Book excerpt: Investigation of the feasibility of using endothermic reactions to augment the latent and sensible heat of fuels for cooling engines operating under a high mach number regime is continuing. Studies in the literature continue to maintain the desirability and feasibility of producing vehicles with hypersonic flight speeds and suggest some areas of advantage of hydrocarbons. Laboratory studies on the dehydrogenation over Pt/Al2O3 of a number of mixtures of naphthenes have been made including methyl-Decalin and dicyclohexyl as well as the pure components, with additional studies on Decalin. About 220 dehydrogenation catalysts have been prepared using a variety of metals and supports. Propane and an advanced jet fuel were tested as possible heat sink fuels in our fuel system simulation test reactor under thermal cracking conditions. Our packed bed reactor program included herein, has been rewritten and simplified resulting in a considerable saving in both human and computer time. The thermal stability of MCH, Decalin and a naphthenic jet fuel were all critically, but uniquely, dependent on O2 concentration in the region below about 10 ppm. The ignition delay behavior of both ethane and ethylene was found to be considerably different from other hydrocarbons in the shock tube, the ignition delay reaching a minimum in the region of E/R = 0.5 with two different temperature coefficients which are dependent upon total reactives concentration.

Book excerpt: The investigation of the feasibility of utilizing the endothermic and enthalpic capacity of hydrocarbons to fuel and cool high speed aircraft is continued. Calculation of the cooling requirement for a Mach 8 supersonic combustion ramjet engine under standard conditions indicate that this would be about 1900 Btu per pound of fuel. The possibility of utilizing the dehydrogenation of bridged-ring naphthenes for providing additional heat sink has been studied but no suitable catalysts have been found for this reaction. Studies on methods accelerating the thermal cracking of paraffins by means of additives has shown some promise. In the dehydrogenation of naphthenes over supported platinum catalysts the stability of the catalyst was found to be inversely proportional to the pore size of the support, and is also affected by the composition of the support. Efforts to induce the dehydrogenation of methylcyclohexane using dispersed catalysts has met with some success. Also quite marked variations in the rate and type of reaction have been observed depending on the type and source of the metal used for the reactor tube. A large number of additional granular catalysts have been tested for their activity in dehydrogenation of MCH.

Book excerpt: The Air Force Research Laboratory's Propulsion Directorate is developing higher energy density hydrocarbon fuels for application in reusable liquid rocket engines. For increased performance and operability, next generation engines will require better thermal stability understanding of hydrocarbon fuels under high heat fluxes. Of the existing thermal stability test rigs, none have the ability to accurately simulate the high heat flux conditions that will exist in the cooling channels of these new high-pressure hydrocarbon engines. To design and test fuels to meet the high reliability and reusability requirements proposed for these engines, the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) at Edwards AFB has designed the High Heat Flux Facility (HHFF) using experience gained from past thermal stability test rig experiments. In order to design a facility capable of simulating the higher heat fluxes expected in the channels, CFD++, a Metacomp Technologies Inc. computational fluid dynamics software suite, was employed to optimize the design prior to manufacture. Conjugate heat transfer calculations were performed in a single computational domain containing the copper heater block and the fluid channel of the new test rig design. The parameters of interest during each experiment will be heat transfer coefficient, degree of coking and corrosion in the channel, and pressure drop as a function of heat flux, wall temperature, Reynolds number, channel material, fuel composition and pressure. AFRL's HHFF will be an important tool for facilitating the development and transition of new advanced hydrocarbon fuels.

Book excerpt: Schafer had previously performed the Hydrocarbon Boost Study (HBS), which was a detailed engine design and analysis effort for AFRL/PRSE outlining the performance potential for LOX/hydrocarbon boost engines using an oxidizer rich staged combustion cycle and fuel cooling for the thrust chamber. At that time, a preliminary evaluation was made to assess the impact of new advanced hydrocarbon fuels being developed by AFRL on system performance. Those studies indicated that using the new AFRL advanced hydrocarbons (AHC) could make the IHPRPT Phase II goals of Isp and T/W more easily attainable, assuming that the new fuels could be retained for chamber cooling. Some of the potential AHC candidates are poorly suited for chamber cooling due to limited temperature rise capability or monopropellant tendencies. Such AHCs could be incorporated in an engine configuration that uses LOX instead of the AHC as the chamber coolant. Before LOX cooled systems can be pursued, two issues must be tackled: 1) justification of the system configuration and performance potential; 2) satisfactory experimental demonstration of LOX regen cooling coupled with oxidizer film cooling (OFC). The present analysis successfully addresses the first issue, and paves the way for experimental verification of LOX cooling and OFC characterization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The incentive of using fuels with greater density and better handling characteristics than hydrogen is important. Hydrocarbons have limited cooling capability; but additional heat sink capacity may be realized by allowing the hydrocarbon fuel to undergo a phase change, thus absorbing the latent heat of vaporization, and then allowing the gaseous fuel to react endothermically and to form combustible products. Endothermic reaction requires heat addition and the reaction products furnish additional cooling by absorbind sensible heat. Endothermic reactions can be classified as either thermal or catalytic. Thermal reactions are simplest in application, but have the two disadvantages of low reaction rates at temperatures below 1200F and of relatively low heats of reaction in comparison to catalytic reactions. For this reason, the catalytic endothermic reaction has received the most effort. Catalytic studies thus far have shown that the group of hydrocarbons with the greatest reactivity are the naphthenes. Laboratory investigations have indicated that the methylcyclohexane (MCH)/platinum on alumina system has a total heat sink capacity of approximately 2000 British Thermal Units (BTU)/pound of fuel at 1340F at a volumetric flow rate of 100 cubic feet/hour of fuel/cubic foot of catalyst and at a pressure of 10 atmospheres. Book excerpt: Fuel-cooled thermal management, including endothermic cracking and reforming of hydrocarbon fuels, is an enabling technology for advanced aero engines and offers potential for cycle improvements and pollutant emissions control in gas-turbine engine applications. The successful implementation of this technology is, however, predicated on the use of conventional multi-component hydrocarbon fuels and an understanding of the combustion characteristics of the reformed fuel mixture. The objective of this research is to develop and demonstrate the technologies necessary for utilizing conventional multi-component hydrocarbon fuels for fuel-cooled thermal management, including the development of the endothermic potential of JP-7 and JP-8+100, a demonstration of the combustion of supercritical/endothermic fuel mixtures, and conceptual design of a fuel-air heat exchanger.

Book excerpt: With both the Air Force and NASA interested in developing reusable hydrocarbon-fueled engine technologies for reusable launch vehicles, there is an increased need to better understand the thermal stability of hydrocarbon fuels under high heat fluxes encountered during regenerative cooling. Currently, no existing thermal stability test rig can accurately simulate the high heat flux conditions that will exist in the cooling channels of these new high-pressure hydrocarbon engines. CFD++, a Metacomp Technologies Inc. computational fluid dynamics software suite, was employed to optimize the design prior to manufacture. Conjugate heat transfer calculations were performed in a single computational domain containing the copper heater block and the fluid channel of the new test rig design. The first tests conducted in the facility will be highly instrumented and will be used to validate the CFD++ calculations.
