Book excerpt: When humanism was first receiving widespread public attention in the West, through such publications as The Humanist Manifesto in 1933, unbeknownst to most Westerners humanism was proceeding on a parallel track in India, largely due to the efforts of philosopher and political activist M.N. Roy (1887-1954). Sadly, it wasn''t until the early fifties, at the end of Roy''s life that European humanists began to notice his work.To rectify the unfortunate neglect in the West of one of India''s premier intellectuals, philosopher Innaiah Narisetti has compiled this new collection of Roy''s most significant works. Roy conceived of humanism as a scientific, integral, and radically new worldview. Among many interesting selections in this volume, Roy''s "Principles of Radical Democracy: 22 Theses" is especially representative of his thinking. Here he emphasized ethics and eschewed supernatural interpretations as antithetical to his scientifically oriented conception of "new humanism." He also underscored the importance of universal education to make average people scientifically literate and to teach them critical thinking.Roy was not only a thinker but a doer as well. He spent six years in an Indian prison during the 1930s for opposing the British rule of India. For humanists, philosophers, political scientists, and others, M.N. Roy''s unique and still very relevant view of humanism will have great appeal and broad application beyond its original Indian context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an unconventional articulation of the political thinking in India in a refreshingly creative manner in more than one way. Empirically, the book becomes innovative by providing an analytically more grasping contextual interpretation of Indian political thought that evolved during the nationalist struggle against colonialism. Insightfully, it attempts to unearth the hitherto unexplored yet vital subaltern strands of political thinking in India as manifested through the mode of numerous significant socio-economic movements operating side by side and sometimes as part of the mainstream nationalist movement. This book articulates the main currents of Indian political thought by locating the text and themes of the thinkers within the socio-economic and politico-cultural contexts in which such ideas were conceptualised and articulated. The book also tries to analytically grasp the influences of the various British constitutional devices that appeared as the responses of the colonial government to redress the genuine socio-economic grievances of the various sections of Indian society. The book breaks new ground in not only articulating the main currents of Indian political thought in an analytically more sound approach of context-driven discussion but also provokes new research in the field by charting a new course in grasping and articulating the political thought in India. This volume will be useful to the students, researchers and faculty working in the fields of political science, political sociology, political economy and post-colonial contemporary Indian politics in particular. It will also be an invaluable and interesting reading for those interested in South Asian studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a modest attempt to seek an identity for Bharatiya Ways of Study and move away from the Western domination in social science. It attempts to negate the system of Euro-supremacist control and expose the dependence and unrelenting academic imperialism. It cautions against blind imitation without carefully testing against empirical realities of India to save the social sciences in general, and political science in particular, from possible bias. That is why this book aims at setting an alternative discourse in political science as against hegemonic discourse to diversify the outlook amenable to the historical and cultural context of India. Politics for a New India relies on objectivity and the analysis of world views drawn from our own intellectual traditions, as well as the metaphysical, philosophical, and ethical assumptions at the core of our political issues. It also takes into its inquiry all those problems which have not been adequately paid attention so far but are legitimately needed in current political discourse. These include the RSS ideology and practice; perspective of Dharma and Advaita; literary excursion; integral humanism; Hindu philosophy and women rights; Kerala model of development; uniform civil code, among others

Book excerpt: This book is made up of lectures given, for the most part, before the Society for Ethical Culture of Chicago. The premise tying all of these lectures together is that while not all religions teach morality, they are all based on ethical principles; that it is one's duty to obey the laws of ethics whether or not one professes a religion; and that men who would not obey them could do no good either to themselves or to others, in this world or the next. Moral action, ethics, Darwinism, the social ideal, personal morality, the ethics of Jesus, the failure of Protestantism and Unitarianism, and the basis of the ethical movement are among the topics discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A young Seema discovers a cache of letters and papers in a locker belonging to her deceased mother. Besides chronicling her far-roving life across Canada, USA, Mexico, and India, these offer a glimpse into her private history—her feelings for M, a major leader of the Communist movement in British India and abroad; her commitment to, not only him, but also his cause; and her struggle to keep alive her feelings for him after his disenchantment with Communism. Even as Seema’s mother grows increasingly cynical about the Communist cause, Seema blossoms into a rebel, voicing her dissent during the Emergency. If her insurgent spirit is curtailed, it is on account of a marriage that cramps her style. All at once, Seema’s story crisscrosses with her mother’s—as both women try making sense of lackluster alliances; as both find comfort in letters. A deftly woven tale spanning India’s pre- and post-Independence history, Letters to Mamma is, above all, a celebration of words. These are words staining missives; words connecting the contradictory worlds of idealism and reality; and words that remind readers why Keki N. Daruwalla remains one of India’s greatest writers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political Philosophy of M. N. Roy M.N. Roy may be best remembered as a philosopher of Radical Humanism. He propounded his new philosophy as a solution for the political, cultural and moral crisis which confronted mankind since 1945. His philosophy was in the nature of a 'Third Force' , as he believed that Communism, as it unfolded itself in the Soviet Union in the Stalinist era, was the greatest menace to human potentialities. He elaborated his schemes of 'Radical Democracy' and 'Humanist Politics' as integral parts of Radical Humanism to philosophically reconstruct a socially-cohesive state structure. The edifice of his philosophy rested on four laudable pillars viz. Rationalism, Humanism, Freedom and Materialism and spiritualism and no longer regarded man as a mere ' economic animal'. His philosophy asserted the supremacy of man in a socio-political system that transcended national boundaries. The study attempts a critical appraisal of Radical Humanism avoiding the adulation of a disciple and the approach of an uncharitable critic. It is an updated study, based on the author's three research dissertations besides other relevant literature. The first six chapters unfold the story of the evolution of Roy's philosophy and the seventh is a critical evaluation of the basic postulates of Radical Humanism. The study endeavors to get under the skin of real Roy, the visionary, who through his condemnation of orthodox Marxism as practiced in the Soviet Union had almost predicted its impending failure that actually happened in 1989. The study would be useful to academics, research scholars, general readers and post-graduate students of social sciences. The pro-Marxist and anti-Marxist intelligentsia should find the work objectively analytical.
