Book excerpt: Domestic and irrigation well water quality in south-central Kansas is threatened by multiple sources of contamination including CO2-EOR activities, evaporite dissolution and oilfield brine release. This research identifies potential groundwater flow paths for contaminant migration in a concentrated area mixed with oil, injection, irrigation and domestic wells. Groundwater (GW) sampling took place before and after CO2 injections into the Mississippian in to assess temporal changes in water quality in a ~2 mile radius around injection well KGS 2-32. Samples were analyzed for stable isotopes, rare earth elements (REE), major and trace ions, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) with a select few analyzed for dissolved CO2 and hydrocarbons. Results of major ion chemistry reveal an evaporite control on geochemistry in wells screened within the paleoterrace as opposed to the incised valley. Bedrock channeling due to erosional scouring of the paleovalley is speculated to have led to secondary porosity thereby increasing GW flow. Similar stable isotopic and Br/Cl mass ratios between SW-3, Shepherd and Zehr indicate water is similarly sourced; lower total dissolved solids within incised valley could result from dilution from infiltration through overburden sediments. Br/Cl, SO4/Cl, Na/Cl and (Ca+Mg)/Na ratios indicate Shepherd, Zehr and SW-3 are possibly impacted by a recent salt plume movement through this portion of the shallow aquifer. An increase in total dissolved solids and Mg/Ca ratios with temperatures less than 25°C over a 25 to 200 ft. depth interval into the Permian Shale of the uplands could have resulted from increasing calcitization and reduction in effective porosity. Dissolved REEs showed most domestic and surface waters contain similar signatures, indicating similarly sourced water. Additionally, there was no CO2 leakage found within the sampling timeframe and a future leaked plume may be impeded by decreasing porosity from current secondary mineralization processes taking place in the Permian Shale.

Book excerpt: With the ever-rising atmospheric concentrations of CO2 there arises a need to either reduce emissions or develop technology to store or utilize the gas. Geologic carbon storage is a potential solution to this global problem. This work is a part of the U.S. Department of Energy small-scale pilot studies investigating different areas for carbon storage within North America, with Kansas being one of them. This project is investigating the feasibility for CO2 storage within the hyper-saline Arbuckle aquifer in Kansas. The study incorporates the investigation of three wells that have been drilled to basement; one well used as a western calibration study (Cutter), and the other two as injection and monitoring wells (Wellington 1-28 and 1-32). Future injection will occur at the Wellington field within the Arbuckle aquifer at a depth of 4,900-5,050 ft. This current research transects the need to understand the lateral connectivity of the aquifers, with Cutter being the focus of this study. Three zones are of interest: the Mississippian pay zone, a potential baffle zone, and the Arbuckle injection zone. Cored rock analyses and analyzed formation water chemistry determined that at Wellington there exists a zone that separated the vertical hydrologic flow units within the Arbuckle. This potential low porosity baffle zone within the Arbuckle could help impede the vertical migration of the buoyant CO2 gas after injection. Geochemical analysis from formation water within Cutter indicates no vertical separation of the hydrologic units and instead shows a well-mixed zone. The lateral distance between Cutter and Wellington is approximately 217 miles. A well-mixed zone would allow the CO2 plume to migrate vertically and potentially into potable water sources. Formation brine from Cutter was co-injected with supercritical CO2 into a cored rock from within the Arbuckle (7,098 ft.). Results show that the injected CO2 preferentially preferred a flow pathway between the chert nodules and dolomite. Post reaction formation chemistry of the brine showed the greatest reactivity occurring with redox sensitive species. Reactivity of these species could indicate that they will only be reactive on the CO2 plumes front, and show little to no reactivity within the plume.

Book excerpt: Hydrological and geochemical monitoring are key components of site characterization and CO2 plume monitoring for a pilot test to inject CO2 into a brine-bearing sand of the fluvial-deltaic Frio formation in the upper Texas Gulf Coast. In situ, injected CO2 forms a supercritical phase that has gas-like properties (low density and viscosity) compared to the surrounding brine, while some CO2 dissolves in the brine. The pilot test employs one injection well and one monitor well, with continuous pressure and flow-rate monitoring in both wells, and continuous surface fluid sampling and periodic down-hole fluid sampling from the monitor well. Pre-injection site-characterization includes pump tests with pressure-transient analysis to estimate single-phase flow properties, establish hydraulic connectivity between the wells, determine appropriate boundary conditions, and analyze ambient phase conditions within the formation. Additionally, a pre-injection tracer test furnishes estimates of kinematic porosity and the geometry of flow paths between injection and monitor wells under single-phase conditions. Pre-injection geochemical sampling provides a baseline for subsequent geochemical monitoring and helps determine the optimal tracers to accompany CO2 injection. During CO2 injection, hydrological monitoring enables estimation of two-phase flow properties and helps track the movement of the injected CO2 plume, while geochemical sampling provides direct evidence of the arrival of CO2 and tracers at the monitor well. Furthermore, CO2-charged water acts as a weak acid, and reacts to some extent with the minerals in the aquifer, producing a distinct chemical signature in the water collected at the monitor well. Comparison of breakthrough curves for the single-phase tracer test and the CO2 (and its accompanying tracers) illuminates two-phase flow processes between the supercritical CO2 and native brine, an area of current uncertainty that must be better understood to effectively sequester CO2 in saline aquifers.

