Book excerpt: As the first comprehensive reference for the eye, its support structures, diseases, and treatments, Encyclopedia of the Eye is an important resource for all visual scientists, ophthalmologists, and optometrists, as well as researchers in immunology, infectious disease, cell biology, neurobiology and related disciplines. This four-volume reference is unique in its coverage of information on all tissues important for vision, including the retina, cornea and lens. It also covers the physiological and pathophysiologic processes that affect all eye tissues. This Encyclopedia is invaluable for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who are seeking an introduction to an area of eye research. Each chapter explains the basic concepts and provides references to relevant chapters within the Encyclopedia and more detailed articles across the wider research literature. The Encyclopedia is also particularly useful for visual scientists and practitioners who are researching a new area, seeking deeper understanding of important research articles in fields adjacent to their own, or reviewing a grant outside their immediate area of expertise. Written by experts at a level that permits students to grasp key elements of a specific subject Provides an entryway into the major features of current eye research No other source puts this much information, so well-indexed and with so many helpful full color figures and graphics, in the hands of the ophthalmic scientist

Book excerpt: One of the most remarkable things about seeing is how effortless this complex task appears to be. This book provides a comprehensive overview of research on the myriad complexities of this task. Coverage includes such classic topics as color, spatial, and binocular vision, areas that have seen a recent explosion of new information such as motion vision, image formation and sampling, and areas where new tools have allowed a better investigation into processes (e.g. neural representation of shape, visual attention). Seeing is a needed reference for researchers specializing in visual perception and is suitable for advance courses on vision.

Book excerpt: This volume was designed to focus on the problems of perception and originally was to have been solely edited by Professor Hans-Lukas Teuber who was a member of the editorial board which initiated production of the Handbook. Accordingly, he issued invitations to a number of researchers III perception asking them to contribute chapters written in a style described III his words: " . . . Ire hope that no author lI'ill feel COl/strained to undertake a major search of the literature: he could In'ite, instead. on an area in which he has been quite actire himse?t~ and II'here most of the issues are immediately obt"ious to him. In this Iray, the IITiting of the chapter should be cnjoyable rather than a chore . . it should result in a personal account of the state of a given area rather than in an encyclopedic treatise . . . the field deserves this sort of summary ret'iell", particularly (f it is pointed toward the future and speeds the convergence of det'elopments in sensory physiology and psychological studies of perception, " With the growing burden of national and international commitments includ ing departmental headship, Professor Teuber felt that it would be wise to share the editorial responsibilities for this volume and accordingly, asked Professors Richard Held and Herschel Leibowitz to co-edit the volume with him in the same spirit as outlined in his invitation to authors. They agreed to help in this task.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A modified Linear Estimation Approach was performed to reconstruct current sources within the heart. Based on MRI data sets the Boundary Element Method was used to create tailored multicompartment models of the human thorax which were used to solve the forward problem of magnetocardiography. The ability of the proposed method was demonstrated for the localization of a single current dipole as an example of a focal source. By means of introducing small shiftings to all reconstruction dipoles during linear estimation solution as well as performing a successive focussing strategy ignoring places without significant electrical activity the method could easily be extended to the reconstruction of real 3D sources. Based on a special minimum-norm solution the source volume can be estimated applying a finite element approximation using cube elements. The size of an extended current source can be estimated by superimposing the reconstructed dipoles to an equivalent dipole and comparing the corresponding volume with the sphere which would be related to the equivalent dipole. The deviation of these volumes can be taken as a criterion for non-dipolarity of sources.

Book excerpt: This book gathers together information concerning the interaction of hu man stereopsis with various stereoscopic viewing devices, especially those used in teleoperator systems. The book is not concerned with machine vi sion systems. In these systems, data analogous to human binocular visual information is gathered and analyzed by some device for use in decision making or control, often without the intervention of a human. This subject presents problems of considerable complexity; it has generated many inge nious solutions and has been the inspiration of much work of fundamental importance. But the problems are quite different from those encountered in the design of systems intended to exploit human stereopsis, and there is surprisingly little cross-fertilization between the two fields. 1. 1. SCOPE AND STRUCTURE OF THIS BOOK The book surveys the known properties of the human unaided binocu lar system, and where possible gives the magnitude of parameters that are of use in designing technical systems involving a human operator. Chapter 2 summarizes the human stereoscopic vision literature including the depth distortions of unaided stereoscopic viewing. Chapter 3 describes a variety of 3-D image viewing techniques and deals with the performance limits of human stereopsis assisted by simple stereoscopic viewing devices. Chapter 4 extends this treatment to television binocular viewing devices, and shows 1 2 Chapter 1 that the nature of the depth distortion is changed. Chapter 5 analyzes the geometry of single camera stereoscopic systems, and discusses the advan tages and disadvantages of such systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ICANN, the International Conference on Artificial Neural Networks, is the official conference series of the European Neural Network Society which started in Helsinki in 1991. Since then ICANN has taken place in Brighton, Amsterdam, Sorrento, Paris, Bochum and Lausanne, and has become Europe's major meeting in the field of neural networks. This book contains the proceedings of ICANN 98, held 2-4 September 1998 in Skovde, Sweden. Of 340 submissions to ICANN 98, 180 were accepted for publication and presentation at the conference. In addition, this book contains seven invited papers presented at the conference. A conference of this size is obviously not organized by three individuals alone. We therefore would like to thank the following people and organizations for supporting ICANN 98 in one way or another: • the European Neural Network Society and the Swedish Neural Network Society for their active support in the organization of this conference, • the Programme Committee and all reviewers for the hard and timely work that was required to produce more than 900 reviews during April 1998, • the Steering Committee which met in Skovde in May 1998 for the final selection of papers and the preparation of the conference program, • the other Module Chairs: Bengt Asker (Industry and Research), Harald Brandt (Applications), Anders Lansner (Computational Neuroscience and Brain Theory), Thorsteinn Rognvaldsson (Theory), Noel Sharkey (co chair Autonomous Robotics and Adaptive Behavior), Bertil Svensson (Hardware and Implementations), • the conference secretary, Leila Khammari, and the rest of the
