Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Physiology, Vol. 4 of 5 Movement and Sensation are the two extremes of the processes of animal life by which the organism is brought into direct relation with the outer world. Movements are always objective in character and can be studied directly by external observation. Sensations are invariably subjective, and can only be directly analysed by introspection, and indirectly inferred from the expressional movements which are their external concomitants. It follows that the physiology of sensation in man is the necessary starting point for the comparative physiology of sensation in animals; and the intimate observation of our own consciousness is the only available basis for judging the psychical activities of animals or of other men. All organs of the body that are supplied with afferent nerves continually send information of their functional state to the central nervous system, and exert a reflex controlling influence along the efferent nerves without passing the threshold of consciousness. At other times they send to the centres messages which are not entirely subconscious, but emerge vaguely and indefinitely in consciousness as a more or less decided sense of well-being or the reverse. Or again, the messages from the different organs to the centres may definitely cross the threshold of consciousness and give rise to distinct sensations which differ in quality and intensity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Physiology, Vol. 1 of 4 "Good wine needs no bush," but it will perhaps not be an infringement of this maxim to introduce, in a few words, Professor Luciani's excellent Text-Book of Physiology to the English-reading public. The Italian Text-book is now in its third edition, the final pages being in the Press. One or other of the earlier editions has been translated into French, German, and Russian, and it is a matter for surprise that we have had to wait so long for an English version. In the making of physiological text-books, we are at the parting of the ways. The physiologists of the past generation were brought up to know with familiarity all that had been recently done in physiological research, whether in vertebrates or invertebrates, in animals or in plants. The facts were not so numerous that they could not be stored in the memory without cumbering the judgment, and Physiologists could in some sort be first-hand authorities on all branches of the subject. That condition has been gradually passing away, and it is hardly possible for any one who is not of the old school to write an advanced text-book covering the whole ground of Physiology. Thus the text-book of single authorship is giving way to the text-book of multiple authorship. The latter, whatever its merits, has not the unity of view and the sense of proportion which belong to the former - qualities very important in a book intended for students. Professor Luciani's book, whilst describing phenomena with considerable detail, treats lucidly the broad principles to be deduced from them. It stands midway between the text-book which confines itself to summing up the results of physiological investigation, and that which gives also a minute historical account of the progress of investigation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Physiology, Vol. 3 of 5 From the physiological standpoint the higher animal organism may be treated as a system of blood-forming organs, at the service of a sensory-motor system. The first of these - the vegetative or involuntary system - subserves the internal life of the body, and its function is to prepare and keep approximately constant the mass and constituents of the blood and lymph which provide the common nutriment the second - the organic or voluntary system subserves the phenomena of external life, and maintains and regu lates the relations between the organism and its environment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Human Physiology: Designed for the Use of Students and Practitioners of Medicine This volume is Offered to the medical profession of the United States, as a text-book for students, and also as a means of commu nicating, in a condensed form, such new facts and ideas in physio logy, as have marked the progress of the science within a recent period. Many of these topics are of great practical importance to the medical man, as influencing, in various ways, his views on pathology and therapeutics; and they are all of interest for the physician who desires to keep pace with the annual advance of his profession, as indicating the present position and extent of one of the most progressive of the departments of medicine. It has been the Object Of the author, more particularly, to pre sent, at the same time with the conclusions which physiologists have been led to adopt on any particular subject, the experimental basis upon which those conclusions are founded; and he has on deavored, so far as possible, to establish or corroborate them by original investigation, or by a repetition Of the labors of others. This is more especially the case in that part of the book (section I.) devoted to the function Of Nutrition; and as a general thing, throughout the work, any statement of experimental facts, not expressly referred to the authority of some other writer, is given by the author as the result of direct personal observation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Human Physiology To set fixed limits to the subject matter of physiology is a very difficult task, because, properly conceived, large portions of the entire group of medical and biological sciences belong to its province. A text-book designed primarily for medical students can, however, regard the field as somewhat more restricted; for the prospective physician has abundant opportunity to amplify his knowledge of the bodily functions from his other studies. Hence in this book I have followed the usual custom and have brought together only so much of our information respecting the human body as can be described