Book excerpt: Youth participation is not an end in itself, but a means of achieving positive changes in young people’s lives and of building better democratic societies. Participation is a fundamental human right recognised, among others, in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Participation is also a core principle of human rights and is a condition for effective democratic citizenship for all people. The aim of the Council of Europe’s youth policy is to provide young people with equal opportunities and experience which enable them to develop the knowledge, skills and competencies to play a full part in all aspects of society. Youth participation is at the core of youth policy in the Council of Europe, which includes co-management as a form of sharing power with youth representatives. Youth participation is promoted across the various sectors of the Council of Europe. The revised European Charter on the Participation of Young People in Local and Regional Life, adopted in May 2003 by the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, is a standard-setting instrument for youth participation. It supports young people, youth workers, youth organisations and local authorities in promoting and enhancing meaningful youth participation at local and regional level across Europe. The manual “Have your say!” was produced to support local and regional authorities, youth organisations and young people who want to give young people a real say for a meaningful democratic youth participation. According to the Charter, participation is about having the right, the means, the space and the opportunity and, where necessary, the support to participate in and influence decisions and engage in actions and activities so as to contribute to building of a better society. The manual “Have your say!” is an educational and practical tool to support all those committed to making that right a reality for more young people in the Council of Europe member states.

Book excerpt: Does it matter what my name is? I am a woman. Does it matter what my religion is? I believe in God. Does it matter what country I come from? I live on earth. I am talking to you. Specifically, I am talking to your mind. Do you agree or disagree with all my philosophical, psychological, and logical thoughts? Some of my thoughts might probably be nonsense and illogical. Sometimes when I think profoundly about a matter, I often come to the conclusion that there is no universal definition for sense or logic and that they vary from one person to another. My thoughts are unsettling for most people and adequate for fewer people. My words can be enticing and eerie but detailed with metaphors you can abide by on the darkest yet most hopeful times. Read me. In this book, I have quite precisely changed the modus operandi in the writing of a novel. www.rima-jbara.com

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades, Billy Wayne Sharp has worshipped at the altar of white supremacy. In doing so, he has been successful in drawing thousands to that altar, establishing himself as a revered leader of the white nationalist movement. Politicians, public servants, and every-day adherents to white supremacy embrace Billy Wayne’s belief that white people were ordained by God to lord over non-whites. His belief in the biblical correctness of white supremacy has led to murder, fire bombings, attempted assassinations, and plans for an apocalyptic race war, which he believes will result in his becoming the new Messiah. The town of Sharpville, Mississippi stands at the crossroads of a historic existential moment. It is the epicenter of Billy Wayne’s plans to become the new Messiah. Will the town that bears his family name reject Billy Wayne’s efforts to violently transform the racial and religious landscape of the entire nation? Will it rise up against or give in to his belief in the “natural order”? Will the fruits of his racist legacy develop rot and die, or will they become hardy and multiply?

Author Katie M. Scott chronicles the journey of walking through tragedy by the Grace of God, the Word of God and Faith in God. It’s a book about having determination to never give up or give in to that thing that comes to take you out. It’s a story of releasing the hurt, the pain and the shame of your past, and coming clean so that God can do what He does: bring you out and cause you to be victorious, no matter what you are faced with in life. It’s about coming to that place in life where there is “Nothing Hidden, Nothing Broken,” because you believe God is who He says He is and He will do what He says He will do, always. We have often heard it said, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” In telling her story, Katie is also telling the story of so many others. No matter what you are going through, no matter what you are faced with in life, remember - GOD IS GREATER! God promised to never leave us or forsake us, and He never will because He is faithful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the STR Theatre Book Prize 2023 A manifesto for the future of playwriting, this book challenges you to be a part of that future in the belief that it is fundamentally important to write plays. Plays help us understand ourselves, others, and the world around us. Reading this book, you will be challenged to learn your craft, explode what you know, prioritise what is important to you, and write in the way that only you can write. Most books on playwriting explain how to create a believable character in a story driven by plot. This book, however, goes even further in its exploration of the playwright's most valuable tool: theatricality. By learning from the past, and the present, the playwrights of tomorrow can create new, vivid, theatrical drama for the future. This manifesto also examines the process of writing, the art of collaboration, and the impact of writing on a playwright's mental health. It identifies the highs and lows, as well as the trials and tribulations, of life as a playwright in today's world. Theatre is a living artform. It is time for playwrights to acknowledge that fact and to celebrate the unique, primal thrill that a live theatre experience offers us. The future of playwriting is in your hands. Do you accept the challenge?

Book excerpt: The story cannot be revealed, but the protagonist Niharika will surely find a place in your fancy. It is in many ways about the obscure and colourful parts of Niharika’s life. Niharika who was just two years old, when she was orphaned in the oblivion of her infancy. Niharika, who along with her riches has a rich personal life. It is all Niharika’s very personal story, and the author Aakash Sarkar by his own confession has written her story, as he famously says, because I have looked and looked, and I didn’t find anything better to do. Niharika walks through that house and collects that girl, who is still stuck in the middle of so many sorrow and so many grief. And they have all also lost each other, can’t even find each other. She collects them as she encounters them in her walks. And she nurses them. She sits with them, at that corner or in that room where nobody comes and nobody ever came, and they are all, the whole crowd of it is united by their journey, and Niharika tells them the numerous bounties they found in that journey, like the Chinese portrait, their mother’s diary, a full half house, hundreds of stories, a nose, a pair of lips, cheekbones, sexuality, some flamboyance, and then one of them, holds her hands and picks her up, and takes her in those journeys again, through the long corridors of Maheshwari Villa to the uppermost terrace in the house, where in no more than a month she will find herself sitting in the middle of a dilemma. I don’t know how Godmother is typically defined, but I define it as the presence of a mother in her absence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conflict is inevitable, in both deals and disputes. Yet when clients call in the lawyers to haggle over who gets how much of the pie, traditional hard-bargaining tactics can lead to ruin. Too often, deals blow up, cases don’t settle, relationships fall apart, justice is delayed. Beyond Winning charts a way out of our current crisis of confidence in the legal system. It offers a fresh look at negotiation, aimed at helping lawyers turn disputes into deals, and deals into better deals, through practical, tough-minded problem-solving techniques. In this step-by-step guide to conflict resolution, the authors describe the many obstacles that can derail a legal negotiation, both behind the bargaining table with one’s own client and across the table with the other side. They offer clear, candid advice about ways lawyers can search for beneficial trades, enlarge the scope of interests, improve communication, minimize transaction costs, and leave both sides better off than before. But lawyers cannot do the job alone. People who hire lawyers must help change the game from conflict to collaboration. The entrepreneur structuring a joint venture, the plaintiff embroiled in a civil suit, the CEO negotiating an employment contract, the real estate developer concerned with environmental hazards, the parent considering a custody battle—clients who understand the pressures and incentives a lawyer faces can work more effectively within the legal system to promote their own best interests. Attorneys exhausted by the trench warfare of cases that drag on for years will find here a positive, proven approach to revitalizing their profession.
