Book excerpt: Huma Rising is the inspirational true-story of one man's journey from bankruptcy to billionaire back to aspiring entrepreneur within the same industry that gave birth to his amazing financial prominence, the legal cannabis industry. The book spans three decades and gives an intimate portrayal of personal loss, sacrifice, success, betrayal, and rebirth. In keeping with the theme of "rebirth," the book is appropriately titled "Huma Rising." The huma is a legendary phoenix-like bird within Persian mythology, consuming itself in fire every few hundred years, only to rise anew from the ashes. The creature is often referred to as a bird of paradise. It is considered compassionate. It is also called a bird of fortune, since its shadow (or touch) is said to be auspicious-if it falls on a person's head or shoulder, it bestows or foretells kingship. Accordingly, the feathers decorating the turbans of ancient kings were said to be huma-bird plumage. All sales proceeds of this book are being equally distributed to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Operation Smile, ASPCA, and Sierra Club Foundation.

Book excerpt: A New York Times bestseller, this extraordinary memoir from Huma Abedin—Hillary Clinton’s famously private top aide and longtime advisor—offers “a gripping testament to the power of a woman finding her voice, owning her ambition, and sharing her truth” (Glennon Doyle). Abedin’s stunning memoir garnered an extraordinary amount of media coverage, with appearances on CBS Sunday Morning, the Today show, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, The View, Late Night with Seth Meyers, Christiane Amanpour, and coverage in many other outlets, including The Washington Post, The New York Times, and NPR. The daughter of Indian and Pakistani intellectuals and advocates, Abedin grew up in the United States and Saudi Arabia and traveled widely. Both/And grapples with family, legacy, identity, faith, marriage, motherhood—and work—with wisdom, sophistication, grace, and clarity. Abedin launched full steam into a college internship in the office of the First Lady in 1996, never imagining that her work at the White House would blossom into a career in public service, nor that her career would become an all-consuming way of life. She thrived in rooms with diplomats and sovereigns, entrepreneurs and artists, philanthropists and activists, and witnessed many crucial moments in 21st-century American history—Camp David for urgent efforts at Middle East peace in the waning months of the Clinton administration, Ground Zero in the days after the September 11 attacks, the inauguration of the first African American president of the United States, and the convention floor when America nominated its first female presidential candidate. Abedin’s relationship with Hillary Clinton has seen both women through extraordinary personal and professional highs, as well as unimaginable lows. Here, for the first time, is a deeply personal account of Clinton as mentor, confidante, and role model. Abedin cuts through caricature, rumor, and misinformation to reveal a crystal-clear portrait of Clinton as a brilliant and caring leader, a steadfast friend, generous, funny, hardworking, and dedicated. Both/And is “the story of a person of substance—someone determined to tell her own story” (The New York Times) including the heartbreaking chronicle of her marriage to Anthony Weiner, what drew her to him, how much she wanted to believe in him, the devastation wrought by his betrayals—and their shared love for their son. Abedin’s journey through the opportunities and obstacles, the trials and triumphs, of a full and complex life is a testament to her profound belief that in an increasingly either/or world, she can be both/and. Abedin’s compassion and courage, her resilience and grace, her work ethic and mission are an inspiration to women of all ages.