as pertaining to its normal functions. The discoveries made in the realms of practical medicine, of experimental pathology and of pharmacology, which in many respects are so full of significance for the processes of the body, are, therefore, for the most part passed by. In like manner the facts of comparative physiology have been alluded to only in exceptional cases, since an exhaustive discussion of them would have increased the size of the book to a not inconsiderable extent. For the same reason I have been unable to find a place for the short histological discussion customary in text-books. I do not regard this as an error, for a necessarily brief and superficial resume of the most important histological facts could be of no great service, since the student needs a more extensive knowledge of the finer structure of the body and must in any case obtain this from the text-books devoted especially to that subject. I do not therefore at all mistake the great importance of histology for physiology; on the contrary, I would recommend that in the, study of a text-book of this science a text-book of histology (and one of anatomy) be always at hand in order to combine the physiological facts with the histological and anatomical facts. Physiological chemistry also has developed so far that more and more it can claim the right to be regarded as an independent science. On the other hand it is not possible to present the physiological facts without reference to the chemical processes of the body. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Human Physiology: Designed for the Use of Practitioners and Students of Medicine IN preparing the first edition of this work, published about five years ago, I hoped that my experience as a practical physiologist and public teacher and the discipline of eleven years during which I was occupied in writing my large treatise in five volumes might enable me to make a book which would meet the wants of practitioners and students of medicine. My expectations in this regard have been more than fulfilled. My work has been very favorably received by the profession; it is extensively used as a text-book, and two very large impressions of the first edition and a second edition, published in 1879, have been exhausted. Encouraged by the favorable reception of the book, I have spared no pains in its revision for a third edition. I have rewritten certain portions, carefully corrected all the errors and inaccuracies that I have been able to discover, and have eliminated here and there statements that did not seem to me to be fully in accord with the existing state of physiological knowledge. In addition to minor corrections, I have made the following important alterations: I have adopted the views of Bowman, lately confirmed by the experiments of Heidenhain and others, with regard to the functions of the Malpighian bodies of the kidney. The section upon Animal Heat has been entirely rewritten and I have given an account of my new experiments upon this subject, published in 1879, showing the probable generation of heat in the body by the union of oxygen and hydrogen and the formation of water. I have introduced a short description of the cerebral convolutions, with a new diagram, and a brief account of the recent discovery by Boll, of retinal red. I have also added a diagram illustrating the mechanism of micturition, and a figure, kindly prepared for me by Dr. E. G. Loring, of New York, showing the appearance of the fundus of the eye as seen with the ophthalmoscope. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Physiology It is eminently desirable that the student should avail himself of every Opportunity of making his study thoroughly practical. The author therefore has given, here and there, many hints as to how he should proceed in easy dissections; and has introduced a number Of simple experiments, so that the knowledge gained may be Of a sound character. It is too often felt that such practical and experimental methods of acquiring information are roundabout and tedious; but the author's experience has taught him to affirm that it is the readiest, surest, and certainly the most pleasant way of attaining the end in view. In these cases, the eyes become of unequal power; so that one only can be employed where distinct vision is required. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Physiology: A Text-Book for High Schools and Colleges Those who are pursuing researches in the chemistry of living things are more and more definitely separated from those whose studies are physical. It is scarcely possible to be an authority in both subdivisions. Specialization constantly becomes more pronounced. For example, the subject of the electric phenomena which can be observed in living tissues is extensive enough by itself to engage the exclusive attention of many students. Methods in Physiology. - Somet_hing must now be said of the methods which physiologists employ. Evidently they must work upon living matter since their interest is in the reactions which are peculiar to it. It does not follow that they always make use of intact organisms for the living state may often be protracted for some time in portions of animals (or plants) detached from the body. Thus the muscles of a frog's leg can be preserved for hours after separation from the other systems and will behave in much the same way as if they were still united with them. This property of survival, which is so valuable to experimenters, is much more to be relied on in the so-called cold - blooded than in the warm-blooded animals. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text Book of Physiology, Vol. 4 The present Part IV. completes the work, with the exception of the Appendix, which differs so widely in character from the rest of the book that it seemed desirable to issue it separately; it will be published very shortly. Besides receiving assistance from the friends who have helped me in former Parts, I have in this Part had the advantage of the criticisms of my friends, Dr. W. S.
