Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the heart of every bee hive is a queen bee. Since her well-being is linked to the well-being of the entire colony, the ability to find her among the residents of the hive is an essential beekeeping skill. In QueenSpotting, experienced beekeeper and professional “swarm catcher” Hilary Kearney challenges readers to “spot the queen” with 48 fold-out visual puzzles — vivid up-close photos of the queen hidden among her many subjects. QueenSpotting celebrates the unique, fascinating life of the queen bee chronicles of royal hive happenings such as The Virgin Death Match, The Nuptual Flight — when the queen mates with a cloud of male drones high in the air — and the dramatic Exodus of the Swarm from the hive. Readers will thrill at Kearney’s adventures in capturing these swarms from the strange places they settle, including a Jet Ski, a couch, a speed boat, and an owl’s nesting box. Fascinating, fun, and instructive, backyard beekeepers and nature lovers alike will find reason to return to the pages again and again. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Top-Bar Beekeeping is an offering designed to encourage beekeepers around the world to keep bees naturally by providing beekeeping basics, hive management and the utilization of top-bar hives. In recent years, beekeepers have had to face tremendous challenges, from pests, such as varroa and tracheal mites, to the mysterious but even more devastating phenomenon known as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). Yet in backyards and on rooftops all over the world, bees are being raised successfully, even without antibiotics, miticides, or other chemical inputs. More and more organically-minded beekeepers are now using top-bar hives, in which the shape of the interior resembles a hollow log. Long lasting and completely biodegradable, a top-bar hive made of untreated wood allows bees to build comb naturally rather than simply filling prefabricated foundation frames in a typical box hive with added supers. Top-bar hives yield slightly less honey but produce more beeswax than a typical Langstroth box hive. Regular hive inspection and the removal of old combs helps to keep bees healthier and naturally disease-free. Top-Bar Beekeeping provides complete information on hive management and other aspects of using these innovative hives. All home and hobbyist beekeepers who have the time and interest in keeping bees intensively should consider the natural, low-stress methods outlined in this book. It will also appeal to home orchardists, gardeners, and permaculture practitioners who look to bees for pollination as well as honey or beeswax.

From alpine meadows in the national forests of the Rocky Mountains to the Sonoran Desert in the Coronado National Forest in Arizona and from the boreal forests of the Tongass National Forest in Alaska to the Ocala National Forest in Florida, bees can be found anywhere in North America, where flowers bloom. From forests to farms, from cities to wildlands, there are 4,000 native bee species in the United States, from the tiny Perdita minima to large carpenter bees. This illustrated and colorful pamphlet provides valued information about native bees --over 4,000 in population --varying in a wide array of sizes, shapes, and colors. They are also different in their life styles, the places they frequent, the nests they build, the flowers they visit, and their season of activity. Yet, they all provide an invaluable ecosystem service - pollination -to 80 percent of flowering plants. Blueberry bees, bumble bees, yellow jacket bees, carpenter bees, and more are explored, including the differences in their gender, nests, and geographical regions that they visit.