Book excerpt: To demonstrate the potential for geologic storage of CO2 in saline aquifers, the Frio-I Brine Pilot was conducted, during which 1600 tons of CO2 were injected into a high-permeability sandstone and the resulting subsurface plume of CO2 was monitored using a variety of hydrogeological, geophysical, and geochemical techniques. Fluid samples were obtained before CO2 injection for baseline geochemical characterization, during the CO2 injection to track its breakthrough at a nearby observation well, and after injection to investigate changes in fluid composition and potential leakage into an overlying zone. Following CO2 breakthrough at the observation well, brine samples showed sharp drops in pH, pronounced increases in HCO3− and aqueous Fe, and significant shifts in the isotopic compositions of H2O and dissolved inorganic carbon. Based on a calibrated 1-D radial flow model, reactive transport modeling was performed for the Frio-I Brine Pilot. A simple kinetic model of Fe release from the solid to aqueous phase was developed, which can reproduce the observed increases in aqueous Fe concentration. Brine samples collected after half a year had lower Fe concentrations due to carbonate precipitation, and this trend can be also captured by our modeling. The paper provides a method for estimating potential mobile Fe inventory, and its bounding concentration in the storage formation from limited observation data. Long-term simulations show that the CO2 plume gradually spreads outward due to capillary forces, and the gas saturation gradually decreases due to its dissolution and precipitation of carbonates. The gas phase is predicted to disappear after 500 years. Elevated aqueous CO2 concentrations remain for a longer time, but eventually decrease due to carbonate precipitation. For the Frio-I Brine Pilot, all injected CO2 could ultimately be sequestered as carbonate minerals.

Book excerpt: Carbon dioxide Capturing, and Sequestration (CCS) is a promising technique that helps mitigate the amount of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere. CCS process mainly involves capturing CO2 at the industrial plant, followed by transportation and injection into a suitable geological storage, under supercritical conditions. Saline aquifers are among the best geological storage candidates due to their availability, high storage capacity and injectivity. Despite the CCUS technology promise, several public safety concerns remain to be address, including but not limited to reservoir/wellbore stability and integrity, CO2 leakage, ground deformation (uplift) and induced seismicity. The injected supercritical CO2 is trapped through different mechanisms in the host reservoir including (i) structural and stratigraphic trapping, (ii) residual trapping, (iii) solubility trapping, and (iv) mineral trapping. Dissolution of CO2 into the formation brine creates an acidic environment, which is highly reactive. The potential mineral dissolution in reservoir rocks can enhance the storage capacity and reservoir injectivity, while the secondary precipitation of minerals can decrease the storage capacity and injectivity. However, the geochemical processes triggered by CO2 injection can potentially degrade the mechanical properties of the reservoir rock, which can consequently disturb the wellbore-stability, reservoir integrity, and lead to significant reservoir compaction. Furthermore, injecting CO2 changes the stress-regime by increasing pore-pressure in the reservoir and its surroundings, which can potentially reactivate the existing faults, leading to induced seismicity. In this research, experiments were performed to evaluate the variation of porosity and pore-connectivity of intact sandstone specimens upon injecting CO2-enriched brine. In addition, the permeability evolution during the CO2-enriched brine injection process was evaluated under different reservoir condition. The mechanical impacts of injecting CO2-enriched brine were evaluated by comparing the mechanical properties (i.e., elastic, strength, seismic and time dependent properties) before and after injecting CO2-enriched brine. In addition, to evaluate the response of fractured reservoirs to CO2 injection, CO2-enriched brine was injected into a limestone and varyingly cemented (i.e., calcite and quartz cemented) sandstone specimens that were artificially fractured. The experimental results were used to numerically simulate CO2 injection into a core-scale porous medium to investigate the changes in CO2 concentration and mass transfer mechanism under different porosity, permeability, and injection pressure values. The experimental results of injecting CO2-enrihed brine to the intact (non-fractured) specimens revealed permeability enhancement and mechanical weakening caused by mineral dissolution. The extent of changes in permeability and mechanical properties of rock specimens varied under different reservoir conditions (i.e., pressure, salinity, and temperature). The mechanical weakening increased the possibility of induced seismicity, which consequently resulted in decreasing the allowable injection pressure of CO2. However, the permeability increase resulted in enhancing CO2 mass transfer and accelerating the solubility trapping in the brine aquifer.