Book excerpt: The highly anticipated, mind-blowing New York Times bestselling sequel to Kiersten White’s New York Times bestseller, AND I DARKEN—the series that reads like HBO’s Game of Thrones . . . if it were set in the Ottoman Empire. A SISTER FILLED WITH RAGE Lada Dracul has no allies. No crown. All she has is what she’s always had: herself. After failing to secure the Wallachian throne, Lada is out to punish anyone who dares cross her. She storms the countryside with her men, but brute force isn’t getting Lada what she wants. And thinking of Mehmed, the defiant Ottoman sultan, brings little comfort to her thorny heart. There’s no time to wonder whether he still thinks about her, even loves her. She left him before he could leave her. HER BROTHER CAUGHT IN THE CROSSHAIRS Lada needs the support of her diplomatic younger brother, Radu. But Mehmed has sent him to Constantinople—and it’s no diplomatic mission. Mehmed wants control of the city, and Radu has earned an unwanted place as a double-crossing spy behind enemy lines. And for the first time in his life, when Lada asks him for help, he refuses . . . leading his sister to make the darkest of choices. THE ULTIMATE POWER PLAY Torn between loyalties to faith, to the Ottomans, and to Mehmed, Radu knows he owes Lada nothing. If she dies, he could never forgive himself—but if he fails in Constantinople, would Mehmed ever forgive him? As nations fall around them, the Dracul siblings must decide: what will they sacrifice to fulfill their destinies? Empires will topple, thrones will be won . . . and souls will be lost. Fans of Victoria Aveyard’s THE RED QUEEN and Sabaa Tahir’s A TORCH AGAINST THE NIGHT won’t want to miss this riveting and gorgeously written novel—the second in the And I Darken series. ★ "Gorgeous, rich, and rewarding."—Booklist, starred review ★ "Absolutely devastating in the best way."—Kirkus, starred review “A+, 5 knives.”—Amie Kaufman, New York Times bestselling co-author of the STARBOUND and ILLUMINAE FILES trilogies “Fierce, epic, and crazy fun.”—Melissa Albert, New York Times bestselling author of THE HAZEL WOOD A Teen Choice Book Award nominee! Book excerpt: This ebundle includes: The Collapsing Empire, The Consuming Fire, and The Last Emperox. “The Flow” — the naturally-occurring highway humans use to travel between the stars — is breaking down. It’s up to a starship owner, a scientist, and the Emperox of the Interdependency to race against the clock in order to salvage political control over the remaining connected human colonies. Snappy dialogue, dynamic action sequences, and political skullduggery — The Interdependency sequence is a galaxy-spanning science fiction adventure for the ages. The Collapsing Empire: Faster than light travel is impossible—until the discovery of The Flow, an extradimensional field available at certain points in space-time, which can take us to other planets around other stars. Riding The Flow, humanity spreads to innumerable other worlds. Earth is forgotten. A new empire arises, the Interdependency, based on the doctrine that no one human outpost can survive without the others. The Flow is eternal—but it’s not static. When it’s discovered that the entire Flow is moving, possibly separating all human worlds from one another forever, three individuals—a scientist, a starship captain, and the emperox of the Interdependency—must race against time to discover what, if anything, can be salvaged from an interstellar empire on the brink of collapse. The Consuming Fire: The Interdependency is on the verge of collapse. Emperox Grayland II of the Interdependency is ready to take desperate measures to help ensure the survival of billions. While Grayland prepares for disaster, others are preparing for a civil war. The Emperox and her allies are smart and resourceful, as are her enemies. Nothing about this will be easy... and all of humanity will be caught in its consuming fire. The Last Emperox: Emperox Grayland II has finally wrested control of her empire from those who oppose her. But “control” is a slippery thing, and even as Grayland strives to save as many of her people from impoverished isolation, the forces opposing her rule will make a final, desperate push to topple her from her throne and power, by any means necessary. Grayland and her thinning list of allies must use every tool at their disposal to save themselves, and all of humanity. And yet it may not be enough. Will Grayland become the savior of her civilization . . . or the last emperox to wear the crown? Book excerpt: In Terracene Salar Mameni historicizes the popularization of the scientific notion of the Anthropocene alongside the emergence of the global war on terror. Mameni theorizes the Terracene as an epoch marked by a convergence of racialized militarism and environmental destruction. Both the Anthropocene and the war on terror centered the antagonist figures of the Anthropos and the terrorist as responsible for epochal changes in the new geological and geopolitical world orders. In response, Mameni shows how the Terracene requires radically new engagements with terra (the earth), whose intelligence resides in matters such as oil and phenomena like earthquakes and fires. Drawing on the work of artists whose practices interrogate histories of settler-colonial and imperial interests in land and resources in Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Kuwait, Syria, Palestine, and other regions most affected by the war on terror, Mameni offers speculative paths into the aesthetics of the Terracene.

