Book Synopsis Power from the North by : Caroline Desbiens
Download or read book Power from the North written by Caroline Desbiens and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2013-05-03 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1970s, Hydro-Québec declared in a publicity campaign “We Are Hydro-Québécois.” The slogan symbolized the extent to which hydroelectric development in the North had come to both reflect and fuel French Canada’s aspirations. The slogan helped Quebecers relate to the province’s northern territory and to accept the exploitation of its resources. In Power from the North, Caroline Desbiens explores how this culture of hydroelectricity helped shape the landscape during the first phase of the James Bay hydroelectric project. Policy makers and citizens did not, she argues, view those who built the dams as mere workers – they saw them as pioneers in a previously uninhabited land now inscribed with the codes of culture and spectacle. This insightful work shows that if Quebec hopes to engage in truly sustainable resource development, all actors must bring an awareness of their cultural histories and visions of nature, North, and nation to the negotiating table.

Book excerpt: Hydro-Québec manages one of the largest power grids on the continent. It is among the most profitable, the least expensive, and the greenest. With a stunning renewable energy rate of 99.8%, Quebec has two-generation advance on places like California and Ontario. Combining a reporters' style with thought, philosophy, and a touch of humour, Julie Barlow and Jean-Benoît Nadeau look into Hydro-Québec's future as the public utility marks the 75th anniversary of its founding. The future is now and it is electric. It spans widely diverse fields such as big data aggregation centers, exports to the United States, acquisitions in Mexico, Chinese buses, mega-batteries, bitcoins, charging stations, and much more. Between now and Hydro-Québec's 100th anniversary, the challenges will be vast. As habits and expectations change radically, everything will be on the table, from solar panels to rates, from remote heating control to underground power lines, and from the environment to relations with the indigenous peoples.

Book Synopsis Social and Environmental Impacts of the James Bay Hydroelectric Project by : James F. Hornig
Download or read book Social and Environmental Impacts of the James Bay Hydroelectric Project written by James F. Hornig and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1999-12-13 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first mega-scale hydro project to be built in the sub-Arctic, capable of generating as much electricity as fifteen nuclear power plants, its impact includes disruption of vast areas in an extremely fragile ecosystem as well as displacement of native peoples and the introduction of dangerous levels of mercury into their food supply. The debate over these complex environmental issues has been further complicated by political issues stemming from the importance of the project to the economic development of Quebec and the sale of at least ten percent of the electricity generated the United States. The contributors examine core issues of the controversy both in relation to James Bay and to other large hydroelectric projects, such as the Aswan dam in Egypt and the Three Gorges dam in China. Providing insights from an unusual variety of disciplines, the authors offer important considerations that must be taken into account as Quebec assesses additional phases of hydroelectric development of the watershed east of Hudson Bay. Contributors include Raymond B. Coppinger (Hampshire College), Bill Dale Roebuck (Dartmouth Medical School), Will Ryan (Hampshire College), Adrian Tanner (Memorial University), Stanley L. Warner (Hampshire College), Kessler E. Woodward (University of Alaska), and Oran R. Young (Dartmouth College).

Download or read book White Gold written by Karl Froschauer and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past fifty years, Canadians have seen many of their white-water rivers dammed or diverted to generate electricity primarily for industry and export. The rush to build dams increased utility debts, produced adverse consequences for the environment and local communities, and ultimately resulted in the layoff of 25,000 employees. White Gold looks at what went wrong with hydro development, with the predicted industrial transformation, with the timing and magnitude of projects, and with national and regional initiatives to link these major projects to a trans-Canada power grid.
