Book excerpt: As the Black Death rampages across Europe, two creatures of the Elder World clash over the rotting corpse of Christendom in Scott Oden's third book in the Grimnir Series Skrælingr. Orcnéas. Fomoraig. He is Grimnir . . . For over a century, he has tracked the dragon, Níðhöggr -- the Malice-Striker -- from the shores of Lake Vänern, across the Baltic Sea, through Russia, and down into the Mediterranean; he has hounded the wyrm from Old Muscovy to Messina. And finally, to the Eternal City -- to Rome, itself. And in Rome, on a cold November night in 1347 AD, on the ruined steps of Old St. Peter’s basilica, Grimnir’s saga comes crashing to an end. A crossbow bolt, loosed in terror, slays him out of hand. It is a mundane finale to a life spent hip-deep in bloodshed and slaughter, surrounded by steel and savagery and the sorcery of the Elder World. But Death is just the beginning . . . Now, on the grim and misty isle of Nástrond, under the shadows of Yggðrasil, Grimnir is plunged headlong into the twisted Valhalla that is the afterlife of his people. Here, bloody in-fighting, schemes and betrayals are the order of the day. Grimnir is forced to contend with a cabal of witches, with giants and trolls who have never felt the light of Miðgarðr’s moon, and with his own rapacious kin as he journeys beyond the shores of Nástrond to find answers. And with every death, Grimnir unravels another thread of a monstrous secret woven at the dawn of time -- one that will turn him from the pawn of unknown gods into the most powerful being in the Nine Worlds. And the most hunted. For he, alone, holds the key to Ragnarök and the Doom of Odin . . .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An immensely popular genre, crime fiction has only in recent years been engaged significantly by African American authors. Historically, the racist stereotypes often central to crime fiction and the socially conservative nature of the genre presented problems for writing the black experience, and the tropes of justice and restoration of social order have not resonated with authors who saw social justice as a work in progress. Some African American authors did take up the challenge. Pauline Hopkins, Rudolph Fisher and Chester Himes led the way in the first half of the 20th century, followed by Ishmael Reed's "anti-detective" novels in the 1970s. Since the 1990s, Walter Mosley, Colson Whitehead and Stephen L. Carter have written detective fiction focusing on questions of constitutional law, civil rights, biological and medical issues, education, popular culture, the criminal justice system and matters of social justice. From Hopkins's Hagar's Daughter (published in 1901), to Hime's hardboiled "Harlem Detective" series, to Carter's patrician world of the black bourgeoisie, these authors provide a means of examining literary and social constructions of the African-American experience. Book excerpt: Its the Mountain Way is a coming-of-age story filled with suspense and memories of first love. Savannah Benjamin, born and raised in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, knew the ways of the mountain. She had only experienced the outside world from the books she read. But books couldnt teach her how first love felt, or explain why some people who seemed good were not always trustworthy. They didnt tell her that teenagers could be mean or unfriendly. These lessons she had to learn for herself. Set in 1983, marrying young was not unusual in the isolated hollows and villages of the mountains. At fourteen, Savannah was no longer a child, but not yet an adult. Her mother had married at fifteen, she wanted more for her daughter. Horace Jenks, the local moonshiner, had other plans for Savannah.

And Jake's "delicate lady" had a mind of her own—with ideas that included introducing Jake to a life of love and faith, no matter how hard he tried to keep his distance. But when danger began stalking her again, Jake realized the only safe place for Lacey was by his side.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I began writing The Days of Darkness in 1972. Where the story came from I don’t recall, only that I envisioned a man running for his life. Perhaps there is some connection to the writings of William Faulkner whose works I was studying at the time. At any rate I wrote only a few thousand words before laying the manuscript aside. Over the next few years I added to it, but I think I didn’t have a clear notion of where the story was going or what was to happen. Only after three decades had elapsed did I return to the writing. As I re-read it, I began to formulate a notion of what to do with it and to explore where it might be directed. Gradually I resumed writing and added characters, discovering where it was leading and following some unstated inclination or impetus. Soon it began to take shape, forcing me to deal with the larger issues of North versus South, black versus white, justice versus injustice, and man versus woman. I suppose The Days of Darkness is in some arcane way allegorical. But it isn’t possible for me to explain that or even to explore it; to me it’s just a story I wrote in which I try to say something meaningful. I think that is what all stories try to do.
