Book excerpt: This thesis presents two hybrid systems for quantum information processing - one joining cold ions and cold atoms and another coupling linear chains of atomic ions with photons via an optical resonator. The first experimental realization of a hybrid cold-ion / cold-atom system is presented in the form of Yb atoms trapped in a magneto-optical trap overlapped with Yb+ ions stored in a radio-frequency (RF) planar Paul trap. The overlap between the excited MOT atoms and the ion trap is used to obtain isotope-selective ion trap loading rates 104 times higher than previously achieved. The interaction between atoms and ions is measured by observing near-resonant charge-exchange collisions between Yb and Yb+ with a collision rate matching the classical Langevin cross-section. Momentum transfer between cold atoms and cold ions is observed via collisions of Yb+ ions with laser-cooled Rb atoms and a classical limit to the ion-atom collision energy in RF traps derived, with relevance to current ion experiments. The second part of the thesis presents the first integration of a scalable, microfabricated surface ion trap chip with an optical resonator. This chip trap is used to produce a linear array of ion traps and load these traps with isotopically-selected chains of Yb+ ions. The ion chains are overlapped with the mode of an optical resonator and the coupling of the individual ions to the resonator mode demonstrated by recording the frequency spectrum of the ions' near-resonance fluorescence. These measurements demonstrate the capability of the present system to store and process quantum information stored in short ion chains and to communicate this information via photons, with applications to large-scale trapped ion quantum information processing. The strong-near resonant optical field available inside the optical resonator may also be used to produce a periodic optical potential for trapped ions, with applications to quantum simulation.

Much progress with single atomic and molecular ion qubits has been made both in theory and experiment on the fundamental building blocks for scalable QIP architectures. Nonetheless, difficulty still remains for quantum network implementation and spectroscopy protocols for atomic and molecular ions, respectively. The objective of this thesis is to design and test the ion trap integration with photon resonators, which can facilitate coherent ion-photon state transfer in quantum networks, and microwave spectroscopy for molecular ion rotational states. The first part of the thesis describes a novel planar trap design with an integrated optical cavity. Proposals for photon number memory with trapped ions are presented, and experimental implementation for single ion cavity QED is explored. In addition, a study of vacuum-induced scattering loss increase is performed for mirror coatings at several temperatures and wavelengths, from which a method of retaining cavity finesse was developed. In the second part, an experiment is proposed for microwave quantum logic spectroscopy of molecular ions. With a cavity field to facilitate entanglement between co-trapped single atomic and molecular ions, a reliable and non-destructive spectroscopy method, as well as molecular ground state cooling can be realized.

This thesis focuses on the photon as a principal resource to perform quantum information tasks and on schemes to imprint quantum bits onto its various degrees of freedom. Its weak coupling to the environment makes the photon an ideal carrier to securely transmit information by quantum cryptographic protocols. Moreover, efficient implementations of quantum computing using solely linear optics have been proven. Unfortunately, scalability is not easily achieved by a purely photonic approach since the generation of indistinguishable single photons from multiple emitters remains a difficult task. Thus, proposals for more complex quantum networks suggest an architecture with single photons as information carriers between atomic ensembles that act as storage and processing nodes. Computations including a limited number of qubits, however, may be performed by the linear optics scheme. The thesis starts with the generation and characterization of single-photon states, using a source based on a single optically pumped quantum dot. The capability of these states to implement a quantum algorithm using linear optics and single-photon interference is experimentally demonstrated for the first time. Error correction makes the interferometric setup robust against phase-noise. After successful realization of this proof-of-principle experiment, attention is drawn to the need of plug-and-play single-photon sources. Especially quantum key distribution, the most advanced quantum information technology to date which has even found its way into commercial devices, requires compact and low-cost non-classical light sources.Therefore, a single-photon source based on electrically pumped quantum dots is presented that exhibits unmatched spectral purity and single-photon statistics. Results towards the realization of quantum networks are presented in the following chapters, covering the generation of narrow-band single photons which can efficiently couple to atomic resonances. Photons with a spectral width of less than 3 MHz are created by ultra-bright cavity-enhanced spontaneous parametric down-conversion, and their quantum statistics is studied in detail. A setup for time-bin encoding is demonstrated, capable of imprinting quantum information onto these narrow-band single photons. This thesis concludes with slow-light experiments in atomic ensembles as a model system for atom-photon interaction on the single-photon level. The described experiments demonstrate striking features that make the single photon one of the most remarkable physical systems for the field of quantum information.

