Book excerpt: In the years since its first publication, O'Rahilly and Muller's Human Embryology and Teratology has been widely praised as an exceptional reference on normal and abnormal human prenatal development. This revised and expanded Third Edition offers more in-depth coverage of the central topics in human embryology and incorporates the latest data from ongoing embryological investigations. Authored by two of the world's foremost authorities on the human embryo, this new edition provides a comprehensive overview of general and systemic development, referring throughout to the internationally accepted Carnegie system of embryonic staging. Extensively illustrated, the book features nearly 400 figures, including detailed, color-enhanced line drawings that clarify the developmental processes of every major organ and system. Useful recommendations for additional reading are listed at the end of each chapter. The Third Edition has been thoroughly revised and updated to include: * Elaboration of the nervous system to conform to the second edition of the authors' The Embryonic Human Brain * Reorganization of the chapters on the heart and eye, and clarification of the liver, vertebrae, and neuroteratology * Expanded tables explaining the initial appearance of features in each body system * Further indications of precise embryonic stages * 35 new drawings and 27 new photomicrographs in color * Numerous new references * Updated terminology, standardized according to the accepted usage The undisputed authority on human embryology and embryonic abnormalities, Human Embryology and Teratology, Third Edition belongs in the library of every physician, biologist, student, and research scientist whose research is concerned with human anatomical development. Its authoritative, concise, and thoroughly illustrated presentation also makes it an ideal reference for practitioners in all medical and surgical subspecialties.

Book excerpt: The aim and scope of this book is to review current information on human development and processes of differentiation that have benefited from breakthrough analyses in stem cell biology, elucidation of genome and gene architecture and aspects of regulation of gene expression, analysis of signaling systems and transcription factor actions. Insights into actions of specific genes and their roles in development have been gathered through studies in patients with specific birth defects, including congenital malformations, metabolic defects and functional impairments. The book is organized into three sections, the first dealing with aspects of genomics, gene structure and regulation, analysis of signaling and function of specific organelles. The second section deals with molecular aspects of development of specific organs and structures such as, bone, face, brain, heart, liver, pancreas, kidney. The last section deals with specific malformations and tumors that provide insight into regulation of growth. Environmental factors that impact growth and development are also covered. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the fifteen years since the thalidomide disaster teratology has become a science in its own right, distinct from its progenitors, experimental embryology and develop mental biology, but bearing many of the familiar features of both parents. In this growth period there have been contributions from many different scientific disciplines as diverse as molecular biology and obstetrics, which have united in the field of study of congenital malformations. Scientists in academic departments, government research institutes and industrial pharmacology have all explored ways of evaluating the potential of drugs and chem icals to damage the embryo; strict methods of screening for teratogenicity have be come mandatory in most parts of the world. Despite a wealth of basic information in the fields of genetics and embryology, there is little concrete knowledge of the causal mechanisms of malformation in Man, and even less concerning the relevance to Man of those laboratory and animal tests which decide the fate of potentially useful drugs. It is timely, therefore, that in 1975 a group of young and active sci entists and clinicians concerned with the broader implications of teratology should review the past and look to the future of this emerging speciality. In this volume the editors have blended the opinions of teratologists; their message presages change in many of the old and accepted areas of investigative teratology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teratology is at once among the oldest and youngest of human preoccupations. Coincident with man's first observations of the stars were his recordings of human and animal deformities. But, such aberrancies must have occurred even earlier, for although it is one of those things-like evolution-that cannot be proven, it is nevertheless indisputable that dysmorphogenesis must have occurred from the time complex forms of life first arose on our planet; and that from the beginnings of human awareness our species was conscious of such happenings. From the earliest recordings of this fascination with the form and meaning of abnormality a tortuous but continuous line extends to modern struggles to understand and control these manifestations. And now, after long occupying an honorable but peripheral place in the halls of philosophical and scientific pursuits, teratology has quite suddenly come to take a prominent position at the hub of a complex crossroads of human concerns. This shift in its fortune has taken several forms. Fetal maldevelopment has become the concern of environmentalists, activists of various persuasions, indus trial organizations, government agencies, ethicists, parents-i. e. , individuals and groups whose actions are impelled by apprehension. Such motives are of course not without basis; the trauma of thalidomide left a scar yet raw. For still others clinicians, academics, experimentalists-the upsurge in the interest in fetal mal development is at a different level, and their pursuits are broad, taking external agents as but one of the causes of defective development.
