Download or read book Hunting in the Raw written by Al Lester and published by Raupo. This book was released on 2003 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lot has been written about the successes of deerstalkers and about venison recovery in general, but little has been committed to paper about things that go bump in the bush For every deer shot the average hunter has suffered a series of mishaps, misfires, clean misses, stuff-ups and other testing events. This book tells of Al Lester's less successful journeys into the bush. He tells tales about himself, his mates and, as always, the one that got away that was 'as big as a house, mate ' The majority of stories in the book are about deer hunting and are set throughout the South Island, with several jaunts in the North Island. However, Big Al also hunts possums, pigs, goats and goes in for a bit of trout poaching.

Book Synopsis It's A Bit Rugged, Mate by : Al Lester
Download or read book It's A Bit Rugged, Mate written by Al Lester and published by Penguin Random House New Zealand Limited. This book was released on 2014-07-23 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once described as 'Barry Crump meets Fred Dagg', 'Big Al' Lester is the modern-day master of the hunting genre. 'I'm often asked what inspired me to take up writing yarns about the mishaps and mayhem that I have endured while venturing into the New Zealand bush.' 'In truth, I am an average to poor hunter who has had more hunting cock-ups than the rest of the country combined. For every deer I've successfully shot, dozens have escaped only to hide in the bush peering back at me, clearly laughing at my stupidity. I have always managed to see the funny side of the situation and had a good old laugh at myself. I began to wonder if my stuff-ups, with a bit of humour and mayhem thrown in, might just make for good reading – the oddball, unusual, humorous, weird and fun side of hunting – and gave it a go. I must have got something right.'—'Big Al' Lester It's a Bit Rugged, Mate compiles the biggest and best yarns from Big Al's first three books – plenty of fun for those with a good keen sense of humour and a love for New Zealand's wild outdoors. Also available as an eBook
Book Synopsis Maine's Hunting Past by : Donald A. Wilson
Download or read book Maine's Hunting Past written by Donald A. Wilson and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maine has long been a well-known and frequently visited hunting region. Long ago, moose and caribou were abundant and as time passed, trappers have been able to earn a decent living pursuing choice and prized fur-bearing animals. Small game and waterfowl populations remained fairly stable over the years and have continued to increase in popularity. However, as large areas of habitat were cleared for timber, larger animals began to disappear and opulations dwindled. Trapping has since become a less favorable mode of producing income because of the low prices offered for native and raw fur. Maine's Hunting Past captures the pursuit of wild animals through a century of documentation. Since about 1850, animals have been taken for sport, for food, and for their hides. Hunting has long been not only a sport but also an industry, resulting in the increase and growth of sporting camps and an expanding number of guides. Maine's Hunting Past highlights favorite regions, featuring famous sporting camps and well-known guides. Big game, small game, upland birds, waterfowl, furbearers, and numerous photographs of trophy animals and large bag limits are all included.

Download or read book Hunting Caribou written by Henry S. Sharp and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Denésuliné hunters range from deep in the Boreal Forest far into the tundra of northern Canada. Henry S. Sharp, a social anthropologist and ethnographer, spent several decades participating in fieldwork and observing hunts by this extended kin group. His daughter, Karyn Sharp, who is an archaeologist specializing in First Nations Studies and is Denésuliné, also observed countless hunts. Over the years the father and daughter realized that not only their personal backgrounds but also their disciplinary specializations significantly affected how each perceived and understood their experiences with the Denésuliné. In Hunting Caribou, Henry and Karyn Sharp attempt to understand and interpret their decades-long observations of Denésuliné hunts through the multiple disciplinary lenses of anthropology, archaeology, and ethnology. Although questions and methodologies differ between disciplines, the Sharps' ethnography, by connecting these components, provides unique insights into the ecology and motivations of hunting societies. Themes of gender, women's labor, insects, wolf and caribou behavior, scale, mobility and transportation, and land use are linked through the authors' personal voice and experiences. This participant ethnography makes an important contribution to multiple fields in academe while simultaneously revealing broad implications for research, public policy, and First Nations politics.
