Book excerpt: While observing trainers of exotic animals, journalist Amy Sutherland had an epiphany: What if she used their techniques with the human animals in her own life–specifically her dear husband, Scott? As Sutherland put training principles into action, she noticed that not only did her twelve-year-old marriage improve, but she herself became more optimistic and less judgmental. What started as a goofy experiment had such good results that Sutherland began using the training techniques with all the people in her life, including her mother, her friends, her students, even the clerk at the post office. Full of fun facts, fascinating insights, hilarious anecdotes, and practical tips, What Shamu Taught Me About Life, Love, and Marriage reveals the biggest lesson Sutherland learned: The only animal you can truly change is yourself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrity, Viability, and Accountability Perhaps there is no greater challenge in missions than money. Paul reminds us, “For we are taking pains to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord but also in the eyes of man” (2 Cor. 8:21). Money sufficient to assure the viability of one’s life work carries with it an insidious ethical virus that can easily infect the integrity and accountability of its stewards. The Realities of Money & Missions provides a unique level of credibility and transparency as it calls for evangelicals to reevaluate their relationship with money, both personally and corporately. Global case studies, workshops, and testimonials cover a broad range of topics such as: Misalignment between fiscal theology and practice Environmental stewardship, community development, and business as mission Mobilization, fundraising practices, and “faith financing” Short-term missions, patronage, and dependency Power dynamics and structural injustice The Realities of Money & Missions was not written by experts in the fields of investment, money management, or fundraising, but by men and women whose calling as missionaries, pastors, and administrators has brought them face-to-face with the complex, real-life issues involving the intersection of money and ministry. Read on and be challenged to change

We’ve all done that… Here’s one you may not have attempted… Ever get drunk and depressed on New Year’s Eve and order a personal trainer? Because I was so tipsy, I ordered three. When they all show up the next day, devilish smiles and looking at me with rippling muscles, sculpted abs, and tight butts, I feel even more out of shape. That’s not me, and why my cheating husband left me. My plan? Get in revenge shape enough to run the L.A. Marathon. To cross that finish line, I have to choose between three gods who want to make me into the woman I once was. Finnegan: Irish brogue, green eyes, slender build, and buns of steel. Pierce: Ex-Marine, brutish, built, blue eyes with thick legs like trees I want to climb. Cooper: Gorgeous struggling actor and single dad with stormy gray eyes who’s a little mean, but that will make me work harder. I can’t choose, so I hire all three. My pounds may not melt off so fast, but my panties sure do. These guys want me just the way I am. They don’t share clients, but they agree to share the heck out of me. When my husband wants me back, will Finn, Pierce, and Cooper stay my personal trainers, my best friends, and my lovers or will our love crash harder than a diet on New Year’s Day? – Love, Dr. Larissa Davenport *Includes strong MM scenes*

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At some point in a mother's life, her child--most likely, her daughter--will smile sweetly and say, "Mommy, I want to learn to ride a horse. And then I want to win a blue ribbon." What's a mother to do? (Or for that matter, a father, since he'll become involved too, even though ferrying the child to and from lessons and competitions is far more often the equivalent of a Soccer Mom.) Even people who rode when they were younger may not remember the ins and outs of the sport, and especially the way it's played these days. Riding to the rescue comes Susan Daniels, an experienced and accomplished Horse Show Mom. Taking the perplexed parent under her wing, she provides advice on locating a suitable lesson stable (including how to tell whether a particular instructor is right for your child, and what to do if he or she isn't), determining when - or whether - to buy a horse or a pony, outfitting horse and rider (must the animal's leg wraps and the child's ponytail ribbons match?), and understanding and coping with stable politics (such as when it's appropriate for barn managers and instructors to pay more attention to another youngster than to yours). When it comes to horse showing, the author explains how to tell when your child is ready for competition, what's expected of horse and rider at various levels of proficiency, which supplies Moms should always have on hand (safety pins and hair nets lead the list), how to deal with your child's triumphs and tears, and how to understand the complicated but crucial national and regional championship points systems. With pages of warm and encouraging humor, sound advice and illustrative true-life adventures from the worlds of hunter/jumper, Western, combined training, and dressage competition, The Horse Show Mom's Survival Guide is a valuable "leg up" for any parent whose youngster has that blue-ribbon gleam in her eye.

Book excerpt: At the end of Liberia's thirteen-year civil war, the devastated population struggled to rebuild their country and come to terms with their experiences of violence. During the first decade of postwar reconstruction, hundreds of humanitarian organizations created programs that were intended to heal trauma, prevent gendered violence, rehabilitate former soldiers, and provide psychosocial care to the transitioning populace. But the implementation of these programs was not always suited to the specific mental health needs of the population or easily reconciled with the broader aims of reconstruction and humanitarian peacekeeping, and psychiatric treatment was sometimes ignored or unevenly integrated into postconflict humanitarian health care delivery. Searching for Normal in the Wake of the Liberian War explores the human experience of the massive apparatus of trauma-healing and psychosocial interventions during the first five years of postwar reconstruction. Sharon Alane Abramowitz draws on extensive fieldwork among the government officials, humanitarian leaders, and an often-overlooked population of Liberian NGO employees to examine the structure and impact of the mental health care interventions, in particular the ways they were promised to work with peacekeeping and reconstruction, and how the reach and effectiveness of these promises can be measured. From this courageous ethnography emerges a geography of trauma and the ways it shapes the lives of those who give and receive care in postwar Liberia.

Book excerpt: Silent Invaders deals with the ubiquitous overuse of pesticides, which has led to unsustainable farming practices, imperiling the health of workers, consumers and the environment. The effects of these legal toxic products are studied from the perspective of women, as in some countries, particularly in the South, women make up 85 per cent or more of pesticide applicators. The volume covers a broad range of issues, from health to the need for regulation, to action that has been taken so far. It contains thirty-two essays written by authors from many nations, including India, and covers topics such as the Union Carbide gas leak at Bhopal twenty years ago (essay 29). The issue of pesticides is of particular interest at the moment due to the Centre for Science and Environment s reports on the presence of pesticide in mineral water and soft drinks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being able to perform any task with full attention has become one of the great unspoken-about challenges of modern life. As our culture has become more high-speed, techno-stressed, information-cluttered and media-saturated, we are getting pushed out of our focus zones without even realising it. If you work in a modern office, it is likely you are suffering from 'information fatigue syndrome', which means that even naturally bright and creative people are rendered incapable of making swift decisions, problem-solving efficiently or able to maintain appropriate energy levels. Award-winning psychologist Lucy Jo Palladino offers practical solutions for anyone juggling too much, who finds themselves in a state of 'continuous partial attention', seemingly unable to do any one task with full concentration. In order to help people combat the negative aspects of 'always-on' information culture, Palladino has come up with a new set of skills that will help readers beat distraction and win the fight against information overload. She provides eight sets of 'keys' that will unlock your best attention and help you balance adrenaline levels, even when you are under pressure or facing dull tasks. Rooted in sports performance psychology, yet practical and user-friendly, Palladino's cutting-edge methods will help you stay focused and enhance your performance in all areas of daily life where concentration is required.
