Book excerpt: Nestled in the quiet hills of Vermonts Green Mountains lies the shire town of Hyde Park. Located in the heart of Lamoille County, its vibrant history reflects the essence of small-town culture, community, and pride. Chartered in 1781 and first settled by John McDaniel in 1787, the town was named after Capt. Jedidiah Hyde, who settled in town with his family from Norwich, Connecticut. One of Vermonts former governors, Carroll S. Page, was an integral part in the towns development in the late 1800s as he was successful in establishing the worlds largest calfskin factory. Surviving the flood of 1927 and the hurricane of 1938, the town in the 1900s experienced growth in business and prosperity. Through vintage photographs of tree-lined streets, mountain views, dairy farms, mills, churches, schools, and the people who bring the very essence of this community to life, Hyde Park celebrates the spirit of this historic town.

Book Synopsis Practicing Protestants by : Laurie F. Maffly-Kipp
Download or read book Practicing Protestants written by Laurie F. Maffly-Kipp and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2006-08-28 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays explores the significance of practice in understanding American Protestant life. The authors are historians of American religion, practical theologians, and pastors and were the twelve principal researchers in a three-year collaborative project sponsored by the Lilly Endowment. Profiling practices that range from Puritan devotional writing to twentieth-century prayer, from missionary tactics to African American ritual performance, these essays provide a unique historical perspective on how Protestants have lived their faith within and outside of the church and how practice has formed their identities and beliefs. Each chapter focuses on a different practice within a particular social and cultural context. The essays explore transformations in American religious culture from Puritan to Evangelical and Enlightenment sensibilities in New England, issues of mission, nationalism, and American empire in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, devotional practices in the flux of modern intellectual predicaments, and the claims of late-twentieth-century liberal Protestant pluralism. Breaking new ground in ritual studies and cultural history, Practicing Protestants offers a distinctive history of American Protestant practice.

Book Synopsis Preparing the Pastors We Need by : George A. Mason
Download or read book Preparing the Pastors We Need written by George A. Mason and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2012-11-06 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid the widespread discussion about 'the future of the church,' an important point is sometimes overlooked: tomorrow's church will depend to a great extent on the new pastors of today who will serve and guide our churches in the years ahead. George Mason's Preparing the Pastors We Need: Reclaiming the Congregation's Role in Training Clergy makes a timely intervention, asking us to redefine pastoral leadership by analyzing how, in fact, pastors are made in the first place. The book highlights an exciting development in the training of pastors: pastoral residency programs and mentoring. Mason demonstrates that these programs work best when the congregations themselves, not just leadership or staff, are an active participant in the training. In this way, churches begin to reclaim their rightful role in the formation of the ministers that will serve them. And, at the same time, they become healthier and more effective churches. Mason gives us the analogy of physician training. Medical school produces graduates with extensive knowledge of the body, but a practicing doctor will require several more years of internship and residency. Similarly, our seminaries and divinity schools produce men and women with good biblical knowledge, but they might not prepare a graduate for the task of helping a bereaved parishioner cope with the sudden loss of a loved one. Moreover, such areas as finances, budgets, personnel management, and vocational identity are also not well suited to seminary study. Mason shows that congregation-based mentoring and residency are excellent ways to bridge this gap.
Book Synopsis Feasting on the Word: Year C, Volume 2 by : David L. Bartlett
Download or read book Feasting on the Word: Year C, Volume 2 written by David L. Bartlett and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2009-10-12 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this new lectionary commentary series, Westminster John Knox offers the most extensive resource for preaching on the market today. When complete, the twelve volumes of the series will cover all the Sundays in the three-year lectionary cycle, along with movable occasions, such as Christmas Day, Epiphany, Holy Week, and All Saints' Day. For each lectionary text, preachers will find four brief essays--one each on the theological, pastoral, exegetical, and homiletical challenges of the text. This gives preachers sixteen different approaches to the proclaimation of the Word on any given occasion. The editors and contributors to this series are world-class scholars, pastors, and writers representing a variety of denominations and traditions. And while the twelve volumes of the series will follow the pattern of the Revised Common Lectionary, each volume will contain an index of biblical passages so that nonlectionary preachers, as well as teachers and students, may make use of its contents.
Book Synopsis Faith as a Way of Life by : Christian Scharen
Download or read book Faith as a Way of Life written by Christian Scharen and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2008-06-03 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian ministry is deeply concerned with proclaiming the transforming power of God??'s gift of faith in the daily lives of disciples. How is it, then, that so often Christian faith fails to orient our lives? Christian Scharen offers the compelling argument that such a way of life needs communities and leaders that build and communicate faith as foundation. Pastors will be able to impart this vision of faith, he cautions, only if they themselves are compelled by it and if their parishioners find that the model helps them make sense of life as a whole. Faith as a Way of Life is one response to this call for reflection on Christian faith as an orienting force impacting every aspect of daily life. Scharen examines the powerful languages that can replace faith language? emotion-driven therapeutic and results-driven managerial models? and shows how their domination leads to faith becoming a weak sibling. He directly engages the problems these languages often lead to with the hope of fostering pastoral leadership grounded in a vision of faith as a way of life. Faith as a Way of Life is an engaging and encouraging examination of how pastoral leaders can model and mediate faith as the beating heart pumping life-blood through every sphere of life
