Book Synopsis Human Language and Our Reptilian Brain by : Philip Lieberman
Download or read book Human Language and Our Reptilian Brain written by Philip Lieberman and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an entry into the fierce current debate among psycholinguists, neuroscientists, and evolutionary theorists about the nature and origins of human language. A prominent neuroscientist here takes up the Darwinian case, using data seldom considered by psycholinguists and neurolinguists to argue that human language--though more sophisticated than all other forms of animal communication--is not a qualitatively different ability from all forms of animal communication, does not require a quantum evolutionary leap to explain it, and is not unified in a single language instinct. Using clinical evidence from speech-impaired patients, functional neuroimaging, and evolutionary biology to make his case, Philip Lieberman contends that human language is not a single separate module but a functional neurological system made up of many separate abilities. Language remains as it began, Lieberman argues: a device for coping with the world. But in a blow to human narcissism, he makes the case that this most remarkable human ability is a by-product of our remote reptilian ancestors' abilities to dodge hazards, seize opportunities, and live to see another day.
Book Synopsis The Biology and Evolution of Language by : Philip Lieberman
Download or read book The Biology and Evolution of Language written by Philip Lieberman and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1984 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book synthesizes much of the exciting recent research in the biology of language. Drawing on data from anatomy, neurophysiology, physiology, and behavioral biology, Philip Lieberman develops a new approach to the puzzle of language, arguing that it is the result of many evolutionary compromises. Within his discussion, Lieberman skillfully addresses matters as various as the theory of neoteny (which he refutes), the mating calls of bullfrogs, ape language, dyslexia, and computer-implemented models of the brain.
Book Synopsis Toward an Evolutionary Biology of Language by : Philip Lieberman
Download or read book Toward an Evolutionary Biology of Language written by Philip Lieberman and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2006-06-30 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this forcefully argued book, the leading evolutionary theorist of language draws on evidence from evolutionary biology, genetics, physical anthropology, anatomy, and neuroscience, to provide a framework for studying the evolution of human language and cognition. Philip Lieberman argues forcibly that the widely influential theories of language's development, advanced by Chomskian linguists and cognitive scientists, especially those that postulate a single dedicated language "module," "organ," or "instinct," are inconsistent with principles and findings of evolutionary biology and neuroscience. He argues that the human neural system in its totality is the basis for the human language ability, for it requires the coordination of neural circuits that regulate motor control with memory and higher cognitive functions. Pointing out that articulate speech is a remarkably efficient means of conveying information, Lieberman also highlights the adaptive significance of the human tongue. Fully human language involves the species-specific anatomy of speech, together with the neural capacity for thought and movement. In Lieberman's iconoclastic Darwinian view, the human language ability is the confluence of a succession of separate evolutionary developments, jury-rigged by natural selection to work together for an evolutionarily unique ability.
Book Synopsis Uniquely Human by : Philip Lieberman
Download or read book Uniquely Human written by Philip Lieberman and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a stimulating synthesis of cognitive science, anthropology, and linguistics, Philip Lieberman tackles the fundamental questions of human nature: How and why are human beings so different from other species? Can the Darwinian theory of evolution explain human linguistic and cognitive ability? How do our processes of language and thought differ from those of Homo erectus 500,000 years ago, or of the Neanderthals 35,000 years ago? What accounts for human moral sense? Lieberman believes that evolution for rapid, efficient vocal communication forged modern human beings by creating the modern human brain. Earlier hominids lacked fully human speech and syntax, which together allow us to convey complex thoughts rapidly. The author discusses how natural selection acted on older brain mechanisms to produce a structure that can regulate the motor activity necessary for speech and command the complex syntax that enhances the creativity of human language. The unique brain mechanisms underlying human language also enhance human cognitive ability, allowing us to derive abstract concepts and to plan complex activities. These factors are necessary for the development of true altruism and moral behavior. Lieberman supports his argument about the evolution of speech and the human brain by combining the comparative method of Charles Darwin, insights from archaeology and child development, and the results of high-tech research with computerized brain scanning and computer models that can recreate speech sounds made by our ancestors over 100,000 years ago. Uniquely Human will stimulate fresh thought and controversy on the basic question of how we came to be.
