Book excerpt: The notion of strategic groups has recently emerged as a critical perspective for uncovering firms' strategic postures/recipes and competitive market structures. Firms within strategic groups generally adopt similar strategic recipes and compete more intensely than firms across strategic groups. Building on recent research, the authors develop the concept of hybrid strategic groups, which blend the strategic recipes of more than one group, in contrast to existing conceptualizations of strategic groups, where either firms tightly follow the recipes of a strategic group (i.e., core firms) or firms loosely follow the recipes of a strategic group (i.e., secondary firms). Thus, competition among firms depends not only on the strategic group but also on the overlap of that strategic group with other strategic groups. The authors devise a combinatorial optimization-based classification procedure utilizing a bilinear model that accommodates multiple variable batteries that can estimate hybrid strategic groups. The proposed methodology is illustrated by using archival data on public banks. For this illustration, the hybrid strategic group solution outperforms ordinary cluster analyses and offers critical insights into the nature of competition among firms.

Here Porter claims that competitive strategy is the search for a favorable competitive position in the industry, which can erode or improve, depending on a firm's choice of strategy. He derived a conceptual typology of three generic strategies that has already become a classic among scholars. They are cost leadership, differentiation and focus strategies. Just recently Michael Raynor (2007) challenged Porter's widely accepted typology, by including another dimension in the discussion that previously did not find consideration: risk. He claims that firms that execute pure strategies are much more exposed to corporate risk than firms that execute hybrid strategies. Two arguments support his view. First Porter's and other studies include what is called a "survivor bias," meaning that firms that went bankrupt during the investigation (with a pure strategy) do not play a role in the analysis. Second firms that have hybrid strategies are much more flexible when market preferences shift and are therefore less exposed to strategic uncertainty. Raynor's work is a valuable extension to the strategic management literature that leads to an assessment of strategic choice on at least two dimensions: profitability and risk. The contribution of the study is then twofold. First Porter's typology is tested with German data. Secondly Raynor's argument is tested, whether the very same firms that are more successful have a higher risk of running into corporate bankruptcy. In order to have the necessary information, the first section of the study reviews the literature. Here the generic strategies are explained and the most important studies on the topic are summarized in a table. Then the "Strategy Paradox" is presented that describes Raynor's argumentation for an increase in risk with pure strategies. Two conflicting theories are mentioned that deal with the question

However, existing studies on the relationship between hybrid strategy and firm performance have largely neglected the role of the organizational architecture. This study tests the hypothesis that an ambidextrous organizational architecture positively moderates the relationship between a hybrid strategy and firm performance. Particularly, the roles of specific organization structures and HRM practices (individual ambidexterity) and information and communication technologies (technological ambidexterity) are assessed. Further, a hybrid strategy's performance impact is defined in two distinct ways and measured relative to three different comparison groups, that is, the entire sample, no-emphasis strategies, and pure strategies. A novel multi-source dataset on German and Polish manufacturing firms is constructed from three independent sources, including a dataset on objective firm performance indicators. Evidence is found that a hybrid strategy positively impacts firm performance in the presence of organizational ambidexterity, but negatively impacts firm performance in the absence of organizational ambidexterity. These findings are robust across two types of organizational ambidexterity, three different comparison groups, and further robustness tests.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hybrid organizations combine the structure and culture of for-profit companies with the commitment to social good of non-profit organizations. This structure enables them to address social problems in an economically sustainable manner and to capitalize on consumer demand for responsibly-made products. While hybrids must strike a delicate balance to achieve their profit, social, and environment targets, some degree of quantitative growth is necessary in order for them to have the impact they seek and return value to all their stakeholders. Recent literature on hybrid organizations does not focus on the different stages of a company's life-cycle nor does it address the challenges of successfully maintaining a hybrid structure over the course of a company's development. Combining this idea of specific strategic phases with the Hybrid Organization's Sustainability- Driven Business Model presented by Hoffman et a/ (in press, 2011), we can explore economic growth strategies for hybrids while identifying the tensions inherent to or amplified by the hybrid growth process. I built four case studies which identify thirteen tensions experienced as hybrid organizations grow. Based on how these companies addressed the challenge of maintaining economic growth while minimizing mission drift, I concluded that it is possible to maintain triple bottom line values and practices during growth, although there is considerable risk that a company will adopt a more conventional business model. The decision to grow a hybrid organization depends on the goals of the founders, but a strategic partnership with an existent traditional business group was found to be particularly useful as a financial growth strategy. With my thesis, I offer a contribution to practice based on uncovering the root causes of growth tensions for hybrid organizations and a contribution to the literature which builds upon Hoffman's model.
