Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a holistic veterinarian and scientist, Dr. Gary Richter helps dog and cat owners to navigate the thicket of treatment options and separate the fact from the fiction. He wants us to use what actually works, not just what Western science or alternative medicine say "should" work. This multifaceted approach to health is known as integrative medicine. Dr. Richter examines traditional medicine from many cultures alongside modern medical techniques, describing the best of complementary care and the best of conventional veterinary medicine. Every treatment he recommends has the backing of scientific research or years of successful outcomes in his clinical practice. After explaining the treatment, he offers specific recommendations for an integrative approach to common diseases, including allergies, skin conditions, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. A holistic approach to health includes nutrition, as it sets up the foundation for your pet’s health. Dr. Richter cuts through the hype in the pet-food world and explains how to choose the best commercial foods and supplements, and even includes both raw and cooked dog- and cat-food recipes for general diet as well as to treat specific needs. He also explains how we can use the right foods and supplements to "hack" the body’s processes, including the immune system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Make time to work on them. Pets, like humans, become out of shape without physical activity. To help prevent many behavioral and medical problems, it is critical to get 1 hour of physical activity every day of the week. You can even divide the hour of activity into three or four smaller bursts of fun. In the morning, take a 15-minute walk around the block. When you get home from work, toss the ball in the backyard. Then, after dinner, go for a 30-minute walk around the neighborhood with the whole family. Provide a stimulating environment for cats by providing a variety of toys. Make time for mental exercise as well. For their mental health, 15 minutes of mental exercise is equivalent to one hour of physical play. The more mental stimulation we give our pets, the less likely they are to develop undesirable behaviors. Feed your pet's meals using a special food-dispensing ball. Toss a handful of food into the yard and let your pet sniff around for hidden treasures. Once or twice a day, for 10 minutes at a time, practice basic obedience (sit, stay, and down).

But science and technology alone aren’t enough: we have to do our part, too. And this thorough guide to the older dog teaches us how. It introduces the basics of caring for a senior pet; examines issues of genetics, environment, and nutrition; presents a "prevention primer” for forestalling disease and old-age conditions; and explains how to recognize vital signs of change, from cloudy eyes to achy joints. Most important, it offers comforting advice on what to do when your beloved pet does get sick, and how to deal with both the financial and emotional costs. Throughout, dog owners tell their inspiring personal stories.
