This applies both to the points of beauty and usefulness - but the trees must be properly selected, planted right and well cared for. These - matters have not had enough attention in the past. Nowadays, however, people are coming to understand that orchards will not take care of themselves any more than will vegetable gardens. Varieties, and methods of culture as well, have been steadily improved. Then, too, people are using fruit in greater quantity, year by year, and are naturally led to ask themselves why should we buy what can just as well be raised at home? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The California Fruits and How to Grow Them The writer desires to express sincere gratitude for the cordial welcome and patronage which the two earlier editions of this treatise have received, not only in California, but in other semitropical countries. At the time of the preparation of the first edition in 1889 there was no thought that it would find foreign fields of usefulness; it was merely the earnest hope of the writer that it would win its way as a safe guide to the extension of the fruit interests of California; and to that end no effort was spared to constitute the work an explicit and truthful statement of natural conditions attending fruit growing in California, and accurate descriptions of the practises which best minister to success under these conditions. The generous patronage bestowed upon the work by Californians for a decade is a demonstration that this purpose was attained, and it is largely owing to their cordial commendation that the work has extended so widely into foreign fields. It is profoundly satisfactory to the writer to have the assurance that the acceptance of the treatise as a faithful guide to practise in California has actually foreshadowed its popularity wherever the same fruits are grown; and, inversely, its acceptance abroad is indirect evidence of its accuracy and helpfulness in California. With such inspiration as naturally proceeds from these facts, the writer has for two years devoted such time as could be spared from other pressing duties to a thorough revision of the work, condensing portions which were diffuse or merely of passing, local interest, and expanding other portions which are of deep and lasting importance and in which California experience and experiment really involve knowledge new to horticultural literature and of the widest applicability. The revision has required a rewriting of the most important chapters and a study of original data nearly equal to that involved in the preparation of the treatise in the first instance. The illustrations have also been largely replaced and the work brought up to the beginning of the century. As was done in connection with earlier editions, the writer desires to extend to all readers an exhortation to correction of any statement which may seem unwarranted from their points of view and experience. The subject is varied, multifold, and involved, every new fact is important and will be welcomed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Home Fruit Growing in California This circular is designed for those who wish to grow fruit and nuts on a small scale for their own use and not for those who may grow fruit as a business. Although nearly all the fruits that the amateur can hope to produce are already available in our home markets, many of us desire to raise something of our own. As a matter of economics, home fruit grow ing is a poor investment; but happily, no matter how much we may try to convince ourselves to the contrary, we grow home fruits not for mone tary gain but as a labor of love. There is a pride of possession in produc ing some nice fruit, for it can be done; but the work is primarily a sport or recreation. It is the creative instinct that makes us want to dig in the soil and plant something. The fructifying soil holds great mystery for us all. As most people know, growing things out of the earth is a gamble, where skill and chance combine to make a most fascinating game. If we persist until we acquire skill and wisdom; study our plants, treat them properly, protect them from their enemies, we may be rewarded with all the fruit we can use and (best of all) with some to present to our friends, which is the sweetest of all rewards for the amateur. As already mentioned, this publication is intended to help the begin ner. Whereas practically all of our books and experiment-station publi cations on the subject were written for commercial fruit growers, this circular is frankly for the amateur, and all the discussions will be from his standpoint. The professional orchardist is always cautioned, for ex ample, to select a site having the climate, soil, water, and marketing facilities that will promote his financial success. The homeowner, on the other hand, must use the site he has, whether all conditions are fav crable or not. His back yard may be only a second or a third-rate location for fruit, but he wants to use it. Fortunately, practices unjustifiable on a large scale may be followed in a small way: Poor soil can be greatly modified and ameliorated if one will go to the necessary trouble and ex pense. To provide for a few trees only, a swampy spot may be reclaimed, an unfavorable soil or subsoil completely made over. Individual fruits or even whole clusters may be protected against diseases and insects by enclosing them in bags made of paper, gauze, or cellophane. Even the mean temperature for a few trees may be raised considerably in a cold. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fruit Growing for Amateurs The cultivation of fruit trees, if practised with care and dis crimination, proves of absorbing interest, and is profitable. If, however, the work is commenced by the inexperienced without due inquiry, and in ignorance of essential details of cultivation, failure, comparative if not absolute, is inevitable. Providing the amateur plants a representative selection of fruits, and disposes them in the positions best suited to their needs, he will not have long to wait for some return on his outlay. He should plant not only Apple, Pear, Plum, Peach, and Cherry - none of which gives a fair cr0p until several years have passed - but Strawberry, Raspberry, Gooseberry, and Currant. If Strawberries are planted in late summer a. Cr0p of excellent fruits may be obtained the following year, and the bush fruits quickly come into bearing. By widening the scope of his fruit garden the amateur adds not only to its interest, but secures a profitable return in as short a time as possible. If walls are available it should be the object of the gardener to cover them without delay, for wall area is valuable. The simplest way to do this is to plant trained standards between the fan-trained trees or espaliers; in the course of years the latter will spread and occupy the whole wall area, but, meanwhile, much fruit can be obtained from the trained standard trees planted to fill the upper part of the wall. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular Fruit Growing: Prepared Especially for Beginners and as a d104 Book for Schools and Colleges The development of the teaching of Agriculture has made necessary, and has been largely dependent on, the making of textbooks of various kinds adapted to the special technical work for which our best agricultural schools stand. When these agricultural colleges started there were no textbooks adapted to their special lines of work, and the demand necessitated the hasty preparation of textbooks which are now being replaced by those that are more complete and better adapted In every way for teaching purposes. This book is the result of the development of the teaching of Fruit Growing in the University of Minnesota and is, in a way, a compilation of lectures on Fruit Growing given to the students which have been carefully revised and considerably extended. At the end of each chapter are suggestive questions on the matter presented. An appendix is added which contains formulas for fungicides, Insecticides and grafting waxes, etc.; lists of fruits recommended for special typical states and rules for naming fruits. The fruit lists are from the professors of Horticulture of the various Agricultural Colleges and from secretaries of the various Horticultural Societies. In the preparation of this work I have had the earnest and intelligent assistance of Miss Jeannette Foster. I am also under obligations to my assistant in Horticulture, Mr. A. R. Kohler, who prepared the pages on Spraying and Spraying machinery; to Mr. Elvin Peterson, student of the College of Agriculture, who has made many of the drawings; to Prof. Frederick Washburn for cuts which he has loaned; to Prof. E. M. Freeman for many suggestions embodied in the chapter on Plant Diseases and to Mr. A. G. Ruggles for suggestions in regard to the chapter on Insects Injurious to Fruits. I am also under obligations to those who have assisted by furnishing data for the fruit list and In other ways aided in its preparation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Fruit Trees and Plants, 1902, Vol. 1 Aking into consideration its hardiness, productiveness and general commercial value, the Apple T stands at the head of our list of fruits. In selecting the most important varieties for cultiva tion, it has been our constant aim to secure only those of standard excellence, and in no instance to recommend a novelty without ascertaining its history from a reliable source. Although a few of the kinds herein enumerated are almost universally popular everywhere, others are not satisfactory except in certain favored localities. Notwithstanding our main crop of trees consists principally of the follow ing kinds, yet we can also supply several other varieties of local reputation. For the convenience of planters we have divided the list of varieties into sections, according to their ripening season. This is intended for the latitude of the middle states, consequently those residing further north or south should make due allowance for their respective locations.
