Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1960s Civil Rights Movement, weary Black Americans became fed up with mistreatment and sub par living standards. Demanding equal rights and justice, the student sit-in movement in Greensboro, North Carolina, became a vital part of Blacks making strides to become equal.Hunger Pains in Our Heads will describe the pressures leading up to that fateful day, describe the people involved in the event, and the lasting impact after that day. Rev. Mansel Philip McCleave was in the midst of these events as he was a Horticulture and Agriculture instructor at North Carolina A&T College, where the students attended school. He describes in great detail the days leading up to the Woolworth Student Sit-In Movement, describing the hopes, fears, and pressures the people felt at that time. He attempts to analyze the measures that led to North Carolina, being the site of such a stand, the people who took the stand, the history behind the stand, and the results of the stand.Written with both passion and intellectual depth, Hunger Pains in Our Heads, is a book that will spark lively discussions, critical debates, and in depth analysis of those events in many classrooms, religious institutions, and political forums.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year From an obesity and neuroscience researcher with a knack for engaging, humorous storytelling, The Hungry Brain uses cutting-edge science to answer the questions: why do we overeat, and what can we do about it? No one wants to overeat. And certainly no one wants to overeat for years, become overweight, and end up with a high risk of diabetes or heart disease--yet two thirds of Americans do precisely that. Even though we know better, we often eat too much. Why does our behavior betray our own intentions to be lean and healthy? The problem, argues obesity and neuroscience researcher Stephan J. Guyenet, is not necessarily a lack of willpower or an incorrect understanding of what to eat. Rather, our appetites and food choices are led astray by ancient, instinctive brain circuits that play by the rules of a survival game that no longer exists. And these circuits don’t care about how you look in a bathing suit next summer. To make the case, The Hungry Brain takes readers on an eye-opening journey through cutting-edge neuroscience that has never before been available to a general audience. The Hungry Brain delivers profound insights into why the brain undermines our weight goals and transforms these insights into practical guidelines for eating well and staying slim. Along the way, it explores how the human brain works, revealing how this mysterious organ makes us who we are.

Nothing about Beyond is what Martin expects, certainly not the strange, local boy who unexpectedly befriends Martin. Solo can canoe and climb trees and survive on his own in the wilderness, and Martin's drawn to him in a way he doesn't quite understand. But he's not sure he can trust Solo. In fact, can he trust anything about this strange island, where everyone seems to be keeping secrets?

As a former president of the United States, Anyalla Kaiko Mugabe tells the story of her triumphant years. How an ancient tribal princess from Zimbabwe transforms into the first female black president of the United States. The Queen of the south gave up her thrown and went on to become one of the most influential women that ever lived. Her eight-year reign as president was not only a monumental elevation for mankind, but the decisions that she makes in this significant place of power changed the entire world as we know it. Book excerpt: Things were starting to look pretty grim for Sam and Sally Edwards because he lost his job at the slaughterhouse and to top things off his wife never worked a day in her life so she wasn’t able to contribute to their marriage in a monetary way. Since they both lived in a small farming community called Cavendale and had nothing more than a high school education the handful of high-paying jobs would be out of their reach so they were both doomed to lead a poverty-stricken life unless they could get back up on their heels and turn things back around. Their electric bill would be due in the next couple of days and if they didn’t scrape up some cash quickly it would be lights out for the both of them. Knowing that in a couple of days, they would be without electricity they sat down at the kitchen table thinking of ways to get out of this devastating rut they both were in. Sam said “I know how we can turn things around, we can rent out one of our bedrooms, and that will bring in money so we can eat, and save us from having to spend the winter in the dark and freeze to death. His wife said, “That sounds like a good idea.” Sam kissed his wife and said, “I’ll head into town and see what interest I can drum up.” They both were starting to feel like help was on its way but no one in their right mind would want to rent a room at their house because they weren’t clean people and if something fell on the floor that’s where it stayed. They were just too lazy to clean up after themselves. Sam managed to bring back some interested people but when they stepped inside his home they held their breath and immediately turned around and told them they were not interested. Sam slammed the front door behind them as they got in their cars and drove off into the night. His wife told him, “Surely, we can think of something because if we don’t we’ll be living out in the streets soon.” Sam paced back and forth in the kitchen and said “I know we’ll ask our nice neighbors the Thompson’s to come over tomorrow night for dinner and rob them so we can stop the lights from being turned off.” His wife said, “If we must, then we must survive, and I’m not going to live out on the streets and beg for money and food.” Sam called the Thompson’s house on the phone and Mr. Thompson answered, and Sam invited him and his wife over for supper the next night, and Mr. Thompson’s response was “Sure, we’d be delighted to come over tomorrow night for dinner.” Sam hung up the phone and said to his wife, “They’ll be over for supper tomorrow night!” His wife said in excitement, “I can almost taste Mr. and Mrs. Thompson’s bloody heart in my mouth,” as she rubbed her belly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been said about happinessabout what it is and how to get it. Little has been said about how to stay happy. We all share the experience that happiness is hard to achieve and even harder to hold on to. We are not often happy, and when we are we dont stay happy for long. In contrast, we are often unhappy, and when we are it seems to be enduring. Why? In How to Be Happy in Spite of Yourself, author Dr. Robert Dawson offers a look at happiness and explains why instinct needs us to be unhappy. It answers the following questions: What is wrong with me or with others? Is something broken that needs to be fixed? Is it possible for me to be happy more of the time? Can I get better at snapping out of being unhappy? Dawson details the three-step habit we need to develop to moderate the negative effect of the human survival instinct on the quality of our life. When we realize our instinct is undermining our happiness and see it for what it isa normal and necessary automatic reaction to lifes challengeswe are on the way to being happy in spite of it.
