Download or read book Report on Human Rights Practices Country of Estonia written by U. S. Department of State and published by . This book was released on 2012-12-25 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estonia is a multiparty, constitutional democracy with a unicameral parliament, a prime minister as head of government, and a president as head of state. The prime minister and cabinet generally represent the party or coalition of parties that have a majority of seats in parliament. Parliamentary elections held on March 6 were generally free and fair. Security forces reported to civilian authorities. While there were no reports of widespread human rights abuses, there continued to be reports of trafficking, primarily of women for sexual exploitation and men and women for forced labor elsewhere in the EU. Conditions in some detention centers remained poor, and lengthy pretrial detention continued to be a problem. The country made only slow progress during the year in naturalizing its large population of stateless persons. There were human rights problems in other areas. There were allegations that police used excessive force during the arrest of suspects. Societal problems included domestic violence and discrimination against women in the workplace.

Book Synopsis Democracy and Human Rights in Multicultural Societies by : Matthias Koenig
Download or read book Democracy and Human Rights in Multicultural Societies written by Matthias Koenig and published by UNESCO. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By unanimous adoption of the Universal Declaration of Cultural Diversity, the UNESCO Member States accepted a new ethical approach to respect diversity as a guiding principle for democratic societies. While support for the Declaration remains strong, there is a general awareness that the democratic management of multicultural societies needs rethinking and further development. This publication examines the political governance of cultural diversity, specifically how public policy-making has dealt with the claims for cultural recognition that have increasingly been expressed by ethno-national movements, language groups, religious minorities, indigenous peoples and migrant communities. Its principle aim is to understand, explain and assess public policy responses to ethnic, linguistic and religious diversity. Adopting interdisciplinary perspectives of comparative social sciences, the contributors address the conditions, forms, and consequences of democratic and human-rights-based governance of multi-ethnic, multi-lingual and multi-faith societies.--Publisher's description.
