Book excerpt: This memorandum introduces the problem of delayed, brittle failures associated with hydrogen in steel, particularly high-strength steel. It is intended to help the steel user determine if he has such a problem. The effects of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of steel are dealt with, and the behavior of material susceptible to delayed, brittle failure is described. Also, the effects of such factors as strength level, magnitude of applied stress, hydrogen content, steel composition, test temperature, and strain rate on hydrogen embrittlement and the susceptibility to hydrogen-induced, delayed, brittle failure are discussed. Possible sources of hydrogen in steel and the types of tests useful in determining the susceptibility to delayed failure are outlined. (Author).

Frequently such a brittle failure occurs at a stress that is only a fraction of the nominal yield strength. Considerable controversy exists over whether such failures result from two separate and distinct phenomena or whether there is but one mechanism called by two different names. Stress-corrosion cracking is the process in which a crack propagates, at least partially, by the stress induced corrosion of a susceptible metal at the advancing tip of the stress-corrosion crack. There is considerable evidence that this cracking results from the electrtrochemical corrosion of a metal subjected to tensile stresses, either residual or externally applied. Hydrogen-stress cracking is cracking which occurs as the result of hydrogen in the metal lattice in combination with tensile stresses. Hydrogen-stress cracking cannot occur if hydrogen is prevented from entering the steel, or if hydrogen that has entered during processing or service is removed before permanent damage has occurred. It is generally agreed that corrosion plays no part in the actual fracture mechanism. This report was prepared to point out wherein the two fracture mechanisms under consideration are similar and wherein they differ. From the evidence available today, the present authors have concluded that there are two distinct mechansims of delayed failure. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report deals with hydrogen induced embrittlement and stress cracking of high strength steel parts. Selected mechanical methods involving the different types of test specimens for the measurement of hydrogen embrittlement or delayed failure, and relevant methods for the quantitative determination of hydrogen extracted from embrittlement susceptible specimens are presented. Embrittlement resulting from pickling and chemical milling are considered. In addition, case studies of failures are included dealing with electroplated steel aircraft components, weldments, the petroleum industry, parts installed in boilers, pressurized water reactors, pressurized hydrogenation units, and parts cathodically protected. Different techniques for restoring ductility or preventing delayed failure are also included. A new thermodynamic approach to the interpretation of the hydrogen embrittlement phenomenon is offered and a number of variables which control the generation or minimization of hydrogen embrittlement is analyzed and discussed in the light of electrochemical kinetics.

Book excerpt: Weldment cracking is a broad complex field. Even if one considers only cracking of steel weldments, the problems range from cracking at temperatures near the solidus during welding to cracking at room temperature days, weeks, or months after welding is completed. Numerous reports of investigations in this field are contained in the published and unpublished literature. However, most of these reports cover only a particular problem in a specific area of the broad field of weldment cracking. This review attempts to cover the major aspects of the entire field of weldment cracking. Necessarily, the review is for the most part general, only being specific in a few instances to illustrate a point. (Author).

Book excerpt: Fracture-toughness testing using principles of fracture mechanics has developed to the point where it can be used as a basis for selection of materials, for estimating limiting design stresses assuming the presence of small flaws, and for analyzing failures. Current methods of measuring plane-stress and plane-strain fracturetoughness parameters are presented in this report. The specimens include center-cracked, edge-cracked, single-edge-cracked, surface-cracked, and notched round bars, which are subjected to tensile loading, and notched bars for bend tests. The different types of specimens permit evaluating sheet, plate, bar stock, and forgings as well as material from failed structures. Application of fracture-toughness parameters to design of high-strength structures is reviewed for both static and fatigue loading. Consideration of the fracture-mechanics concepts in design should lead to fewer problems with brittle fracture in high-strength structures. (Author).
