Book excerpt: Emergent macrophytes are an integral part of prairie marshes and involved in many of the services that make these ecosystems valuable. Water depth and hydroperiod are two environmental variables that can influence the growth and nutrient content of emergent macrophytes. This study looked at the growth and nutrient content response of hybrid cattail (Typha x glauca) to water depth and hydroperiod in two prairie marshes in southern Manitoba, Canada. Above- and belowground samples of hybrid cattails were collected along a water depth gradient at Oak Hammock Marsh, Canada, and analyzed for biomass, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, total Kjeldahl nitrogen content, shoot height, and density. A second dataset was obtained from the Marsh Ecology Research Program (MERP) experiment, and used to determine the biomass and nutrient content response of the hybrid cattail following one or two years of drawdown.

Book excerpt: Common cattail (Typha latifolia) is a native plant species listed as an invasive weed by some regulatory agencies. While it is not listed as a noxious weed by the Commonwealth of Virginia, control of cattail populations in created forested wetlands is still mandated by some regulatory permit requirements and requires either mechanical removal, treatment with herbicide, or both. Permitting agencies reason that cattail removal will prevent interspecies competition between cattails and desirable planted tree species. This regulatory requirement has added significantly to the Virginia Department of Transportation's (VDOT) cost of wetland compensation and mitigation. However, some researchers have questioned spending resources on cattail removal since the data do not support the hypothesis that cattails retard or inhibit planted tree growth. Rather, created wetland vegetation communities demonstrate more complex relationships than can be explained by simple interspecies competition. A site's hydrology (generally, water that is too deep) appears to be the driving force in an increase in planted tree morbidity and/or a decrease in woody growth. Because of conflicting information in the literature, this study was undertaken to help clarify the environmental conditions (biological, chemical, and physical) that enable Typha spp. to rapidly colonize primary succession (created mitigation) forested wetlands. The vegetation of 20 VDOT-created forested wetlands was collected and analyzed during the 2006-2007 growing seasons. Further, the hydrology, nutrient dynamics, and vegetation were studied at four of those sites. The data showed that cattails, while present in young sites, were rare in mature created hardwood wetlands. Woody vegetation, particularly specific volunteer species, became prominent after 10 to 15 years. In addition, species such as bald cypress, black willow, and red maple trees were common dominants in the older sites. Preliminary data showed that the growth of planted bald cypress trees in cattail-dominated areas was not significantly different than in those surrounded by non-cattail herbaceous perennials. Environmental data indicated a weak relationship (trend) in cattail dominance and water depth, but there was no significant difference in environmental parameters. The study concludes that the resources used to eradicate cattails, except where the hydrology has been compromised, are better spent on seeding and/or planting woody species such as bald cypress, black willow, river birch, and red maple that are better adapted to the draw-down, plant, and then flood conditions that are frequently encountered on these sites. Additional research on the direct effect of perennial herbaceous plants on planted woody species growth is recommended.

Book excerpt: Interspecific hybridization is an important evolutionary process which can contribute to the invasiveness of species complexes. In this dissertation I used the hybridizing species complex of cattails (Typhaspp., Typhaceae) to explore some of the processes that could contribute to hybridization rates. Cattails in northeastern North America comprise the native T. latifolia, the non-native T. angustifolia, and their fertile hybrid, T. U+00d7 glauca. First, I examined whether these taxa segregate by water depth as habitat segregation may be associated with lower incidence of hybridization. I found that these taxa occupy similar water depths and therefore that habitat segregation by water depth does not promote mating isolationamong these taxa. I then compared pollen dispersal patterns between progenitor species as pollen dispersal can also influence rates of hybrid formation. Each progenitor exhibits localized pollen dispersal, and the maternal parent of first generation hybrids captures more conspecific than heterospecific pollen; both of which should lead to reduced hybrid formation. I then conducted controlled crosses using all three Typhataxa to quantify hybrid fertility and to parameterize a fertility model to predict howmating compatibilities should affect the composition of cattail stands. I found that highly asymmetric formation of hybrids and backcrosses and reduced hybrid fertility should favour the maintenance of T. latifoliaunder certain conditions. Finally, I used a population genetics approach to characterize genetic diversity and structure of Typhain northeastern North America to determine the extent to which broad-scale processes such as gene flow influence site-level processes. I concluded that hybrids are most often created within sites or introduced in small numbers rather than exhibiting broad-scale dispersal. This suggests that local processes are more important drivers of hybrid success than landscape-scale processes which would be expected to limit the spread of the hybrid. Though my findings indicate some barriers to hybridization in these Typha taxa, hybrid cattail dominates much of northeastern North America. My results therefore show that incomplete barriers tohybridization may not be sufficient to prevent the continued dominance of hybrids and that active management of invasive hybrids may be required to limit their spread.
