Book Synopsis Dynamic Response Characteristics of a Model Arch Dam by : Charles D. Norman
Download or read book Dynamic Response Characteristics of a Model Arch Dam written by Charles D. Norman and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vibration tests were conducted on a 1:24-scale model of the North Fork Dam (Near Auburn, Calif.), a double-curvature arch dam, to determine natural frequencies, mode shapes, and hydrodynamic pressures. The mode shapes, natural frequencies, and hydrodynamic pressures were determined from tests using two-vibrators mounted on the crest of the dam. Hydrodynamic pressures at the dam-reservoir interface were also determined from tests in which the vibrator was attached to the downstream foundation of the dam. The hydrodynamic pressures calculated using Westergaard;s theory and a theory for arch dams developed by Perumalswami and Kar accurately predicted the measured pressure at frequencies below the first mode frequency of the dam. The differences in the two theories were insignificant. The accuracy of the Ritz analysis improved considerably as more nodes in flexible regions of the dam were loaded. However, the lowest eigenvalues were computed using the subspace iteration method. For the full reservoir, the natural frequencies decreased by 20-30% when the foundation was included in the finite element model. The difference was less when the reservoir was empty. The calculations using the subspace iteration scheme and including the foundation agreed closely with experimental mode shapes and corresponding natural frequencies.

Book Synopsis Mathematical and Computational Aspects by : Carlos A. Brebbia
Download or read book Mathematical and Computational Aspects written by Carlos A. Brebbia and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the edited versions of most of the papers presented at the 9th International Conference on Boundary Elements held at the University of Stuttgart, Germany from August 31st to September 4th, 1987, which was organized in co-operation with the Computational Mechanics Institute and GAMM (Society for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics). This Conference, as the previous ones, aimed to review the latest developments in technique and theory and point out new advanced future trends. The emphasis of the meeting was on the engineering advances versus mathematical formulations, in an effort to consolidate the basis of many new applications. Recently engineers have proposed different techniques to solve non-linear and time dependent problems and many of these formulations needed a better mathematical understanding. Furthermore, new approximate formulations have been proposed for boundary elements which appeared to work in engineering practice, but did not have a proper theoretical background. The Conference also discussed the engineering applications of the method and concentrated on a link between BEM practitioners, industrial users and researchers working on the latest development of the method. The editors would like to express their appreciation and thanks to Ms. Liz Newman and Mr. H. Schmitz for their unstinting work in the preparation of the Conference.

Book Synopsis Seismic Safety Evaluation of Concrete Dams by : Chong Zhang
Download or read book Seismic Safety Evaluation of Concrete Dams written by Chong Zhang and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-10-23 with total page 671 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The consequences of a large dam failing can be disastrous. However, predicting the performance of concrete dams during earthquakes is one of the most complex and challenging problems in structural dynamics. Based on a nonlinear approach, Seismic Safety Evaluation of Concrete Dams allows engineers to build models that account for nonlinear phenomena such as vertical joint slippage, cracks, and cavitation. This yields more accurate estimates. Advanced but readable, this book is the culmination of the work carried out by Tsinghua University Research Group on Earthquake Resistance on Dams over the last two decades. - Nonlinearity characteristics of high concrete dams, seismic analysis methods, evaluation models - A systematic approach to nonlinear analysis and seismic safety evaluation of concrete dams - Includes nonlinear fracture of dam-water-foundation interaction system, dynamic fluid-structure - Covers soil-structure interactions, and meso-scale mechanical behavior of concrete are all international front issues of the field
