Book excerpt: Two White House Social Secretaries offer “an essential guide for getting along and getting ahead in our world today…by treating others with civility and respect. Full of life lessons that are both timely and timeless, this is a book that will be devoured, bookmarked, and read over and over again” (John McCain, United States Senator). Former White House social secretaries Lea Berman, who worked for Laura and George Bush, and Jeremy Bernard, who worked for Michelle and Barack Obama, have learned valuable lessons about how to work with people from different walks of life. In Treating People Well, they share tips and advice from their own moments with celebrities, foreign leaders, and that most unpredictable of animals—the American politician. Valuable “guidance for finding success in both personal and professional relationships and navigating social settings with grace” (BookPage), this is not a book about old school etiquette. Berman and Bernard explain the things we all want to know, like how to walk into a roomful of strangers and make friends, what to do about a colleague who makes you dread work each day, and how to navigate the sometimes-treacherous waters of social media. Weaving “practical guidance into entertaining behind-the-scenes moments…their unique and rewarding insider’s view” (Publishers Weekly) provides tantalizing insights into the character of the first ladies and presidents they served, proving that social skills are learned behavior that anyone can acquire. Ultimately, “this warm and gracious little book treats readers well, entertaining them with stories of close calls, ruffled feathers, and comic misunderstandings as the White House each day attempts to carry through its social life” (The Wall Street Journal).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How Nashville Became Music City, U.S.A. was first published in 2006 and quickly became the go-to reference for those seeking to understand the Nashville music industry, or write about it. Now, Michael Kosser, prolific songwriter and author, returns with an updated and expanded edition, bringing the history of Music Row up to the present, since so much has changed over the last fifteen years. This new edition of How Nashville Became Music City, U.S.A. details the history of the Nashville song and recording industry from the founding of its first serious commercial music publishing company in 1942 to the present. Kosser tells the history of Music Row primarily through the voices of those who made and continue to make that history, including record executives, producers, singers, publishers, songwriters, studio musicians, studio engineers, record promoters, and others responsible for the music and the business, including the ambitious music executives who struggle to find an audience who will buy country records instead of just listening to them on the radio. The result is a book with insight far beyond the usual media stories, with plenty of emotion, humor, and historical accuracy. Kosser traces the growth and cultural changes of Nashville and the adventurous souls who fly to it to be a part of the music. He follows the changes from its hillbilly roots through its “Nashville Sound” quasi-pop days, from the outlaws, the new traditionalists, and the mega-sellers to the recent bro country and the rise of mini-trends. This edition also bears witness to the huge influence of Music Row on pop, folk, rock, and other American music genres.

Book excerpt: This is the third volume in Checker Book Publishing's comprehensive reprinting of the early cartoons and illustrations of Winsor McCay. Many of the works published here are seeing print for the first time since their original publication early in the previous century. The 1907 installments of "Dream of the Rarebit Fiend," perhaps McCay's best known work other than "Little Nemo in Slumberland," are included here, as is an assortment of his editorial cartoons and spot illustrations during his earlier days in New York. It also presents chapter-length reprintings of the strips "Little Sammy Sneeze," and "A Pilgrim's Progress." McCay's pioneering manipulations of the comic art form in its infancy, combined with his often unorthodox and humorours subject matter (including a fascination with dreams and nightmares) earned him extreme popularity during his lifetime and an enduring influence on subsequent generations of cartoonists, illustrators and animators. Note: The reader may encounter in this volume a number of images which do not meet modern Western standards for racial and ethnic sensitivity. In the interests of completeness and intellectual honesty regarding McCay's career, such images are included unedited. Book jacket.

But you might find this proud Texan a little more humble these days thanks to his troublesome client Corbel Pendergrat and a case that has more frustrating twists and turns for the detective than a Texas tornado. In no time at all, Kelley finds himself investigating a death, embezzlement, kidnapping, missing person, and cattle rustling. Yes, I said cattle rustling. Thanks to long kept secrets by his client, he cannot involve the police. Throw into the mix meaty thuggish bodyguards, illegal border busters, a spoiled heir, a femme fatale and her husband, the criminal empire boss, and you have more than one man can handle alone. Lucky for our detective, he doesn't have to. In trying to solve all these crimes, Kelley enlists the help of his best friend, private detective and former Marine Corps buddy Jackson Cartwright. He also has the love and support from his very large Irish Catholic family. Finally, if Robert Kelley's current situation isn't confusing enough, he finds his heart suddenly entangled with the likes of the stunning Lydia Rico. This story of intrigue takes place smack-dab in the heart of the Lone Star State, in the Dallas""Fort Worth Metroplex. Those familiar with this little piece of heaven on earth will relate to the many local and even historic landmarks, places, and people. Those who are not get to take a voyage of discovery to Texas. For the ignorant among you who haven't figured it out after reading all of the above, that if you don't take the time out of your busy schedules to find out what happens to our Cowtown detective, then you're just simply missing out!

Book excerpt: A riveting inside look at the lucrative world of professional high-stakes sports betting by a journalist who lived a secret life as a key operative in the world's most successful sports gambling ring. When journalist Michael Konik landed an interview with Rick "Big Daddy" Matthews, the largest bet he'd placed on a sporting event was $200. Konik, an expert blackjack and poker player, was no stranger to Vegas. But Matthews was in a different league: the man was rumored to be the world's smartest sports bettor, the mastermind behind "the Brain Trust," a shadowy group of gamblers known for their expertise in beating the Vegas line. Konik had heard the word on the street -- that Matthews was a snake, a conniver who would do anything to gain an edge. But he was also brilliant, cunning, and charming. And when he asked Konik if he'd like to "make a little money" during the football season, the writer found himself seduced . . . So began Michael Konik's wild ride as an operative of the elite Brain Trust. In The Smart Money, Konik takes readers behind the veil of secrecy shrouding the most successful sports betting operation in America, bypassing the myths and the rumors, going all the way to its innermost sanctum. He reveals how they -- and he -- got rich by beating the Vegas lines and, ultimately, the multimillion-dollar offshore betting circuit. He details the excesses and the betrayals, the horse-trading and the paranoia, that are the perks and perils of a lifestyle in which staking inordinate sums of money on the outcome of a single event -- sometimes as much as $1 million on a football game -- is a normal part of doing business.

