Book excerpt: Offering a social scientific look at humor's role in medical transactions, this volume is based on extensive field study in seven medical settings. It includes excerpts from dozens of actual conversations between patients and caregivers. Analysis of these episodes reveals that humor is a practical tool used to meet many medical objectives. It is used by patients to good-naturedly complain and to campaign for more personal attention, and by caregivers to get attention, make amends, insist on unpleasant routines, and establish rapport. Examining humor from many angles, the book begins with a phenomenological analysis of the essence of funny. This section describes what makes some things funny but not others, and how to distinguish between potentially funny and unfunny episodes in medical situations. From an ethnographic perspective, joking around is shown to be a persuasive element of medical culture. Examples illustrate how patients and caregivers use humor to negotiate the dialectics between helping and hurting, and individuality and compliance. Additionally, a close-up look at three medical transactions shows how humor is used to help a physical therapy patient overcome fear and queasiness, reduce the embarrassment of a mammography, and defuse a potential conflict between a student aide and a young patient. A final section examines techniques for initiating conversational humor. In sum, this volume provides an intimate and realistic look at medical conversations as they are conducted every day. It serves as a valuable complement to health communication texts and offers information of interest to health communication scholars, healthcare practitioners, and anyone interested in the effects and techniques of conversational humor. Richly grounded in naturally occurring data, the book can be understood and used effectively by both scholars and practitioners.

Book excerpt: "Humor and Violence examines the rich history of portraying Europeans in Central African art in images ranging from heart-wrenching scenes of human trafficking to playful parodies of colonialists. Z. S. Strother contends that the dialectic of humor and violence reveals deep insights into the psychology of power and resistance that continues to operate in the region today. Her argument is built on a set of works of art and demonstrates the important role that patronage and political and social history played in their creation. Strother conveys Central African ideas about how the therapeutic power of humor can initiate social change and upset power relations between oppressors and oppressed. This analysis plunges seemingly benign figures into a maelstrom of violence and crime -- rape, murder, torture, and forced labor on a massive scale. By restoring the dialectic of humor, this study reveals the complicated psychological codependency of Africans and Europeans over a long period of history and maintains that art plays a mediating function in the mechanics and ethics of power."--Front cover flap.

Book excerpt: "My reason for being in the tavern was important. I wanted to better understand the history of beer in Nova Scotia. Or more specifically, I wanted to know how it was that Nova Scotians became the foremost makers and drinkers of the stuff. In truth, Canada had long ago tumbled down the consumption of beer per capita mountain among the world?s nations, finding itself in paltry thirty-fourth place, lagging far behind beer-drinking powerhouses like Mexico and Botswana. And Nova Scotia, well, on average, Nova Scotians consumed only about eight litres per capita of beer per year, placing beery Bluenosers a scant eleventh among the provinces and territories, though we did have brew house bragging rights over the drinking denizens of Nunavut." After extensive initial research, author Steven Laffoley discovered that the history of beer in Nova Scotia was as cloudy as a good pumpkin lager or a cold wheat beer on a dark winter's day. So with an intrepid, albeit mildly inebriated, explorer's courage, he packed up his notebook and set off in search of Nova Scotia's beer-filled past, which, as it turned out, was far stranger than he expected. It was a fascinating tale of heartwarming heroes, despicable villains, astounding secrets, and a gruesome murder or two, all with the added amusements of Victorian cross-dressing tavern patrons and a few goats with a passion for chewing tobacco and ale. And now the story can be told. You may want to pour a good glass of IPA for this.
