Book Synopsis Success with the Media by : Leonard Sipes
Download or read book Success with the Media written by Leonard Sipes and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-03-27 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many years ago I discovered that books or courses that addressed the reality of our media relations jobs did not exist. The book is for spokespeople and individuals likely to talk to reporters. It's also for organizational executives who make most media decisions. Lastly, I believe journalists and news management will find an insider's account of bureaucracies and their response to media inquiries interesting and insightful. What will this book do for you? Success With The Media breaks new ground. It addresses the needs of new and veteran spokespersons. It provides the stories, tips, and insight to succeed in this vastly misunderstood profession. It discusses an endless array of issues not covered by other books, especially the difficulties of internal politics and obstruction. If you understand the media relations and organizational process, you will prosper. If not, you and your organization could face a very public demise. Do you know that some of your top executives may talk to the media without telling you? Have you ever had an agency head tell you something that wasn't true that ended up on the front page of the morning newspaper? Have you ever been given advice by a technical expert that turned out to be wrong, and you had to retract the statement? These are all real examples of life in the media relations trenches. You need to know that these pitfalls exist, and you need to recognize what you can do to avoid them. You need knowledge of social and digital media; you need it summarized for quick lessons and information as to what works and what doesn't. You need to understand how to market and promote your organization, how to break bad news and how to take care of yourself and those around you. Knowing what to do will earn the respect of your executives. I have never lost an agency head due to negative publicity; their gratitude provided me with both job security and an endless series of promotions and pay increases. You will become an invaluable part of your organization. The book also provides management with the knowledge to properly guide their spokespersons. They will understand what happens and why. It allows them to become a team leader and use the capacities of their public affairs team effectively. Finally, reporters and news executives will have a better understanding of what happens when they call for information or comment. If they know the cumbersome internal processing of media inquiries, they will understand that confusion and delay is often an inevitable part of the process. Imprecise reactions may not carry the negative inferences many reporters impose on sloppy or inaccurate replies.

Book Synopsis Essentials in Journalism by : H. F. Harrington
Download or read book Essentials in Journalism written by H. F. Harrington and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials in Journalism: A Manual in Newspaper Making for College Classes Experience has been the stern schoolmaster of most present-day newspaper men. The road to recognition and to influence has presented manifold obstacles. In earlier days the aspirant in the field of journalism, beginning as a "printer's devil" who inked the rollers and swept out the back office, or as a callow "cub" reporter who "fell down" on important assignments, found every stage of his progress marked with hard knocks and meager pay. It is the remembrance of what they themselves have gone through or perhaps the fresh impression of some ambitious young fellow who is working out his salvation under their very eyes, that prompts these experts in the profession to declare that the newspaper office is and can be the only proper place to learn the newspaper business. Indeed, there are many newspaper men, even to-day, who are so firmly convinced of the primary importance of the city editor's blue pencil as the one essential in the reporter's education that the college candidate for reportorial work is not infrequently made the subject of pointed jests. The collegian is full of unpractical learning, old-timers say, too superior in his own conceit to learn from his fellows, fond of florid adjectives and of verbose rhetoric, not adapted for the swift gathering and writing of the news. Many of these impeachments are unfortunately true. The newcomer is handicapped by the fact that, before he can succeed, he must unlearn not a few things ingrafted by college training. He must keep on the level of common, everyday people and must remember he is writing for a newspaper and not for fame. As the days pass his style begins to lose its grandiloquent cast and his mind grows more discriminating and analytical. When once the college man has learned what newspaper work requires of him he has a better chance to succeed than the untrained man at the opposite desk. The importance of experience in a newspaper office cannot be minimized. Its instruction is sure, sound, practical.
