Alpheus How to Hypnotize: Being an Exhaustive and Practical System of Method, Application, and Use We have scoured the globe for the best and most interesting volumes and books from the golden age of publishing. Then reproduced them as if they were written today. Building into a collection of books about the mind, psychology, the occult, mysticism, hypnosis, magic and much more. We have reproduced them because there is a certain tactile pleasure to holding a book in your hands. To owning it and seeing it on your bookshelf. Plus, we endeavour to keep the quality high and the cost low. Very rarely you may come across a mistake in a book, wherever possible we have corrected as many errors as we can find, although sometimes due to the period in which the book was actually written and not wishing to alter the original integrity or meaning of the authors work... we left it as is. We are Adding new titles all the time so keep up to date by visiting busted husky or checking us out on amazon and other great book sites. There is no question that hypnosis is an archaic topic, despite the fact that the term was not used until 1850. It contained the "mysteries of Isis" in Egypt thousands of years ago, and it was most likely one of the weapons, if not the primary weapon, of the magi mentioned in the Bible and the "wise men" of Babylon and Egypt. "Laying on of hands" must have been a sort of mesmerism, and Greek oracles of Delphi and other locations appear to have been delivered by priests or priestesses who entered into self-induced hypnotic trances. It is thought that the fakirs of India who can grow trees from dry twigs in a matter of minutes or turn a rod into a snake (like Aaron did in Bible history) use hypnosis. The inhabitants of the East are considerably more susceptible to the impacts of the West. "Hypnotism is an established scientific fact; but the claim that the hypnotist has any mysterious psychic power is the invariable mark of the charlatan." This book, written in 1903, barely sixty years after the term "hypnotism" was invented, covers the modern knowledge of the technique's nature, applications, and hazards. Hypnotism has been performed for many years, but it was not until the mid-to-late nineteenth century that it became a particularly popular approach to investigate the human mind. Although our understanding of the issue has advanced significantly over the years, this book remains an interesting look at a procedure that was once regarded to be at the cutting edge of medical research..

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The promise of magic has always commanded the human imagination, but the story of industrial modernity is usually seen as a process of disenchantment. Drawing on the writings and performances of the so-called 'Golden Age Magicians' from the turn of the twentieth century, Chris Goto-Jones unveils the ways in which European and North American encounters with (and representations of) Asia - the fabled Mystic East - worked to re-enchant experiences of the modern world. Beginning with a reconceptualization of the meaning of 'modern magic' itself - moving beyond conventional categories of 'real' and 'fake' magic - Goto-Jones' acclaimed book guides us on a magical mystery tour around India, China, and Japan, showing us levitations and decapitations, magic duels and bullet catches, goldfish bowls and paper butterflies. In the end, this mesmerizing book reveals Orientalism as a kind of magic in itself, casting a spell over Western culture that leaves it transformed, even today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part non-fiction, part short fiction; part memoir, part essay, Trance-migrations is both an entertaining and informative read and a thoroughly original and creative experiment in metafiction. Combining great erudition with sophisticated word play and bawdy humor, it alternates sections containing stories-- both fictional and non-fictional--to be read by the reader to her or himself with sections of stories to be read aloud to a listener. In the latter cases Siegel intends that the listener actually go into a hypnotic trance out of which the reader will eventually awaken her or him. In this way the narrative form of the book "performs” a hypnotic "induction script” out of which the listener awakens to find that it is impossible to tell what "really” happened, just as in hypnosis the line between fact and fiction is irremediably blurred. Siegel uses hypnosis and the dynamic between hypnotist and hypnosand as a way of exploring other power dynamics -- between lovers, between writer and reader (or listener), between masculine colonial culture and the "feminized” East, between God (or gods) and mortals, and ultimately between memory - historical and personal - and constantly shifting meaning. The book is above all about reading as a hypnotic experience. Through stories based on motifs and characters from both Indian mythology and from real life (notably Abbé Faria, a Goan Catholic monk who gained notoriety in the early nineteenth century with demonstrations of magnetism in Paris, and James Esdaile, a Scottish surgeon for the East India Company who experimented with mesmerism as a surgical anesthetic in Calcutta), Siegel epitomizes and elucidates the psychological and political dynamics of a fascination with a mysterious Orient, and reveals the anxieties embedded in such fascination.

