Don spent the first 14 years of his life in and out of hospitals undergoing surgeries the medical profession thought "might" correct his deformities. Bonnie progressed through the public school system with her own set of challenges since public education for the disabled was not a common occurrence during the 50s and 60s. Don and Bonnie both went on to college. A mutual friend insisted they meet each other and two years later they were married. Don worked as a tax examiner for I.R.S. for 30 years and Bonnie started a secretarial service to help with the family income. They raised two fine boys and now enjoy the blessings of 9 grandchildren. Even though cerebral palsy is not a progressive condition, Don's physical condition deteriorate over the last 15-20 years of his life till by the time he passed away (December 2011) he was unable to do anything for himself; he was fed through a feeding tube, was on oxygen 24 hours a day and had a tracheotomy for suctioning. Bonnie did most all of Don's care up until about a year before his death when the 24/7 schedule became more than any one person could do. But together they climbed and conquered every mountain.

It isn't, however, simply a random mix of popular articles. It's a comprehensive work that encompasses every principle, theme, and methodology of the SCM approach. The book is laid out across six major areas of classroom management and includes the most pressing issues, problems, and concerns shared by all teachers. The underlying SCM themes of accountability, maturity, independence, personal responsibility, and intrinsic motivation are all there and weave their way throughout the entirety of the book. Together, they form a simple, unique, and sometimes contrarian approach to classroom management that anyone can do. Whether you're an elementary, middle, or high school teacher, The Smart Classroom Management Way will give you the strategies, skills, and know-how to turn any group of students into the motivated, well-behaved class you love teaching.

This book is Laurie's testimony and it demonstrates how she clearly saw God's hand through some very painful times. Seeing adversity from God's perspective, in what Laurie calls the "adversity effect," challenges us to allow it to be a conduit for growth.

Book excerpt: Rooted and Radiant: Women’s Narratives of Leadership shares the narratives of 39 women navigating the process of leadership. It seeks to honor the unique experiences of the narrative authors while also challenging the dominant stories of the leadership process. The audience for the book is leadership educators and women looking to further explore leadership as a phenomenon. Rooted and Radiant: Women’s Narratives of Leadership is grounded in the hope and radiance described by Skye, one of the many voices in this collection, where she described how “leadership radiated all around me.” The book is filled with narratives from women exploring their own stories of leadership and gender. These stories are woven together by an author team committed to centering the voices and lived experiences of these narrative authors. This book begins with important literature framing women and leadership. The early chapters also explore the research process of this book in-depth. The core of the book includes chapters focused on critical themes found in the 39 narratives and weaving together women’s narratives of understanding and enacting leadership. The book concludes with critical hope about women and leadership moving forward.

Book excerpt: We Survived - A True Story of Control and Mental and Physical Abuse immediately came to mind as a title for my book. I intended to draw attention to a problem that has been ignored or hidden for many years. Thankfully, people are more willing to discuss this issue today. I am constantly amazed at the number of people I speak with who admit to being abused in one way or another. When you grow up in a family that does not abuse, you are unaware of the many signals and are ashamed to say it happened to you. In writing this book, I hope to illustrate how manipulation works in your relationship without you realizing it. Most people are afraid to take steps to help themselves because they are too scared. This book covers the manners of manipulation, what to look for, what to avoid, and how to get help while you and your loved ones remain safe. It also lets you know that living in an uncontrolled atmosphere is possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The immigration of Muslims to Europe and the integration of later generations presents many challenges to European societies. Unwanted builds on five years of ethnographic research with a group of fifty-five second-generation Muslim immigrant drug dealers in Frankfurt, Germany to examine the relationship between immigration, social exclusion, and the informal economy. Having spent countless hours with these young men, hanging out in the streets, in cafes or bars and at the local community center, Sandra Bucerius explores the intimate aspects of one of the most discriminated and excluded populations in Germany. Bucerius looks at how the young men negotiate their participation in the drug market while still trying to adhere to their cultural and religious obligations and how they struggle to find a place within German society. The young men considered their involvement in the drug trade a response to their exclusion at the same time that it provides a means of forging an identity and a place within German society. The insights into the lives, hopes, and dreams of these young men, who serve as an example for many Muslim and otherwise marginalized immigrant youth groups in Western countries, provides the context necessary to understand their actions while never obscuring the many contradictory facets of their lives.
