Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Keep Bees for Profit As far back as the dawn of history the honey bee was regarded as a benefactor to man, and it is not surprising, therefore, that on the ancient monuments of Egypt, in the classic writings of Rome and Greece, we find many references to the bee, which, with the exception of the silkworm, has the distinction of being the only insect kept by man in a semi-domestic state for his benefit. The interest of our forefathers in these busy little people was due to the fact that honey was practically the only sweet which they could readily obtain. The bees were hunted in their native habitat in the cleft of the rocks, in the heart of the trees of the forest, and such other places where they were accustomed to build their combs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Keep Bees: A Handbook for the Use of Beginners When we began bee-keeping we found the wide range of information and varying methods given in the manuals confusing; but a little experience taught us that bee-keeping is a simple and delightful business which can be carried on in a modest way without a great amount of special training. After a beginning has been made, skill in managing the bees is gained naturally and inevitably, and interest is then stimu lated by the wider outlook which bewilders the novice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Keep Bees Since the first edition of this bulletin was issued in 1911, there has been a considerable development in bee-keeping in Rhode Island; as well as other states, and the prospects are bright for a healthy and steady growth in the future. People generally are learning more and more to use and appreciate honey as a food and the demand is therefore growing. The possibility of keeping and tending a few swarms of bees to produce honey for home use even in small back yards, is becoming more fully known and the profitableness of larger ventures in the production of market honey is also being established. While some of this development is due to an increase of interest in all lines of agriculture, and especially in such ventures to help reduce the high cost of living, which can be pursued on limited areas, such as a small back yard, nevertheless, I believe that a considerable part of it in Rhode Island comes as a result of the educational campaign carried on by Mr. Miller, under the auspices of the State Board of Agriculture through such publications as this bulletin, through lectures and through visits and demonstations in connection with the administration of the Apiary Inspection Law. Before the advent of this work, bee-keepers had frequent disastrous experiences due to bee diseases, insect pests and a general lack of knowledge of bee-keeping which discouraged many of those already in the business and kept otters from attempting to enter the field. Mr. Miller has been able in connection with his inspection work to demonstrate how to effectively deal with most of the troubles with which the bee-keeper must cope and make bee-keeping an assured success instead of a partial or complete failure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bees and How to Keep Them Honey has a claim to be regularly use-d in every home both on account of its sweetness, which is delicately flavoured according to the different kinds of flowers from which it is gathered and also because of its high food value, it being a concentrated and easily assimilated heat and energy-producing food. It also readily takes the place of sugar in cooking, preserving fruits, etc. Throughout Canada there is an increasing number of people who are making beekeeping their principal business and there are thousands who find it an auxiliary pursuit that yields no mean profit and that combines a healthy outdoor occupation in pleasant weather with the fascinating study of an insect whose marvellous habits are a subject of absorbing interest to the nature lover. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pleasurable Bee-Keeping IN writings dating from the earliest times of which we have any record, frequent allusion is made to bees and honey. As a food honey stands unrivalled for its delicate aroma, and it is also recognised as a valuable force producer. Early British History abounds in references to the keeping of bees, and to the value of the honey and wax they produce; and it may be inferred that even in those times bee-culture had assumed sufficient importance to rank as a rural industry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bees Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith a manuscript entitled "Bees," by E. F. Phillips, Ph. D., in charge of bee culture in this bureau. This paper will supersede Farmers' Bulletins 59 and 397, A few new illustrations which add greatly to the value of the paper and some minor alterations in the text are the only changes in this from Farmers Bulletin 397; but since it is not now the policy of the department to issue revised editions, it is recommended that this bulletin be issued under a new serial number. In the preparation of this paper the aim has been to give briefly such information as is needed by persons engaged in the keeping of bees, and to answer inquiries such as are frequently received from correspondents of the department. No attempt has been made to include discussions of bee anatomy, honey plants, or the more special manipulations sometimes practiced, such as queen rearing. The discussion of apparatus is necessarily brief. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Bee-Keeping From the very earliest historic times, the Hive Bee has been cultivated by man for the sake Of the delicious honey and useful wax that it produces, as well as studied for the manifold lessons it furnishes in industry and physiology. The busy merchant, when wanting a symbol for his house, could find no better sign than the Bee-hive. How common the axiom, A very Hive Of industry. The poet and the moralist fails not to quote our little friend as an example to the young; and the beautiful hymn Of Dr. Watts, 'the Little Busy Bee, ' can never be forgotten as a memory of our early days, and in ages to come will be taught to our children's children with the same loving wish Of a good result as was hoped for us. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book About Bees: Their History, Habits, and Instincts; Together With the First Principles of Modern Bee-Keeping for Young Readers Guides' to the management of Bees; neither have I attempted in any way to produce a scientific treatise. I have simply endeavoured to write an introduction to the subject suitable to young readers and, while impressing the importance of habits of observation, have sought to unfold to them one little page of the vast Book of Nature; and, by showing some of the simplest of the many wonders of bee life, to give them that interest in the subject which may lead them to desire to know more, and, after wards, to take up Bee-keeping for themselves, with that knowledge which, while it adds tenfold to the interest, is more or less absolutely necessary to make it profitable. It has five yellow bands instead of three - practically the whole of the abdomen is yellow. Bees of this variety are more susceptible to cold and wet than the three banded Italians and rather predisposed to bee-paralysis. Italians, when pure, do not cap their combs so white as black bees do, and are therefore less suitable for the production of comb honey. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Profitable Bee-Keeping for Small-Holders and Others There is no foreign honey which can compare in quality with the native article. A further point is that good honey will keep for an indefinite period without deteriorating in any way, and, should low prices rule, the bee-keeper can hold his produce for a better market without suffering loss. This necessity does not often arise, except in the case of a honey glut, as in the record year of 1906. Many poor colonies secured fifty pounds of surplus honey in that year, and some of my own yielded over a hundredweight each in a medium district.