Book excerpt: Large volumes of CO2 captured from carbon emitters (such as coal-fired power plants) may be stored in deep saline aquifers as a means of mitigating climate change. Storing these additional fluids may cause pressure changes and displacement of native brines, affecting subsurface volumes that can be significantly larger than the CO2 plume itself. This study aimed at determining the three-dimensional region of influence during/after injection of CO2 and evaluating the possible implications for shallow groundwater resources, with particular focus on the effects of interlayer communication through low-permeability seals. To address these issues quantitatively, we conducted numerical simulations that provide a basic understanding of the large-scale flow and pressure conditions in response to industrial-scale CO2 injection into a laterally open saline aquifer. The model domain included an idealized multilayered groundwater system, with a sequence of aquifers and aquitards (sealing units) extending from the deep saline storage formation to the uppermost freshwater aquifer. Both the local CO2-brine flow around the single injection site and the single-phase water flow (with salinity changes) in the region away from the CO2 plume were simulated. Our simulation results indicate considerable pressure buildup in the storage formation more than 100 km away from the injection zone, whereas the lateral distance migration of brine is rather small. In the vertical direction, the pressure perturbation from CO2 storage may reach shallow groundwater resources only if the deep storage formation communicates with the shallow aquifers through sealing units of relatively high permeabilities (higher than 10 x 18 m2). Vertical brine migration through a sequence of layers into shallow groundwater bodies is extremely unlikely. Overall, large-scale pressure changes appear to be of more concern to groundwater resources than changes in water quality caused by the migration of displaced saline water.

Despite relatively high levels of dissolved CO2, originating from depth and producing geysering at one well, pH depression and consequent trace element mobility are relatively minor effects due to the buffering capacity of the aquifer. However, local contamination due to influx of saline waters in a subset of wells is significant. Geochemical modeling of major ion concentrations suggests that high alkalinity and carbonate mineral dissolution buffers pH changes due to CO2 influx. Analysis oftrends in dissolved trace elements, chloride, and CO2 reveal no evidence of in-situ trace element mobilization. There is clear evidence, however, that As, U, and Pb are locally co-transported into the aquifer with CO2-rich saline water. This study illustrates the role that local geochemical conditions will play in determining the effectiveness of monitoring strategies for CO2 leakage. For example, if buffering is significant, pH monitoring may not effectively detect CO2 leakage. This study also highlights potential complications that CO2carrier fluids, such as saline waters, pose in monitoring impacts ofgeologic sequestration.

Book excerpt: In response to increasing concerns over release of anthropogenic greenhouse gases the Arbuckle saline aquifer in south-central Kansas has been proposed as a potential site for geologic storage for CO2. Two wells (KGS 1-32 and 1-28) have been drilled to provide data for site specific determination of the storage potential of the Arbuckle. Cores from specific depths within Arbuckle (4164`-5130`) were utilized for study and flow-through experiments. Examination of formation rocks by thin section studies, SEM, XRD and CT scans was carried out to characterize the mineralogy of the core. Dominant mineralogy throughout the formation is dolomite with large chert nodules and occasional zones with pyrite and argillaceous minerals. Carbonate-silica contacts contain extensive heterogeneity with sulfide minerals and argillaceous material in between. Extensive vugs and microfractures are common. This study focuses on three zones of interest: the Mississippian pay zone (3670`-3700`), a potential baffle in Arbuckle (4400`-4550`) and the proposed CO2 injection zone (4900`-5050`). Drill stem tests and swabbed brine samples collected from 13 depths throughout the aquifer reveal a saline brine (~50,000-190,000 TDS) dominated by Na, Ca2 and Cl−. Elemental ratios of major cations with Cl− demonstrate a typical saline aquifer system. Cl/Br ratios reveal mixing between primary and secondary brines within the aquifer. Ca/Cl and Mg/Cl ratios suggest effect of dolomitization within the brines. [delta]18O and [delta]2H isotopes and Li/Cl ratios in the brine suggest the separation of upper and lower Arbuckle by a baffle zone. Swabbed waters provide Fe speciation data and reveal the importance of it in the system. Laboratory experiments carried out at 40°C and 2100 psi using formation core plug and collected brine identify reaction pathways to be anticipated when supercritical CO2 is injected. Results showed fluctuating chemistries of elements with Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+ and Cl− increasing during the first 15 hours, while Fe, S, and SO42− decrease. For the next 15 hours a reverse trend of the same elements were observed. Alkalinity and pH show inverse relationship throughout the experiment. We conclude that dominant reactions will occur between brine, CO2 and dolomite, calcite, chert, pyrite and argillaceous minerals. There is no perceived threat to freshwater resources in Kansas due to CO2 injection.