Book excerpt: Finding True Magic is the primary training text for the Transpersonal Hypnotherapy/NLP Certification Program offered by the Institute for Therapeutic Learning. Finding True Magic and the Transpersonal Hypnotherapy/NLP trainings are appropriate for laypeople seeking personal growth, as well as for therapists and other professionals intent on advancing their therapeutic skills. In fact, about 50 per cent of ITL students take the training primarily for personal development. This book explores the possibilities for recognizing and freeing ourselves from a destructive process of perceiving, thinking, and acting that can be viewed as a pernicious worldwide syndrome. Unlike other ailments, which we strive to isolate and cure, this insidious fever has a characteristic that makes us blind to its presence: we come to identify its symptoms as our own true self. We lovingly speak of this disease as our ego, our sense of limited separate selfhood. Jack Elias calls it "egoic-minding," because it is a process, not a thing. Egoic-minding is a fragmented, biased way of perceiving and thinking. It can be viewed as a sort of destructive hypnotic trance that causes us to experience each other as strangers, as different, as threats. The delirium of this trance causes us to do violence to each other and to our world, without ever recognizing that it (our egoic thought process) is the true enemy. By synthesizing insights and techniques of Eastern and Western philosophy and psychology, Finding True Magic explores various ways to disperse the feverish trance of egoic-minding, heal the trauma it causes, and wake us up to the sacred magic of our true Self. This true inner Self is the wellspring of our capacity for cooperation, community-building, and the celebration of life. Everyone has the right to the make use of the essential insights of healing communication, without resorting to the long-term expense of a professional intermediary. Therapy should change, simply because there is a more effective approach to healing and personal growth. That approach, the subject of this book, relies on each person's inherent goodness, a resource that is surprisingly easy to contact in the space between egoic thoughts.

Book excerpt: Hysteria is probably the condition which best illustrates the tight connection between neurology and psychiatry. While it has been known since antiquity, its renewed studies during the 19th century were mainly due to the work of Jean-Martin Charcot and his school in Paris. This publication focuses on these early developments, in which immediate followers of Charcot, including Babinski, Freud, Janet, Richer, and Gilles de la Tourette were involved. Hysteria is commonly considered as a condition that often leads to spectacular manifestations (e.g. convulsions, palsies), although both structural and functional imaging data confirm the absence of consistent and reproducible structural lesions. While numerous hypotheses have tried to explain the occurrence of this striking phenomenon, the precise nosology and pathophysiology of hysteria remain elusive. This volume offers an enthralling and informative read for neurologists, psychiatrists, and psychologists, as well as for general physicians, historians, and everyone interested in the developments of one of the most intriguing conditions in medicine.

Book excerpt: Fear, anger, anxiety, negativity, rudeness, information overload — the stressors of modern life can make just getting through the day a daunting task. Since 1985, John Maxwell Taylor has been moving through the collective madness with joy, spirit, and strength. The Power of I Am invites the reader to join him on this journey. Combining principles from martial arts, mindfulness, body-centered awareness, and spiritual and scientific principles, this engaging mix of practical tools, stories, and life lessons teaches personal empowerment through gaining inner strength in social situations and dealing effectively with negative people. The author uses real-world experiences to show readers how to stop being drained by “energy vampires,” how to defuse conflict by boosting energy levels when trouble comes, how to eliminate stage fright and other social anxieties, how to increase personal magnetism and sense of self, and how to tap the existing, but often dormant, power of the mind for personal transformation.

Book excerpt: Born and raised in India, Caryl Matrisciana was surrounded by a strange and mystical religion, seeing firsthand the effects Hinduism had on the people of that nation. After leaving India as a young adult, she became involved in the counter-culture hippie movement, only to find that the elements of Hinduism and the New Age were very much the same. Eventually, Caryl would discover that this same spirituality had entered not only the Western world, but the Christian church as well, unbeknownst to most people. Out of India succinctly identifies the mystical religious roots behind Yoga, which is being practiced today by millions of people, many of whom are Christians. Book jacket.