Book excerpt: If you've been toying with the idea of keeping bees but don't know where to start, where to get the bees from, how to set it up, how to set up your beehives for optimal honey production, how to maintain the health of your colony and much more, keep reading… You Are about to Discover How to Start Keeping Bees for Honey or Wax, From Scratch, Even If You've Never Done Anything Like It Before! Bees are probably the most important insects in the world, not just for their honey and wax but because they play an important part in pollination, which means without them, we would probably not have the juicy fruits we munch on. It is no wonder that commercial bee keeping is said to add $15-$20 billion in economic value every single year! This probably explains why raising bees is quickly becoming more and more popular by the day- and it's not just because it is an interesting hobby, but also because it is one of the best ways to save, make money, boost your plant garden and still get the cleanest and safest bee products (honey and wax) straight to your table. And hey, that's not the best part. These insects are some of the most independent animals on the planet. In fact, they prefer to be left alone. It is more or less a set, provide optimal conditions for them to thrive by keeping off pesticides, and forget – the bees will fend for themselves and won't require any other input from you! And they will reward you handsomely for that with tons of honey, wax and pollinated plants! Yeah, well… all that sounds appetizing, but how would I get started? I've never done this before… You wonder? Good concern. You've probably also asked yourself this: How do I acquire the bees? How do I set up a colony? What do bees eat; how do I feed them? Is honey a profitable product? How do I avoid stings; can I harvest honey and wax without having to tolerate one or two stings? If you've been having such questions and concerns, then you need this beginners' guide to beekeeping. This book will take you through everything you need to know about this easy practice right from selecting the bee itself, setting up your colony, feeding them, avoiding common problems and selling honey- just to mention the least. More precisely, this book will teach you: • The history and evolution of beekeeping, and what research says about the practice • The different types of beekeeping • The benefits and risks of beekeeping • How to select the right type of bee and set up the bee colony • The types of hives and how to choose the right one for you • How to buy, transport and feed new bees • What you need to look at as you inspect your beehive • What you need to know about bee stings • How to avert and solve common problems • What you need to know about honey prices and market demand • What you need to know about the colonies' activities in different seasons • How to harvest honey and beeswax …And much more! So if you've been desiring to establish your own beautiful hives but have been a bit apprehensive about starting because you couldn't figure out how to do so without risking your money, time and life, then I believe you now have a better reason to get started today! Even if you are scared and confused, this book will alleviate your fears and give you the much needed confidence to get started and succeed at it! Book excerpt: • Author Dave Hunter is at the leading edge of bee and pollinator issues • Mason bees are part of the solution to honeybees’ decline • No other bee book addresses the topic with such depth and interest • Includes useful information about leafcutter bees too! The national media regularly features dire stories on honeybee colony collapse and its danger to our food supply. But there's another, unsung bee that has the potential to save the planet—the mason bee. Mason Bee Revolution explains how docile, hard-working, solitary mason bees (and their compatriots, the leafcutter bees) are even more productive pollinators than honeybees, and keeping them can be a fun, easy, backyard hobby for gardeners, conservationists, foodies, and families everywhere. Why these bees? Bee pollination is critical for about 80 percent of US agricultural crops, increasing crop value by an estimated $15 billion annually. Since 2006, nearly a third of all honeybee hives have been lost each year, due to parasites, pesticides, habitat loss, climate change, and a newer malady called Colony Collapse Disorder. While scientists search for answers to save the honeybee, Dave Hunter and his company, Crown Bees, are leading the effort to increase the population of other highly efficient pollinators: One mason bee can produce twelve pounds of cherries, via pollination, where it would take sixty honey bees to achieve the same. Mason Bee Revolution is an easy-to-follow guide to keeping both mason and leafcutter bees. It tells you how to set up, care for, and harvest your own bees and what types of plants and habitat encourage mason and leafcutter bees, as well as provides general information on other common pollinators and bee-related facts, projects, and personalities.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Full color 58 honey bee and related pictures. This book is for the beginner through advanced beekeeper. After 50 years of working with bees in mainly the southeastern United States, my aim in writing this book is to provide useful tips and techniques on bee keeping and production with special attention to its financial dimensions. Such information should be helpful to the advanced beginner as well as the experienced professional. However, since all beekeeping is local, some of these tips and techniques may not work in every area. In addition, beekeeping finance should be understood to succeed in building and growing any beekeeping operation. Many bee businesses fail due to poor financial controls and planning. Successful bee keeping first requires a basic knowledge of bee biology and physiology. Once acquired, specific management and financial techniques may be applied. In other words, the beekeeper's management must support the bees' natural biology. If the beekeeper does not do this, he will lose his bees, and everything else will be for naught. Once a bee keeper understands the bees' biology, the current management techniques should be examined for financial efficiency. Optimizing your beekeeping finance is critical for operating a profitable honey bee operation. We are competing not only with domestic United States beekeepers, but also overseas beekeepers. The competition scene is different for honey production than pollination. Honey production has much more overseas competition, whereas pollination is more domestic. There are many small honey producers that compete with local honey that is in demand. Likewise, much pollination is local also, with smaller acreages.
