American Reform Judaism is an authentic expression of Jewish tradition, both in theology and in religious-cum-ethical practice. Reform Judaism's openness to change and its concern with the lives and dignity of contemporary Jews is characteristic of the tradition. The views about conversion that predominated from 500 CE to the present were to welcome the proselyte, minimize the importance of motivation, and ignore future lifestyle as considerations for conversion. I review current thought on cultural value-the conscious, the unconscious, and methods to modify behavior-in order to help those who wish to understand and possibly to change contemporary views concerning conversion and converts. I have written in a style intended to be accessible and engaging to all Jews-whether familiar or unfamiliar with the subjects considered. In choosing historical, theological, psychological, anthropological, and sociological frames of reference, I have sought to contribute to the understanding of the intersection in Judaism of the metavalue of human dignity and the treatment of converts.