Book Synopsis The Theory That Changed Everything by : Philip Lieberman
Download or read book The Theory That Changed Everything written by Philip Lieberman and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few people have done as much to change how we view the world as Charles Darwin. Yet On the Origin of Species is more cited than read, and parts of it are even considered outdated. In some ways, it has been consigned to the nineteenth century. In The Theory That Changed Everything, the renowned cognitive scientist Philip Lieberman demonstrates that there is no better guide to the world’s living—and still evolving—things than Darwin and that the phenomena he observed are still being explored at the frontiers of science. In an exploration that ranges from Darwin’s transformative trip aboard the Beagle to Lieberman’s own sojourns in the remotest regions of the Himalayas, this book relates fresh, contemporary findings to the major concepts of Darwinian theory, which transcends natural selection. Drawing on his own research into the evolution of human linguistic and cognitive abilities, Lieberman explains the paths that adapted human anatomy to language. He demystifies the role of recently identified transcriptional and epigenetic factors encoded in DNA, explaining how nineteenth-century Swedish famines alternating with years of plenty caused survivors’ grandchildren to die many years short of their life expectancy. Lieberman is equally at home decoding supermarket shelves and climbing with the Sherpas as he discusses how natural selection explains features from lactose tolerance to ease of breathing at Himalayan altitudes. With conversational clarity and memorable examples, Lieberman relates the insights that led to groundbreaking discoveries in both Darwin’s time and our own while asking provocative questions about what Darwin would have made of controversial issues today, such as GMOs, endangered species, and the God question.

Book Synopsis Language in Our Brain by : Angela D. Friederici
Download or read book Language in Our Brain written by Angela D. Friederici and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive account of the neurobiological basis of language, arguing that species-specific brain differences may be at the root of the human capacity for language. Language makes us human. It is an intrinsic part of us, although we seldom think about it. Language is also an extremely complex entity with subcomponents responsible for its phonological, syntactic, and semantic aspects. In this landmark work, Angela Friederici offers a comprehensive account of these subcomponents and how they are integrated. Tracing the neurobiological basis of language across brain regions in humans and other primate species, she argues that species-specific brain differences may be at the root of the human capacity for language. Friederici shows which brain regions support the different language processes and, more important, how these brain regions are connected structurally and functionally to make language processes that take place in milliseconds possible. She finds that one particular brain structure (a white matter dorsal tract), connecting syntax-relevant brain regions, is present only in the mature human brain and only weakly present in other primate brains. Is this the “missing link” that explains humans' capacity for language? Friederici describes the basic language functions and their brain basis; the language networks connecting different language-related brain regions; the brain basis of language acquisition during early childhood and when learning a second language, proposing a neurocognitive model of the ontogeny of language; and the evolution of language and underlying neural constraints. She finds that it is the information exchange between the relevant brain regions, supported by the white matter tract, that is the crucial factor in both language development and evolution.

