Crystalline nanostructures have special properties associated with electrons and lattice vibrations and their interaction. The result of spatial confinement of electrons is indicated in the nomenclature of nanostructures: quantum wells, quantum wires, quantum dots. Confinement also has a profound effect on lattice vibrations. The documentation of the confinement of acoustic modes goes back to Lord Rayleigh's work in the late nineteenth century, but no such documentation exists for optical modes. It is only comparatively recently that any theory of the elastic properties of optical modes exists, and a comprehensive account is given in this book. A model of the lattice dynamics of the diamond lattice is given that reveals the quantitative distinction between acoustic and optical modes and the difference of connection rules that must apply at an interface. The presence of interfaces in nanostructures forces the hybridization of longitudinally and transversely polarized modes, along with, in polar material, electromagnetic modes. Hybrid acoustic and optical modes are described, with an emphasis on polar-optical phonons and their interaction with electrons. Scattering rates in single heterostructures, quantum wells and quantum wires are described and the anharmonic interaction in quantum dots discussed. A description is given of the effects of dynamic screening of hybrid polar modes and the production of hot phonons.

Moreover, its spectrum and dispersion laws may differ from ones for excitations arising in the bulk materials. The study of such excitations can give fundamentally new information about the optical and transport properties of nanostructures. The interaction of charged particles with polar optical phonons can lead to the large radius polaron creation in the materials with high ionicity. This chapter deals with the results of our theoretical investigations of the polaron states in quantum wells, quantum wires, and quantum dots. The charged particle and exciton interaction with both bulk and interface optical phonons are taken into account. The original method has been developed taking into consideration an interface phonon influence. The enhancement conditions are found for both strong and weak interactions. It is established that the barrier material dielectric properties give a decisive contribution to the polaron binding energy value for strong electron-phonon interaction. The manifestation of strong polaron effects is a pronounced demonstration of the interface optical phonon influence on optical and transport properties of nanostructures.

Book excerpt: The research was devoted to the theoretical investigation of lattice vibrations in low-dimensional heterostructures and bulk materials with strong polaronic coupling. The purpose of the research has been to develop the phonon theory for technologically-important materials such as nitrides of Ga and Al as well as to locate new phonon-related effects which can be utilized in artificially-created heterostructures. The electron-phonon interaction has been considered quantum mechanically. The main findings can be summarized briefly as follows: 1. Consideration of carrier-induced renormalization of acoustic phonon spectra in quantum wires revealed the possibility for the Peierls phase transition into a state with periodic lattice distortion and charge-density waves of macroscopic period in artificially-prepared structures. The phase diagram for this transition has been determined. An analytical dispersion relation for the coupled electron-phonon excitation has been derived. 2. It is found that the drift of two-dimensional electrons in quantum wells can lead to efficient amplification (generation) of sub-THz coherent confined acoustic vibrations due to the Cerenkov effect when the velocity of the drifted electrons exceeds the sound velocity in the given medium. A theory has been developed to describe the confinement of acoustic modes propagating along the high-symmetry directions in cubic quantum wells. 3. A theory of confinement of optical phonon modes in wurtzite quantum wells has been developed. A formalism has been derived for calculation of electron scattering rates in optically anisotropic (uniaxial) crystals and quantum wells. 4. From the comparison of the energy losses to the lattice as function of the carrier velocity obtained in frameworks of perturbative model and path-integral Thornber-Feynman approach it is found that perturbation theory can be applied for materials with intermediate polaronic coupling such a GaN and AlN. Book excerpt: Spectrally resolved phonon transport is important for understanding nanoscale heat flow, which have implications for the realization of efficient thermoelectric and microelectronic cooling devices, for the realization of efficient cryogenic particle detectors, and for the realization of robust implementations of quantum computers. This thesis describes the development and utilization of a microscale phonon spectrometer. Aluminum superconducting tunnel junctions (STJ) are utilized for the emission and detection of non-thermal phonons with frequencies ranging from ~100 to ~870 GHz in silicon nanostructures. The energy resolution of the spectrometer is ~6080 [mu]eV, corresponding to a frequency resolution of ~15-20 GHz, which is about 20 times better than the energy resolution of conventional thermal transport measurements that rely on a Planck distribution of phonons. The spectrometer is utilized to probe surface scattering and phonon backscattering in silicon. To probe surface scattering, silicon nanosheets were fabricated, their surface roughness (~1 nm) was determined using atomic-force microscopy, and their phonon scattering rates were measured. Our results indicate that the well-known Ziman theory, which takes into account the roughness of the surface, underestimates the probability for totally diffusive scattering in nanostructures. To probe phonon backscattering, phonon 'enhancers' (~90 [mu]m deep) were etched around the STJ detectors, and the measured backscattered phonon signal increases with the number of enhancers. Using a geometric analysis of the phonon pathways, we show that the mechanism of the backscattered phonon enhancement is due to confinement of the ballistic phonon. These results have implications for ballistic phonon transport, phonon-mediated detection, and thermal transport studies, and highlight the important effects of phonon scattering from surfaces and interfaces in nanoscale geometrical designs. Finally, a facile room-temperature method, comprising ammonium sulfide treatment and electrophoretic deposition, was developed for assembling colloidal copper sulfide (Cu2-xS) nanoparticles into highly electrically conducting films. Electronic properties of the treated films are characterized with a combination of Hall Effect measurements, field-effect transistor measurements, temperature-dependent conductivity measurements, and capacitance-voltage measurements, revealing their highly-doped p-type semiconducting nature. In addition to being important for solutionprocessed electronics, the periodicity introduced by nanoparticles and their arrays presents a model system for probing phonon transport in complex interfaces.