Book excerpt: A courageous heroine trapped in the distant past is determined to return to her own time—without changing the shape of the world forever—as the New York Times bestselling Dragonlance series continues in this thrilling sequel to Dragons of Deceit. A clash of powerful magical forces sets off the Graygem of Gargath, sending Destina Rosethorn and her companions deeper into the past than she intended—to the age of Huma Dragonsbane and the Third Dragon War. Now, with the Device of Time Journeying shattered, they must find another way back to their own era before the Graygem irrevocably alters history and the Third Dragon War ends in defeat for the forces of good. While the battle rages on, Destina tries desperately to make amends and prevent disaster. Raistlin and Sturm encounter their heroes Huma and Magius, and must reconcile the myths with the men. And Tasslehoff, shocked that the Knights of Solamnia have never heard of dragonlances, sets out to find the famed weapons. But as the forces of the Dark Queen close in on the High Clerist’s Tower, Destina’s party must return to their own timeline together—or not at all.

Book excerpt: The Bombay Marines are the East India Company's private fighting ships, defending India's coast and naval trading routes. Captain Adam Horne is the commander of history's first naval commandos and a hero in the mould of Hornblower, Alexander Kent's Bolitho or Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey and Maturin. In this second part of the Adam Horne trilogy, follows The Bombay Marines which 'Lloyd's List' described as "everything a good yarn should have", the dare-devil Captain Horne, leader of history's first commando-style unit, is re-united with his motley but loyal band of ex-convict fighters. Commodore Watson gives Horne his new orders with great reluctance, feeling deep down that he is sending the captain and his crew to certain death. Horne sails to Madagascar on a mission of such danger and daring that no one in London, where the plan has been evolved, believes that it can succeed. With the war against the French at stalemate, the British Chiefs of Staff are looking for an unofficial means to reactivate the conflict in India and drive the French from the subcontinent forever. Who better to use than a band of expendable cut-throats, the East India Company's Bombay Marines? Porter Hill recreates the atmosphere of eighteenth-century life at sea with all the drama of a battle that takes desperate men to the limits of their endurance. The War Chest is a cliff-hanging saga of wind and wave, cunning and bravery, set in the dangerous, pirate-infested waters around India, Britain's "jewel in the crown".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book The Good Listener is a bold, new, fiction book about a plan among the animal leaders of the world, who meet at a barn in Los Angeles and develop a plan to end to the world-wide destruction and suffering caused by human beings: the animals have realized that the devastation is almost irreversible and that the animals have one last chance to stop the humans before a mass extinction of the animal kingdom begins. The animals agree to infect a young couple with a special seed obtained from the tar pits, secretly creating a hybrid-child, The Good Listener, a human baby with certain plant and animal characteristics which help the child communicate with every living thing on the earth. While The Good Listener has no eyes, ears, mouth, nor nostrils, it can breathe, see, and hear through its green skin, and is neither male nor female. Insects, birds and animals all come to see the wonderous child, while grasses, trees and plants bloom as the child walks past. The animals hope that The Good Listener will convince the people of the world that they must change their ways before the humans are left in a world with no plants or animals, but the government seizes the child for evaluation after it is seen in public. With The Good Listener’s help, the animals of the sea create a tsunami, attacking Los Angeles; and while the predators of the land attack humans in the city, the rest of the animals flee to the high mountains beginning a new life away from humans. At the same time, the plants release a new type of pollen, which is nutritious to birds and insects, but is flammable, and is also noxious and toxic to humans. To save themselves, the humans must develop a plan respecting, accommodating and incorporating all of the plants, insects, fish and animals of the world, or the humans will become extinct instead of the plants or the animals. The book is an adventure story comprised of numerous animals, several humans and the hybrid-child. The book contains a pre-quill embedded within the storyline, as well as an open-end, allowing a sequel. In addition, several of the animal characters have such unique personalities allowing the development of one or more independent prequel storylines. Alan, the king of the ants and Frank, the lord of the flies, are central figures in the book and likely deserve their own background stories. Finally, the main character, the hybrid-child, is unique and fascinating, creating a never-before seen opportunity to develop a multi-book line of sequels.