"We Become What We Think About." - Earl Nightingale 3. Then, decide that it's true. Now, the rest of your life, you'll be testing this for yourself. You may be asking questions like these: - Can you actually change what you think about? - Do positive thoughts create a positive personal environment? - By being critical of anything or anyone around you actually improve conditions? - Is your health affected by negative thinking? You'll find continuing instances of how this is true and how it might not be. You'll be "haunted" by this singular thought, although the results will help you awake with fresh inspirations about how to live your life even better than you are now. In this second part, Nightingale's philosophy is further revealed, based on notes from key recordings. As Earl Nightingale once said: "Start today. You have nothing to lose - but you have your whole life to win."

Book excerpt: BOOK DESCRIPTION On 9/11/2001 America declared itself at war with International terrorism. As of this date, this war continues with no end in sight. The controversial war in Iraq rages on to this day not a war with organized opposing armies but one of the might of the united States military and its coalition partners against an undisciplined, motivated army of insurgents waging a guerrilla war. These insurgents and the foreign fighters that make up their number have only one objective in mind and that is to kill the occupying forces and innocent Iraqis in a vicious, sectarian struggle and they don’t mind dying to accomplish this task. This book, for the most part, is concerned with the other facet of the war and that is the one against Al Queda and its evil masters who plan world domination in a world wide caliphate with its capital in Baghdad. It is the intelligence networks with their field operatives who oppose the terrorists in every Western democratic country who hunt their enemy down based on information gleaned from many sources. Among the many dedicated agents from the United States, Britain, France and Germany there is a special international force which has been named VIPER and is funded and manned by all of the above nations. In the story, the headquarters for this unit is in Miami, Florida. Viper goes much further in combating terrorism. It takes the war to the enemy and most of the time, negates the necessity of bringing these enemies of mankind to trial by eliminating them where they find them. Some of their people are in deep cover, working covertly with the terrorists until the opportunity comes to subdue them, others are waiting for an assignment and still others are scanning computer screens gleaning intelligence to be passed on for interpretation. The Viper unit has its successes and it inevitably has its failures but the terrorists have learned that they have a special opponent out there and are starting to look over their shoulders as they prepare to execute their evil deeds.

Book excerpt: Imagine Aunt Bee from The Andy Griffith Show with a lot more backbone and confidence," wrote Publishers Weekly about Miss Julia, Ann Ross's endearing Dixie doyenne of decorum. Don't miss her latest, Miss Julia Raises the Roof, coming April 2018 from Viking. In her latest romp, Miss Julia—now Mrs. Sam Murdoch—returns from her whirlwind elopement, only to find herself roped into Hazel Marie's scheme to raise money by throwing a beauty pageant. Though it all seems a tad distasteful, it's nothing compared to the revelation that Pigeon Forge, the marriage mill across the state line that wedded Julia and Sam, might not be legitimate. And a flustered Julia can't help wondering whether she and Sam can keep up appearances before the town finds out they might be living in sin.

Book excerpt: In her first case, Surreptitious Spirits, Angelene pierces the veil of mystery which enshrouds the uncanny circumstances surrounding an inexplicable disappearance of two prominent brothers, one an archeologist, and the other an anthropologist involved in the discovery of the century. Angelene is forced into an uneasy alliance with a mysterious stranger with a common agenda. Together they vanquish a crop of dangerous underworld figures, including a sinister minister and his misguided followers. In her second case, On Satan’s Doorstep, Angelene finds herself pulled from her current case concerning the disappearance of the troubled teenager of one of the Windy City’s most influential couples, only to be reassigned to the gruesome murder of her employer’s son. It doesn’t take long for Angelene to discover the two cases are horribly intertwined, and that she can trust no one. In Angelene’s third case, Of Monsters’ and Men, she finds herself completely swept off her feet by a handsome English billionaire with a very mysterious past; he very well may be one of the world’s most horrific murderers. All the while Angelene attempts to untangle a sinister web of intrigue and deceit ensnaring her which constitutes the missing person case on which she is working, spun by Chicago’s Chinatown underworld’s most dangerous criminal queen. In Angelene’s fourth case, The Moon Also Rises, Chicago’s premiere Private Investigator finds herself combing the streets of the Windy City tracking down a ferocious killer with the aid of two deep cover operatives and uncovers a close friend’s hairy secret past. This time our heroine may have bitten off more than she can chew. As usual, Angelene Alatorre’s cases have one thing in common; the more light that gets shed on them the darker they become. The Trojan Dark Horse In her fifth case, after long exhausting months of intense investigation which lead our heroine, Angelene Alatorre and Her cousin Dominic, a government agent, on a trail of obscure clues across two continents, the pair return home to the Windy City, Chicago. She returns to her place of employment, the Steinmetz Security and Detective Agency, from her sabbatical only to find she has been assigned the task of personal bodyguard to Mr. Grant Schutte. Mr. Schutte is a billionaire real estate developer whose latest ambition is the Presidency of the United States of America. It doesn’t take long for Angelene to discover why Mr. Schutte needs her services. Eventually, due to her latest assignment, Angelene discovers the greatest threat to humanity has been hiding in her own backyard.
