The point to be kept in view is, in the main, how to unite in the best way practical equipment and artistic effect; and this can be accomplished only by the employment of taste, knowledge, experience and judgment. To furnish a home, therefore, requires serious thought, when the end to be attained is one of harmony, simplicity and refinement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Buy Furniture for the Home There are just as many points to be considered and looked for in buying an inexpensive rocking chair as in selecting a period suite which must carry with it carv ings and other lines which were in vogue at the time of its conception. Lack of knowledge in selecting home furnishings is false economy. A poor selection usually results, in time, in a better and wiser purchase, and a knowledge of how to select carefully and wisely at first will prove a great saving. People of today live too fast and usually do not take time enough in studying and selecting furnishings for their house - furnishings that must last perhaps a life time. Owing to the carelessness of some purchasers, complete outfits have been sold in a very few minutes. It takes time to go through a large stock and make comparisons and the best selections. If time is limited, it is policy to wait until one can use the required time for this very important work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Better Homes: How to Furnish Them His little book is dedicated to the interest of all who appreciate the value of an artistic, harmonious home. It suggests room plans and color schemes, and illustrates beautiful pieces to go with them. It was not the intention of the interior decorator who worked out these schemes, that hard and fast rules should be laid down. He only hopes to offer a guide which will aid in the successful expression of individual taste. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hints on House Furnishing Perhaps these are trite things to say, but trite things are Often neglected truths, to the meaning of which we have been blinded by custom. The more reasonable they seem to be at a first glance, the less likely we are to ponder them until we know the full extent of their reasonableness. We go wrong in the household arts, not because our rash adventures have the charm of novelty, are new and attractive, but because they are too familiar to be understood, and ought therefore to be looked at from a fresh standpoint, one of common reason. Grave writers say, for instance, without the least hesitation. That the arts belong to experts and connoisseurs, and that laymen cannot hope to be on familiar terms with them: an opinion not in the least likely to encourage the public, nor is it borne out by well-known events. Moliere's housekeeper was an excellent critic, Shake speare made a fortune by pleasing the London people, and laymen today are the main patrons of art, let their judgment be false or true. The principles of home decoration are held up as great mysteries, yet their appeals to the mind are quite simple and tangible, like the laws of cricket and football. The difficulty is to play the game well after the rules are learnt by heart. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inexpensive Furnishings in Good Taste Although the Doctor's daughter had known nothing of the country of her birth, she appeared to have innately derived from it that ability to make much of little means, which is one of its most useful and most agreeable characteristics. Simple as the furniture was, it was set off by so many little adornments, of no value but for their taste and fancy, that its effect was delightful. The disposition of everything in the rooms, from the largest object to the least; the arrangement of colors, the elegant variety and contrast obtained by thrift, in trifles, by delicate hands, clear eyes, and good sense; were at once so pleasant in themselves, and so expressive of their originator, that, as Mr. Lorry stood looking about him, the very chairs and cables seemed to ask him, with something of that peculiar expression which he knew so well by this time whether he approved?" Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Furnishing: On Rational and AEsthetic Principles "The little volume is full of excellent suggestions for general guidance, and these suggestions may be applied almost as well to work in one style as to work in another. There is much, that is, which the possessor of a Gothic villa may turn to account; there is much that will be useful to the dweller in a house of the new Queen Anne style, and still more which will be of service to those who, living in the common terraces of our suburbs, desire to make their "interiors" as comely as they may be made without special adherence to a particular style, which circumstances make impossible, but with a general regard to good taste. The writer of this book seems very much impressed with the fact that in the making of our furniture right principles of construction will keep a thing valuable and pleasant, so that we may stick to it all our lives without fear of the caprice of fashion; and it is one of the merits of his book that, while very fully appreciating the great strides that have been made in the art of furniture and decoration during the last half-dozen years, he does not seek to impose on us the adoption of the style that at the moment of writing may chance to be the most fashionable. The writer is a man of practical experience and artistic feeling. He treats first of such matters as painting and papering - the preparation, that is, of the background against which every figure and every object in the rooms will have to be seen; and then he takes us to the furniture itself, suggesting of course, not each particular piece, but a scheme of general arrangement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Collect, Old Furniture I have endeavoured to trace the changes in style and fashion from Antique to Mediaeval, from Mediaeval to Renaissance, and from Renais sance to Modern, but in the following notes I have attempted to give the reader some descriptions of the various kinds of furniture, made in different countries, from the sixteenth to the middle of the nineteenth century, omitting the earlier periods. As examples of the latter are seldom seen except in museums, they are, for all practical purposes, unobtainable by the collector of ordinary means. I have tried to convey by explanatory hints and suggestions, advice which may enable the reader to select the example of the period he is in search of, and avoid the imitation and the sham. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Homes, and How to Beautify Them T is the way with some authors, when they desire to believe they have written a useful book, to say in the preface that it supplies a long-felt want. I should be glad if I could console myself with a similar pious fraud. But to advance such a plea, having regard to the large number of books which have been printed about furniture and the decoration of the house, would be to court sarcastic comment. For truly the name of such books is already legion. To begin with, there are the Histories of Furniture from the earliest periods to the present time profound, and occasionally interesting, compilations. Then there are the Books of Designs issued by furniture makers like Chippendale, Sheraton and Ince - forerunners of the modern Furniture Catalogue. Then there are the great number of pamphlets, treatises, and brochures written on the subject of Art in the Home, in which ladies with a pretty taste dogmatise in the nicest afternoon-tea manner on how to make artistic lamp-shades, paint door - panels, and beautify a drawing room with aesthetic remnants at I/rr% a yard.
