Truman and Judge J. Waites Waring, who presided over Woodard's case. In an attempt to right the wrongs of Woodard's injustice and systemic racism, Truman formed the Council for Civil Rights which ultimately led to the dismantling of Jim Crow laws beginning with the desegregation of the Armed Forces and the Railroad car. The Civil Rights Movement quickly gained momentum and later the case Brown v. Board of Education challenged school segregation. Entertainers Nat King Cole, Pearl Bailey, Cab Calloway and Boxer Joe Louis are also a part of this amazing story. Sgt. MacGregor, Jr.'s Integration of the Armed Forces 1940-1965 (Washington, D.C.: U.S. Army Center of Military History, 1981) that documents the Armed Forces efforts as part of the Defense Studies Series. The volume is an excellent history of a social topic often difficult for Service historical offices to deal with.
