Book excerpt: A NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • “A must-read...Phoebe Robinson discusses race and feminism in such a funny, real, and specific way, it penetrates your brain and stays with you.”—Ilana Glazer, co-creator and co-star of Broad City A hilarious and timely essay collection about race, gender, and pop culture from comedy superstar and 2 Dope Queens podcaster Phoebe Robinson Being a black woman in America means contending with old prejudices and fresh absurdities every day. Comedian Phoebe Robinson has experienced her fair share over the years: she's been unceremoniously relegated to the role of “the black friend,” as if she is somehow the authority on all things racial; she's been questioned about her love of U2 and Billy Joel (“isn’t that...white people music?”); she's been called “uppity” for having an opinion in the workplace; she's been followed around stores by security guards; and yes, people do ask her whether they can touch her hair all. the. time. Now, she's ready to take these topics to the page—and she’s going to make you laugh as she’s doing it. Using her trademark wit alongside pop-culture references galore, Robinson explores everything from why Lisa Bonet is “Queen. Bae. Jesus,” to breaking down the terrible nature of casting calls, to giving her less-than-traditional advice to the future female president, and demanding that the NFL clean up its act, all told in the same conversational voice that launched her podcast, 2 Dope Queens, to the top spot on iTunes. As personal as it is political, You Can't Touch My Hair examines our cultural climate and skewers our biases with humor and heart, announcing Robinson as a writer on the rise. One of Glamour's “Top 10 Books of 2016”
Book Synopsis I Am Not My Circumstance by : Kendall T. Johnson

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I Am Not My Circumstance came about when I finally had an awakening and began to tap into why God created me. Your circumstances, rather derived from, child molestation, domestic abuse, drug abuse, growing up with both parents being absent in the home, adoption, or even being bullied. I could go on and on. However, I call all of these, “circumstances, or SO WHATS!” This book will advise you on how to deal with YOU and the illusion that your circumstances create in which are all designed to keep you living in fear. In Matthew 7:7-8 of the Holy Bible, it states, “Ask and it shall be given t you, seek and you shall find, knock and the door shall be opened unto you.” Growing up, no one taught me how to deal with “me.” In this book, I will reveal to you how I learned to deal with my “inner me.” If God can choose a little black nappy headed girl who grew up in a dysfunctional, broken, single parent home in the projects on the North side of Hope, Arkansas to tell you everything is possible, the possibilities are endless! Don't let situation and circumstance that are designed to keep you enslaved have control of your life. Claim God's promise! The bible says that life is designed for each and every living human to live a life full of abundance. It's our inheritance!
Book Synopsis Race, Religion, and Resilience in the Neoliberal Age by : Cedric C. Johnson
Download or read book Race, Religion, and Resilience in the Neoliberal Age written by Cedric C. Johnson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a study of the rise of American neoliberalism in the aftermath of the modern Civil Rights movement, paying particular attention to the traumatic impact of the neoliberal age on countless African Americans. Author Cedric C. Johnson takes a close look at the manner in which American neoliberalism has been able to preserve, articulate, and exploit constructions of race-based difference. The neoliberal age has engendered an extraordinary growth in economic disparities and social inequalities, with traumatic repercussions for innumerable African Americans. Historically, black religious forms have functioned as contested spaces, capable of organizing alternative modes of cultural, economic, and political life. This project examines forms of black religiosity that function as modes of soul care in this context. Johnson posits an innovative, multi-systems approach that informs practices of care for populations traumatized or threatened by the neoliberal age.

Book Synopsis Raw Sugar by : Ashley Anderson Stern
Download or read book Raw Sugar written by Ashley Anderson Stern and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2020-10-22 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was depressed. I felt alone. I felt conflicted, lost. I didn’t really know what else to do. So, I decided to write. Be honest with myself. Be honest with other people. Comfort myself. Confront myself. Face the realist in me and quiet down the idealist. Think from my mind but write from my heart. Take responsibility. Take ownership. Explore the parts of myself I wanted to keep hidden away and not open. Dig deep. Speak my own truth. Open up about the things I cried about, prayed about; what broke me and strengthened me; my fears and my hopes. I wanted to express myself. Be genuine. I read an article once about this woman who visited a slave plantation. The main source of income for the slave masters who owned the land was sugar cane. The woman went on to explain how difficult the process was to actually produce sugar cane during that period of time. This idea intrigued me...the idea that something so sweet came from something so painful, something so hard to process. Part of what makes my ancestry, my people, me, women so beautiful, sweet, is the pain, the hardship, the “difficult processes” that we persevered through. Raw Sugar; The end product is sweet, but the journey to get there is tumultuous.
Book Synopsis Chloe and Her People by : Mitzi J. Smith
Download or read book Chloe and Her People written by Mitzi J. Smith and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chloe and Her People offers an Africana Womanist reading of First Corinthians that privileges the knowledge, experiences, histories, traditions, voices, and artifacts of Black women and the Black community that challenge or dissent from Paul's rhetorical epistemic constructions. Smith reads First Corinthians dialogically from the perspective of oppressed and marginalized readers situated in front of the text and those muted within and behind the letter. Struggling toward unmitigated freedom, Chloe and Her People talks back to and throws shade on, sometimes poetically, Paul's muting and subordination of women, rhetorically constructed binary knowledge, the glass ceiling placed on women's heads, heterosexual marriage as a mechanism for managing lust, and androcentric patriarchal love built on women's passive bodies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural . The Beautiful 'N' Word Breaking the Psychological Bondage of the American Standard of Beauty The American standard of beauty is an optical illusion that has mesmerized the world. Artificial hair, and makeup in the hands of a beautician is equivalent to a deck of cards, a top hat and a magic wand in the hands of a magician. The multibillion-dollar beauty industry has successfully proven that the hand is quicker than the eye. Hypnotically, the public applauds the deception. Most women-even some little girls-are addictive users of the hair and cosmetic charade; yet, few know its history. Most women were convinced in childhood by subliminal messages in the media that their natural hair and facial features were substandard. Ultimately, acquiring the acceptance and applause from a well-trained public became a subconscious ritual. No civilized race or nationality is exempt. This book exposes secrets and facts about the American standard of beauty rarely revealed, such as: The untold truth about artificial hair Why natural beauty is heavily discouraged The cosmetic conspiracy A totally natural method of growing nappy hair What are Sisterlocks and who is its creator