Download or read book Serpent Brain written by John W. Lewis and published by . This book was released on 2009-09-01 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the ancient Reptile/Serpent Brain in humans and its transformation. The Serpent Brain (R-complex) is the oldest part of our brain where all of our primal instincts, carnality and fears originate. We seek to show how mostly all that we perceive as evil or negative stems from ancient programming in the reptile brain based in fear. However, through deprogramming and reprogramming the Serpent Brain we can live in what we consider the supernatural or Spirit at all time. Now to explain this: Every part of our body is a replica or physical manifestation of something that exists in the celestial realm. The good news of the Creator's purpose and plan is recorded throughout the human anatomy and DNA. We are awesomely and wonderfully created in the image and likeness of the Creator; although we don't yet fully express that reality. Nevertheless, we do have a hope and promise that we will be completely restored to Edenic Consciousness to totally operate out of the Mind of Christ at all times. At which point even the members of our being that are considered most low and primal will express the full glory of our God. In this book we challenge you to look at issues, perceptions, lifestyles, behaviors, religious ideas, political propaganda and hidden fears. We will not only look at them but possibly change some and come to realize the power of love that dissolves all fears. Lastly, we will show you the hidden metaphors in Scripture that hinted at the transformation of the Serpent Brain/Carnal Mind, the Pineal & Pituitary Glands. We also set this forth in mystical poetry throughout the book. "Bless the LORD O' my soul and all that is within me bless His holy name." Psalms 103:1 KJV The physical and material world only reflects that of the invisible or spiritual realm. In the spirit realm the Seraph is the spiritual counterpart of our physical Serpent (reptile) Brain and brain stem. The metaphysical primal Serpent Brain will be transformed to be like unto the Seraph within mankind. The Seraphim are the mysterious highest celestial Angelic Order of Fiery Flying Serpentine creatures closest to the throne of God. According to Scripture, they cry; holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is filled with His glory. Isaiah 6:1-3 All of creation earnestly waits and groans with expectation for humans to once again fully operate out of whole brain synchronicity as in Eden. At which point we will manifest as sons and daughters of Elohim and the whole earth of our being will express his glory. This book, and all that seek the Light are dedicated to the complete transformation of the human mind and choosing to live in Love.
Book Synopsis Why Humans Like to Cry by : Michael Trimble
Download or read book Why Humans Like to Cry written by Michael Trimble and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-08-08 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humans are unique in shedding tears of sorrow. We do not just cry over our own problems: we seek out sad stories, go to film and the theatre to see Tragedies, and weep in response to music. What led humans to develop such a powerful social signal as tears, and to cultivate great forms of art which have the capacity to arouse us emotionally? Friedrich Nietzsche argued that Dionysian drives and music were essential to the development of Tragedy. Here, the neuropsychiatrist Michael Trimble, using insights from modern neuroscience and evolutionary biology, attempts to understand this fascinating and unique aspect of human nature--Book jacket.
Book Synopsis A Brain for Speech by : Francisco Aboitiz
Download or read book A Brain for Speech written by Francisco Aboitiz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses evolution of the human brain, the origin of speech and language. It covers past and present perspectives on the contentious issue of the acquisition of the language capacity. Divided into two parts, this insightful work covers several characteristics of the human brain including the language-specific network, the size of the human brain, its lateralization of functions and interhemispheric integration, in particular the phonological loop. Aboitiz argues that it is the phonological loop that allowed us to increase our vocal memory capacity and to generate a shared semantic space that gave rise to modern language. The second part examines the neuroanatomy of the monkey brain, vocal learning birds like parrots, emergent evidence of vocal learning capacities in mammals, mirror neurons, and the ecological and social context in which speech evolved in our early ancestors. This book's interdisciplinary topic will appeal to scholars of psychology, neuroscience, linguistics, biology and history.
Download or read book Big Brain written by Gary Lynch and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2008-03-04 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our big brains, our language ability, and our intelligence make us uniquely human. But barely 10,000 years ago (a mere blip in evolutionary time) human-like creatures called "Boskops" flourished in South Africa. They possessed extraordinary features: forebrains roughly 50% larger than ours, and estimated IQs to match--far surpassing our own. Many of these huge fossil skulls have been discovered over the last century, but most of us have never heard of this scientific marvel. Prominent neuroscientists Gary Lynch and Richard Granger compare the contents of the Boskop brain and our own brains today, and arrive at startling conclusions about our intelligence and creativity. Connecting cutting-edge theories of genetics, evolution, language, memory, learning, and intelligence, Lynch and Granger show the implications of large brains for a broad array of fields, from the current state of the art in Alzheimer's and other brain disorders, to new advances in brain-based robots that see and converse with us, and the means by which neural prosthetics-- replacement parts for the brain--are being designed and tested. The authors demystify the complexities of our brains in this fascinating and accessible book, and give us tantalizing insights into our humanity--its past, and its future.