This work reports on experiments using a hybrid quantum-optics set-up, comprising two separate linear ion traps and a resonant SPDC photon-pair source. It demonstrates the controlled interaction of single entangled photon pairs with a single trapped 40Ca+ ion. Preparing the ion as polarization selective absorber in the main polarization bases allows for the reconstruction of the biphoton quantum state, manifesting the photon entanglement in the absorption process. Beyond that, the thesis documents the implementation of additional experimental tools enabling quantum state transfer experiments from photons to single ions. A dedicated narrowbandwidth laser system is set up, laser sequences are developed for state discrimination and state rotations of ion qubits, and for the creation and characterization of coherent superposition states, of particular importance for state-transfer schemes. Finally, detection efficiencies of single Raman photons emitted by an ion are characterized with a well controlled single-photon source, and absorption probabilities of single photons are determined with a calibrated laser beam, providing precise values to assess efficiencies for different transfer scenarios.

However, the grand promises of this field remain unrealized, despite significant strides forward, due to the inherent difficulties of manipulating quantum systems. Simply put, it turns out that it is incredibly difficult to interact, in a controllable way, with the quantum realm when we seem to live our day to day lives in a classical world. In an effort to solve this challenge, people are exploring a variety of different physical platforms, each with their strengths and weaknesses, in hopes of developing new experimental methods that one day might allow us to control a quantum system. One path forward rests in combining different quantum systems in novel ways to exploit the benefits of different systems while circumventing their respective weaknesses. In particular, quantum systems come in two different flavours: either discrete-variable systems or continuous-variable ones. The field of hybrid quantum information seeks to combine these systems, in clever ways, to help overcome the challenges blocking the path between what is theoretically possible and what is achievable in a laboratory. In this thesis we explore four topics in the context of hybrid methods in quantum information, in an effort to contribute to the resolution of existing challenges and to stimulate new avenues of research. First, we explore the manipulation of a continuous-variable quantum system consisting of phonons in a linear chain of trapped ions where we use the discretized internal levels to mediate interactions. Using our proposed interaction we are able to implement, for example, the acoustic equivalent of a beam splitter with modest experimental resources. Next we propose an experimentally feasible implementation of the cubic phase gate, a primitive non-Gaussian gate required for universal continuous-variable quantum computation, based off sequential photon subtraction. We then discuss the notion of embedding a finite dimensional state into a continuous-variable system, and propose a method of performing quantum computations on encrypted continuous-variable states. This protocol allows for a client, of limited quantum ability, to outsource a computation while hiding their information. Next, we discuss the possibility of performing universal quantum computation on discrete-variable logical states encoded in mixed continuous-variable quantum states. Finally, we present an account of open problems related to our results, and possible future avenues of research.

Book excerpt: The last century has been characterized by the development of information theory and the consequent transformative impact of new technologies on societies around the world. It seems likely that the tremendous progress in nanoscience – the ability to manipulate microscopic systems at the level of a single atom – and the emergence of quantum information science, will be the key components of the next revolution; that of the new quantum technologies. Indeed, the ability to manipulate and control quantum systems has already found a variety of potential applications, ranging from the development of molecular nanoscale machines which exploit quantum coherence for their functioning, to metrological schemes where quantum effects are used to enhance the accuracy of measurement and detection systems to achieve higher statistical precision than is possible using purely classical approaches. This book presents the proceedings of the Enrico Fermi Summer School on Quantum Simulators (Course 198) held in Varenna, Italy, 22-27 July 2016. Topics covered included: cold atoms in optical lattices; trapped ions; solid state implementations; quantum many-body physics; quantum photonics; hybrid quantum systems; and transport phenomena. The book will be of interest to all those whose work is connected to the rapidly growing field of quantum technologies.
