Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geological Observer, 1853 The following work was undertaken in the hope that the expe ricuce of many years might assist, and, perhaps, abridge the labours of those who may be desirous of entering upon the study of geology, and especially in the field. He object is, to afford a general view of the chief points of that science, such as existing observations would lead us to infer were established; to show how the correct ness of such observations may be tested; and to sketch the directions in which they may apparently be extended. Having been, to a certain extent, founded upon a little treatise, entitled How to Observe in Geology, long since out of print, a somewhat similar name has been retained for the present volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Field-Geology AT the request of the Lords of the Committee of Privy Council on Education I gave, in the month of August, 1876, at South Kensington, two lectures upon geological maps and instruments of surveying. These lectures formed part of a series designed for teachers, and in illustration of the Loan Collection of Scientific Instru ments at that time exhibited. Treating the subject allotted to me in what seemed likely to prove the most useful manner, I dwelt more specially upon the methods of Observation requisite in ordinary field-geology and endeavoured to show how, by the practice of these methods, geological maps and sections, representing in condensed form the facts established by field-work, could be constructed. The lectures were published in pamphlet form later in the autumn of the same year. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Field Geology Geological maps are just as necessary as ordinary maps of mine workings, and are not much harder to make When one knows how to go about it. It is the lack of this knowledge Which is a serious handicap to many mining men Who are naturally keen and intelligent observers, but Who fail to record and corre late their observations. They often carry an immense amount of geological data in their minds and make use of it When looking over their mine maps; but such mental pictures lack the graphic quality found only in good geologic maps and sections, Which usually meet With instant approval on the part of practical men. Geological literature usually deals With results rather than with the methods of obtaining them, and the terms employed are often of a highly technical nature, so that the text is more or less unintelligible to one Who has not had training in the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations and Reflections on Geology: Intended to Serve as an Introduction to the Catalogue of His Collection of Extraneous Fossils Will you be so good as to inform me whether the Volume which you put into my hands, on the day of the last Oration, he intended as a present to the College or Museum, or a loan similar to the other papers which Captain Sir Everard Home lent, to permit a transcript to be made, some years since? I merely wished to know whether I ought to present it as a Donation at the next Board of Curators, or report upon it if otherwise. I beg leave to acquaint you that the above-mentioned Volume is imperfect, containing only Part the First of Mr. Hunter's Introduction to a History of Fossils and that there was or is a Second Part, of about the same quantity of manuscript and that this manuscript was one among the last that Mr. Hunter revised, and made large additions to, a short time previous to his death, is evident from the fact that a considerable part is in my own handwriting, with Mr. Hunter's subsequent corrections and additions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Field Geology The first twelve chapters are concerned with the recognition and interpretation of geologic structures and topographic forms as they are observed. Here the aim has been to describe to gether phenomena which in certain respects resemble one another, but which may be of diverse origins. Where possible the treat ment has been empirical rather than genetic. In order to assist the reader in identifying various forms and structures, a number of tables or keys have been prepared. From the very nature of geology they can not be final or complete. They are presented with the hope that they may be of some value at least in showing what features to observe in the field. In the last six chapters are described methods of geologic surveying, the nature and construction of maps, sections, and block diagrams, the interpretation of topographic and geologic maps, the solution of certain geologic computations, and the preparation of geologic reports. I have tried rather to teach the method of geology, than its facts; to furnish the student with a key to all geology, rough indeed and rudi mentary, but sure and sound enough, I trust, to help him to unlock most geological problems which he may meet, in any quarter of the globe. But young men must remember always, that neither' this book. Nor all the books in the world, will make them geolo gists. No amount of book learning will make a man a scientific man: nothing but patient observation, and quiet and fair thought over what he has observed. He must go out for himself, see for himself, compare and judge for himself, in the field, the quarry, the cut ting. He must study rocks, ores, fossils, in. The stones of the walls have been chipped and dressed with chisels and hammers the marble of the chimney-pieces has been smoothed and polished; the slates have been split into thin plates. But some of these building mate rials have undergone much greater changes. The bricks, for instance, were originally soft clay which has been hardened by being baked in ovens. The mortar by which the stones or bricks of the walls are held together. Has been obtained by burning limestone in kilns. The iron used in the house was first of all in the state of a dull red or brown stone, which had to be roasted and melted before the clear bright metal came out of it. I 3. But although these various stones differ so much from each other, they agree in one point - they come from underneath the surface of the ground. If you could trace back each of them to the place from which it came you would find that the freestone and limestone were taken out of quarries, perhaps not very far away, that the slates were cut out of the side of some hill, probably in Wales, that the marble was quarried out of some distant moun tain, possibly in Italy, that the coal was dug out of mines, sunk deep into the earth in some part of Bri tain, and that the bricks were made from clay dug out of pits on some low ground in your neighbourhood.
