorous animals. How did she survive? Humor! That is how this book was born and came alive - Kissing the Frogs: A Widow's Safari Into the Online Dating Jungle.
