Mitigating the severity of the ROR events is an on-going research goal in order to help reduce the number of ROR crashes. Examining countermeasures that may reduce ROR crashes is important to determine the most efficient and effective method of warning. Behavioral responses were examined through the use of an in-vehicle haptic-based lane departure warning system (LDWS) using a driving simulator. The study incorporated systematic variation to both the reliability of the warning and sequence of treatment conditions. An additional analysis examined the presence of behavioral adaptation after repeated exposure to the system. Severity of a ROR event was measured as the total time out of lane (TTL) and maximum lane deviation (MLD). Covariates (e.g. road shape) were examined to determine the influence they may have on the severity of a ROR. The results reveal overall LDWS efficacy. TTL was significantly longer when no system was active compared to when it was active. LDWS led to shorter duration of ROR events. Greater velocity was found to be highly predictive of longer TTL. MLD was also greater for baseline drives compared to treatment drives. No behavioral adaptation or system overreliance was detected, suggesting long term benefits of the LDWS. Drivers who actively engaged in a distraction task were at far greater risk of traveling greater and more dangerous distances out of lane.

Lane departures can be either intentional (e.g., to pass another vehicle or avoid an object in the roadway) or unintentional (due to drowsiness, inattention or distraction). The report discusses the recent research and applications literature that evaluates the problem of lane departure accidents and the potential for LDWS to reduce the frequency and/or severity of those accidents. The report also discusses the issues related to the use of LDWS data that are recorded to improve the fleet and individual driver safety performance. The value of systems that range from simply warning the driver, with no even recorded, to the transmission of an event with the possibility of real-time intervention if driver performance is perceived to be degraded (e.g., due to fatigue or drowsiness). The study addresses the resources necessary to effectively integrate the information from these systems into the driver management system toward the goal of facilitating safe driving behaviors and reducing costly accidents. Truck accident data were analyzed to further evaluate the potential for safety benefits from LDWS. The Large Truck Crash Causation Study (LTCCS) data were analyzed with respect to the types of crashes that could be affected by LDWS (e.g., departed roadway, inattention, etc.). The analysis focused on rural highways and interstates with posted speed limits of above 50 mph. In addition, safety data for eight large commercial trucking fleets were analyzed to determine the relative frequency of accidents for which LDWS would reduce the occurrence or severity of lane or roadway departure accidents. The results indicated that, although the frequency of lane departure and run-off-road accidents was found to be relatively low, the consequences of these crashes can be very high. In addition, the relative frequency of lane departure accidents varied greatly from fleet to fleet. This indicates that the decision to implement LDWS or what type of LDWS to implement must depend upon a fleet's own experience, rather than aggregate data.

Book excerpt: The IVBSS program is a four-year, two-phase project to design and evaluate an integrated crash warning system for forward collision, lateral drift, lane-change merge, and curve speed warnings for both light vehicles and heavy trucks. This report, covering human factors research and DVI development in the first two years of the program, describes five laboratory studies, four driving simulator studies, and two onroad pilot tests conducted to assess a variety of river-interface concepts related to the development of integrated warning systems. Selected major findings are as follows: 1) For the vehicles selected, warning sounds should be at least 80 dB(A) in the 1 to 5 KHz range. 2) Auditory warning durations should be less than the expected mean response time. 3) No approaches to warning combination (single, dual-simple, dual-hybrid, or multiple warnings) led to noticeably better driver responses, though drivers favored the multiple warning approach least, and for a variety of reasons a dual-warning approach is recommended for IVBSS. 4) Delays between 150 and 300 ms are acceptable for the LDW algorithm. 5) No single prioritization scheme for warnings (simultaneous, priority interrupt, or delayed presentation) is recommended based on the findings from a simulator study.Extended pilot testing is likely to suggest minor refinements to the DVIs developed here. In the pilot tests that have been conducted, all of the warning systems operated as planned, with some changes required to reduce false alarm rates. Overall, drivers reported IVBSS to be intuitive and easy to use. Most drivers stated warnings were received with about the right frequency, and in general the warnings were not distracting. Results from the laboratory and simulator experiments, in particular, are likely to assist future developers of driver-vehicle interfaces for integrated crash warning systems.

Book excerpt: With the rapid improvement of the Advanced Driver Assistant System (ADAS), autonomous driving has become one of the most common hot topics in recent years. While driving, many technologies related to autonomous driving choose to use the sensors installed on the vehicle to collect the information of road status and the environment outside. This aims to warn the driver to perceive the potential danger in the fastest time, which has become the focus of autonomous driving in recent years. Although autonomous driving brings plenty of conveniences to people, the safety of it is still facing difficulties. During driving, even the experienced driver can not guarantee focus on the status of the road all the time. Thus, lane departure warning system (LDWS) becomes developed. The purpose of LDWS is to determine whether the vehicle is in the safe driving area. If the vehicle is out of this area, LDWS will detect it and alert the driver by the sensors, such as sound and vibration, in order to make the driver back to the safe driving area. This thesis proposes a novel lightweight LDWS model LEHA, which divides the entire LDWS into three stages: image preprocessing, lane detection, and lane departure recognition. Different from the deep learning methods of LDWS, our LDWS model LEHA can achieve high accuracy and efficiency by relying only on simple hardware. The image preprocessing stage aims to process the original road image to remove the noise which is irrelevant to the detection result. In this stage, we apply a novel algorithm of grayscale preprocessing to convert the road image to a grayscale image, which removes the color of it. Then, we design a binarization method to greatly extract the lane lines from the background. A newly-designed image smoothing is added to this stage to reduce most of the noise, which improves the accuracy of the following lane detection stage. After obtaining the processed image, the lane detection stage is applied to detect and mark the lane lines. We use region of interest (ROI) to remove the irrelevant parts of the road image to reduce the detection time. After that, we introduce the Canny edge detection method, which aims to extract the edges of the lane lines. The last step of LDWS in the lane detection stage is a novel Hough transform method, the purpose of it is to detect the position of the lane and mark it. Finally, the lane departure recognition stage is used to calculate the deviation distance between the vehicle and the centerline of the lane to determine whether the warning needs to turn on. In the last part of this paper, we present the experiment results which show the comparison results of different lane conditions. We do the statistic of the proposed LDWS accuracy in terms of detection and departure. The detection rate of our proposed LDWS is 98.2% and the departure rate of it is 99.1%. The average processing time of our proposed LDWS is 20.01 x 10−3s per image.
