Book excerpt: This work is devoted to the theory and approximation of nonlinear hyper bolic systems of conservation laws in one or two space variables. It follows directly a previous publication on hyperbolic systems of conservation laws by the same authors, and we shall make frequent references to Godlewski and Raviart (1991) (hereafter noted G. R. ), though the present volume can be read independently. This earlier publication, apart from a first chap ter, especially covered the scalar case. Thus, we shall detail here neither the mathematical theory of multidimensional scalar conservation laws nor their approximation in the one-dimensional case by finite-difference con servative schemes, both of which were treated in G. R. , but we shall mostly consider systems. The theory for systems is in fact much more difficult and not at all completed. This explains why we shall mainly concentrate on some theoretical aspects that are needed in the applications, such as the solution of the Riemann problem, with occasional insights into more sophisticated problems. The present book is divided into six chapters, including an introductory chapter. For the reader's convenience, we shall resume in this Introduction the notions that are necessary for a self-sufficient understanding of this book -the main definitions of hyperbolicity, weak solutions, and entropy present the practical examples that will be thoroughly developed in the following chapters, and recall the main results concerning the scalar case.

Book excerpt: Since the creation of the term "Scientific Computing" and of its German counterpart "Wissenschaftliches Rechnen" (whoever has to be blamed for that), scientists from outside the field have been confused about the some what strange distinction between scientific and non-scientific computations. And the insiders, i. e. those who are, at least, convinced of always comput ing in a very scientific way, are far from being happy with this summary of their daily work, even if further characterizations like "High Performance" or "Engineering" try to make things clearer - usually with very modest suc cess, however. Moreover, to increase the unfortunate confusion of terms, who knows the differences between "Computational Science and Engineering" , as indicated in the title of the series these proceedings were given the honour to be published in, and "Scientific and Engineering Computing", as chosen for the title of our book? Actually, though the protagonists of scientific com puting persist in its independence as a scientific discipline (and rightly so, of course), the ideas behind the term diverge wildly. Consequently, the variety of answers one can get to the question "What is scientific computing?" is really impressive and ranges from the (serious) "nothing else but numerical analysis" up to the more mocking "consuming as much CPU-time as possible on the most powerful number crunchers accessible" .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The success of CFD as a tool for the analysis of many fundamental and practical fluid dynamics problems justifies this publication which serves as a state-of-the-art reference, capturing the multidisciplinary spirit of CFD in SI in-depth articles. Together, they provide a comprehensive review of research on fluid flow, viscous flow (incompressible and compressible) and turbulence needs testing of previously advocated fundamental concepts and computer-based techniques. Findings from numerous international conferences are also shared.

Book excerpt: We introduce and develop a new approach for upwind biasing: the hybrid upwind splitting (HUS) method. This original procedure is based on a suitable hybridization of current prominent flux vector splitting (FVS) and flux difference splitting (FDS) methods. The HUS method is designed to naturally combine the respective strengths of the above methods while excluding their main deficiencies. Specifically, the HUS strategy yields a family of upwind methods that exhibit the robustness of FVS schemes in the capture of nonlinear waves and the accuracy of some FDS schemes in the resolution of linear waves. We give a detailed construction of the HUS methods following a general and systematic procedure directly performed at the basic level of the field by field (i.e. waves) decomposition involved in FDS methods. For such a given decomposition, each field is endowed either with FVS or FDS numerical fluxes, depending on the nonlinear nature of the field under consideration. Such a design principle is made possible thanks to the introduction of a convenient formalism that provides us with a unified framework for upwind methods. The HUS methods we propose bring significant improvements over current methods in terms of accuracy and robustness. They yield entropy-satisfying approximate solutions as they are strongly supported in numerical experiments. Field by field hybrid numerical fluxes also achieve fairly simple and explicit expressions and hence require a computational effort between that of the FVS and FDS. Several numerical experiments ranging from stiff 1D shock-tube to high speed viscous flows problems are displayed, intending to illustrate the benefits of the present approach. We assess in particular the relevance of our HUS schemes to viscous flow calculations. Coquel, Frederic and Liou, Meng-Sing Glenn Research Center...
