Book excerpt: Caught between two worlds—a poverty-stricken village and a fancy big-city school—a young Sri Lankan girl must decide who she really is and where she really belongs. 1998, Colombo. The Sri Lankan Civil War is raging, but everyday life must go on. At Kavi’s school, her friends talk about the weekly Top 40, the Backstreet Boys, Shahrukh Khan, Leo & Kate… and who died—or didn’t—in the latest bombing. But Kavi is afraid of something even scarier than war. She fears that if her friends discover her secret—that she is not who she is pretending to be—they’ll stop talking to her. I want to be friends with these / happy, / fearless, / girls / who look like they / belong. So I could also be / happy, / fearless, / and maybe even / belong. Kavi’s scholarship to her elite new school was supposed to be everything she ever wanted, but as she tries to find some semblance of normalcy in a country on fire, nothing is going according to plan. In an effort to fit in with her wealthy, glittering, and self-assured new classmates, Kavi begins telling lies, trading her old life—where she’s a poor girl whose mother has chosen a new husband over her daughter—for a new one, where she’s rich, loved, and wanted. But how long can you pretend to be someone else? This dazzling novel-in-verse comes from an astonishing new talent who lived through the civil war herself. Perfect for fans of Jamine Warga, Supriya Kelkar, and Rajani LaRocca, I Am Kavi centers a powerful South Asian voice, and stars an unforgettable heroine each and every one of us can relate to. In Bhagvat Gita, Song of God, author Dr. Roopnarine Singh MD FRCPC, building on many years of devotion and study, presents a modern-English interpretation of the divine book. Singh sets this adaptation in verse to reveal its unique message: that God in the person of Lord Krishna wishes humanity to become perfect as God is perfect and that the whole Gita beckons us to this practical goal of life. Perfection in discipline, work, duty, knowledge, wisdom, faith, and devotion to the One God supreme serves as the formula for peace, happiness, prosperity, nobility, and greatness. Through the practice of this philosophy, humanity may be transformed and trigger the start of a new golden age. Offering a rendition of the Bhagvat Gita set in modern English and in verse, this study seeks to illuminate the divine book and inspire knowledge of the formula for peace and happiness.

Book excerpt: Krete walked through the gates of Deerfield Correctional Facility a free man, after spending four years in prison equipped with a master plan. Within six months of his release he was gainfully employed and financially stable. He poured concrete by day and chased his passion for music at night with the goal of owning his own entertainment company. Unfortunately, for Krete bad habits die slowly—especially if the price was right. Greed gives way to reason without regards to the impact it would have on the lives of the people in his tightknit circle. Amidst the growing chaos, Krete finds himself blessed and cursed by the love of two women, which could later prove dangerous for all involved. Many lies were told in an effort to balance the demands of multiple relationships as both worlds begin to collide. They both played pivotal roles in his life—one has his heart and the other one has his back. In addition, an unexpected windfall opens up a drug pipeline stretching from Georgia to VA, which attracts deadly consequences and the life he once envisioned evolves into a dream deferred.

Book excerpt: Traditional Indian pāṇḍitya (scholarship) has a long and distinguished history but is now practically extinct. Its decline is remarkably recent—traditional pāṇḍitya flourished as recently as 150 years ago. The decline is also paradoxical, having occurred precipitously following a broad and remarkable flowering of the tradition between the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries. The important questions this decline poses are the subject of much ongoing work. The intellectual history of the period is still under construction, and the present book represents a major contribution to the project. A notable impediment has been the lack of critical biographies of significant thinkers in this tradition. The importance of personal and social context for reconstructing intellectual histories is widely understood. In the classical Indian intellectual tradition, however, authors systematically exclude such context, making intellectual biography something of a rarity—very rare in English and sparse even in the regional languages. This book contains translations from the original Kannaḍa of the biographies of Garaḷapurī Śāstri, Śrīkaṇṭha Śāstri, and Kuṇigala Rāmaśāstri of nineteenth-century Mysore, all representing the highest echelons of traditional pāṇḍitya at this critical period of transition. Their fields are literature, grammar, and logic, respectively. The biographies focus on the personal lives of these scholars and their many contexts. These biographies are almost contemporaneous accounts, reflecting firsthand knowledge. The translations are accompanied by copious footnotes as well as appendices drawn from the relevant primary sources.

Barger’s sci-fi trilogy, Maxine and the Commanders Qatar have been sent to the settlement moon, Megiddo, to infiltrate and contain a subversive group of Guardians who have taken several hundred human refugees hostage to use as coercion for advancing their own radical political agenda. Maxine, the Qatars, a mercenary, a band of civilian insurgents, and elements of the US military soon find themselves engaged in conflict against a radicalized group of Guardians. The subversives are led by a witch named Kensa, who is revered as the leader of an ancient occult society known as the Sisters of the Stone. Kensa and her mind-controlled Guardians must be overthrown if the humans they terrorize are to be freed from captivity. Inevitably, war breaks out that pits Guardian against Guardian and humans against Guardians, and threatens to unleash a civil war on the Sirius home world. “From start to finish, Megiddo is full of action, surprises, and emotional twists and turns. This stellar adventure brings us to a whole new world with an entertaining cast of characters old and new. As a newly married couple, Max and Kavi are deeply committed not only to each other, but to saving humanity and aliens alike. Their mission is aided by the help of familiar family and friends and new allies, including the kick-ass Blonde Squad. Together they battle the evil forces threatening the goodness of the universe and beyond. Author B. L. Barger immerses the reader into an alien world and, although the fictional Megiddo is millions of miles from Earth, the emotion, desires and heart-pumping adrenaline created by Barger in this environment are familiar and totally relate-able. I didn’t want to put this exciting page-turner down!” - Anne Holm Brown, Original Blonde Squad
