Book excerpt: Scientific Essay from the year 2006 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 96 Prozent, Beijing Institute of Technology, course: Human Resource Management in International Firms, 15 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This paper analyzes in how far human resource management (HRM) of the United States of America (USA) will influence European HR practices. When investigating the special features of American and European HRM it becomes obvious that the USA is characterized by low level of state interference and stronger emphasize on individualism. In contrast, in Europe greater involvement of the states and European supranational agencies as well as huge organizational and managerial responsibility towards employees is usual. What is more, trade unions have a high social legitimacy in Europe compared to the USA. Nevertheless, due to different cultural and institutional perspectives of the individual European countries it is difficult to define a common HRM model within Europe. Hence, the discussion of various regional clusters arose in recent years. Although some European countries move towards directional convergence (whether countries share the same trend), final convergence (whether countries are becoming more alike) is still far from being realized. Consequently, it should be assumed that neither American HR practices will significantly influence European HRM nor that Europe will lead towards convergence of a common model in the future. Countries will continue to be different in their HR practices due to their unique cultural and institutional frameworks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Union is expanding. Wide cultural, political and economic differences within the Union have a significant impact on the management of human resources, so crucial to the success of any enterprise. Businesses within the EU have regularly tried to re-evaluate the context in which they work, and for investors from other continents, notably the US and Asia, the potential for expensive mistakes is only too real. In this comprehensive new book, the varied and particular challenges for human resource management in the EU are fully explored. Written in conjunction with the European Association for Personal Management (EAPM), the book offers country-by-country analysis from native authors, assessing the contexts faced by businesses working in thirteen different states: from founding EU members like France and Germany, to relatively new entrants like Latvia and Poland. The book also includes a chapter on Turkey, an emerging economy currently outside the Union. The key issues are addressed from both theoretical and practical perspectives, whilst each chapter is also complimented by best practice case studies.

Book excerpt: International Human Resource Management provides a concise overview of the rich HR landscape in Europe to help students develop cutting-edge people management approaches. The innovative, multi-disciplinary approach of the book provides a holistic picture of the key issues on the individual, organizational and societal levels. The book is divided into three parts: Part I explores the institutional and economic contexts that organizations face in different European countries. This section goes beyond exploring issues of diversity to include a discussion of the impact of the recent financial crisis. Part II concentrates on the key challenges and trends facing HR, including an aging population, migration, and sustainability, and analyzes the unique and inventive ways these are addressed in different countries across Europe. Part III focuses on the fundamental HR areas – recruitment and selection, performance management and rewards, employment relations, global careers, and so forth – and the ways in which these policies and practices are shaped by the European Union. With broader coverage, the latest thinking in the field, and cutting-edge cases, examples and insights, this book will prove a highly valuable resource for students, researchers and practitioners working in human resource management, and international business.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against the backdrop of ancient cultures, a communist legacy and eventual institutional atrophy, many of the societies of Central and Eastern Europe have pursued aggressive development trajectories since the early 1990s. This part of Europe is now characterized by a rising economic heterogeneity and a rapidly changing socio-cultural context, underscored by waves of restructuring, privatization, increasing foreign direct investment and an emerging individualism. While there has been a growing interest in the transition economies in the past number of years, the contemporary nature of human resource management in these societies is not well-documented. This long-awaited text seeks to chart the contemporary landscape of HRM in this region. In doing this, it describes key aspects of the transition process as experienced in each of the economies under consideration, as well as describing key legislative and labour market developments and reforms. Finally, it discusses key trends in HRM policy and practice.

This book enables managers and students to become "fluent" in the many various environments, approaches and practices that exist across Europe for managing human resources. The text employs comprehensive comparable representative data collected longitudinally during the last decade and it also draws directly on the expertise of leading HRM scholars. Entirely fresh analyses of HRM in Europe, based on new and hitherto unpublished data are presented and this analysis is critically important for students, researchers and also for practitioners. The book is divided into three parts: concepts and theoretical issues , trends in relation to these issues and comparisons between individual countries, and summaries and conclusions on the issue of convergence and divergence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conducting business across national borders is nothing new; the Knights Templar were banking internationally as long ago as 1135. But modern globalization processes raise different challenges, and as the world becomes smaller and labour movements more common, an international understanding of human resource management is essential. The second edition of International HRM provides a fully updated and revised analysis of this important area. Its innovative, multi-disciplinary approach allows a holistic picture to emerge in which key issues are assessed from organizational, individual and societal perspectives. The collection is divided into three parts: the contemporary internationalization context the management of international employees strategic issues facing international HR managers. Supported by new research, and including work from eminent writers in the field, this book discusses issues as diverse as the relative absence of women in international work, the ethical merits of localization, and the context faced by organizations like the United Nations. It is a valuable tool for all students, researchers and practitioners working in international business and human resource management.
