Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The career of General Hugh Stockwell culminated in the ill-fated Suez Operation of 1956 but no stigma can attach to him for this. It was a military success but a political nightmare which resulted in the fall of Prime Minister Eden, the lowest point in relations between the Western allies, the departure of France from the NATO military structure and the huge loss of British national confidence. Stockwells career up to that point had been exemplary. Although commissioned into the Welch Fusiliers he had fought in Norway 1940, commanded the Special Training Centre at Lochailort and 2nd battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers in 29 Independent Brigade during the successful invasion of Madagascar in 1942. He was a brigade and divisional commander in Burma and commander of 6 Airborne Division in Palestine before becoming Commander Land Forces during the Malayan Emergency under Templer. After the Suez debacle he went on to be Adjutant General and Deputy SACEUR during the height of the Cold War (Cuban missile crisis and erection of Berlin Wall). This is a timely biography of a soldier who was at the heart of the action during the Second World War and the turbulent post-war years

Devastated, she approached Green's son, Christopher, in an effort to unravel the mystery behind her two 'fathers'. Hughie Green was a huge showbiz figure and probably the first star of British TV. His show, Opportunity Knocks, launched the career of Les Dawson and many others. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wilde's works are suffused with his aestheticism, brilliant craftsmanship, legendary wit and, ultimately, his tragic muse. He wrote tender fairy stories for children employing all his grace, artistry and wit, of which the best-known is The Happy Prince. Counterpoints to this were his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, which shocked and outraged many readers of his day, and his stories for adults which exhibited his fascination with the relations between serene art and decadent life. Wilde took London by storm with his plays, particularly his masterpiece The Importance of Being Earnest. His essays - in particular De Profundis- and his Ballad of Reading Gaol, both written after his release from prison, strikingly break the bounds of his usual expressive range. His other essays and poems are all included in this comprehensive collection of the works of one of the most exciting writers of the late nineteenth century.
