Book excerpt: Who among us does not have rivals? Plutarch writes about it as easily as only great communicators do, and explains how to treat those who are not on our side. In "De capienda former inimicis utilitate": "How to profit by one’s enemies," the great philosopher introduces his thought with irony but also with overwhelming logic, revealing an infallible system for winning in a confrontation with one’s enemies. Rules conceived long ago, but which are relevant more than ever. A great help to improve our relationships with others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plutarch (46-119) was a Greek philosopher, historian, and biographer. He studied mathematics and philosophy at the Academy of Athens, the same institution studied by Plato, and dedicated himself to politics, achieving high public offices. Plutarch wrote hundreds of texts, among them Parallel Lives, which consists of a collection of 64 biographies of prominent Greek and Roman figures. His work, " How to Profit from Your Enemies," teaches us that although they may harm us, our enemies can also aid in our personal and moral development. Plutarch, drawing from other thinkers such as Xenophon and Diogenes, demonstrates that the emotions stirred by them can be excellent motivators for decision-making when used correctly. Written in the first century of the Christian Era, "How to Profit from Your Enemies" remains entirely relevant, as in an increasingly competitive world, knowing how to benefit from adverse situations can be the difference between success and failure.

Book excerpt: Amoral, cunning, ruthless, and instructive, this multi-million-copy New York Times bestseller is the definitive manual for anyone interested in gaining, observing, or defending against ultimate control – from the author of The Laws of Human Nature. In the book that People magazine proclaimed “beguiling” and “fascinating,” Robert Greene and Joost Elffers have distilled three thousand years of the history of power into 48 essential laws by drawing from the philosophies of Machiavelli, Sun Tzu, and Carl Von Clausewitz and also from the lives of figures ranging from Henry Kissinger to P.T. Barnum. Some laws teach the need for prudence (“Law 1: Never Outshine the Master”), others teach the value of confidence (“Law 28: Enter Action with Boldness”), and many recommend absolute self-preservation (“Law 15: Crush Your Enemy Totally”). Every law, though, has one thing in common: an interest in total domination. In a bold and arresting two-color package, The 48 Laws of Power is ideal whether your aim is conquest, self-defense, or simply to understand the rules of the game.

Book excerpt: President Donald J. Trump drives liberals and the mainstream press berserk by labeling them the enemy of the American people. While the testy talking heads and petulant penmen in D.C. might disagree, all relevant evidence supports Trump’s claim. Hilariously told, Enemies: The Press vs. The American People is a knee-slapping account of the follies of the corporate press freak show. It highlights the media’s fact-free and for-profit deception of unsuspecting Americans while delivering the press the proverbial beat down it so richly deserves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How should we live? In ancient Greece one man came up with a pleasingly simple answer to this question. The philosopher Epicurus taught his followers that pleasure and contentment were the aims of the good life. For hundreds of years Epicureanism was one of the dominant schools of philosophy. But by the 6th century it had all but disappeared. Discovering how and why Epicureanism was driven from philosophy and public discourse reveals much about how Western thought developed. Despite attempts to erase him, the lessons of Epicurus have been recovered from the mists of time and the ashes of Vesuvius. How he was restored to his place in history is a story of brilliant Renaissance scholars, chance discoveries, and a hunger for intellectual freedom. This new biography of Epicurus reveals the life of Epicurus and traces how his teachings have influenced thinkers across time. Epicurus still has much to teach us about friendship, happiness, and our place in the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a successful career as an economist, attorney, real estate investor, and high school teacher, Stanton Braverman moves to Charlottesville as a part of his retirement plan. Up until then, everything went his way. But in Charlottesville, things went wrong. It did not make sense. Why did the city not care about the redevelopment of the Belmont neighborhood? While it was on the wrong side of the railroad tracks that ran through the town and home to many of the urban poor, it had a lot going for itself at a time when most cities were developing neglected neighborhoods. But Charlottesville was not interested in this development and was active in trying to curb any turnaround. For the author, this was crazy. Braverman fought with the city council about their neglect of the community. At the same time, the urban renewal movement caught on in Belmont—houses were remodeled and real estate values increased at startling rates. The area became charming, and tourists wanted to be there. And yet the council did not care. They were being obstructionists. They continuously misled the community about condemned bridges that resulted in a fight over the rezoning of a residential area and a court fight over a fresh water dam worth thirty-one million dollars that was not needed. In the story, Braverman tries to figure out why his house and his neighborhood are ground zero for such a battle with the council. He shows how the council’s inability to connect with the community led to the violent riots over the removal of the statute of Robert E. Lee. Moreover, he concludes that when the council fully understands what was happening, then the war between the council and the neighborhood will end peacefully.

Book excerpt: When people and circumstances upset us, how do we deal with them? Often, we feel victimized. We become hurt, angry, and defensive. We end up seeing others as enemies, and when things don't go our way, we become enemies to ourselves. But what if we could move past this pain, anger, and defensiveness? Inspired by Buddhist philosophy, this book introduces us to the four kinds of enemies we encounter in life: the outer enemy, people, institutions, and situations that mean to harm us; the inner enemy, anger, hatred, fear, and other destructive emotions; the secret enemy, self-obsession that isolates us from others; and the super-secret enemy, deep-seated self-loathing that prevents us from finding inner freedom and true happiness. In this practical guide, we learn not only how to identify our enemies, but more important, how to transform our relationship to them. Love Your Enemies teaches us how to: - Break free from the mode of "us" versus "them" thinking - develop compassion, patience, and love - Accept what is beyond our control - Embrace lovingkindness, right speech, and other core concepts Throughout, authors Sharon Salzberg and Robert Thurman share stories and exercises for achieving finding peace within yourself and with the world. Drawing from ancient spiritual wisdom and modern psychology, Love Your Enemies presents tools that are useful for all readers.
