Book Synopsis Common misconceptions of Theosophical Doctrines removed by : Helena Petrovna Blavatsky
Download or read book Common misconceptions of Theosophical Doctrines removed written by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky and published by Philaletheians UK. This book was released on 2019-04-07 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Inner Man is a trinity, not a duality. By adding the physical body, he becomes a Tetractys, or quaternity. Plato never confused the périsprit with the soul or spirit. In common with every other philosopher, he called it neither nous nor psyche, but gave it the name eidolon, sometimes that of imago or simulacrum. The psychic element never seems to have been in the odour of sanctity, either with the Saints of Christianity or with the Philosophers of Paganism. Let us now compare this philosophic quaternary, composed of the body, the périsprit, the soul, and the spirit — to the ether and its subsequent correlations. Spirit is the personal god of each mortal and his only divine element. On the contrary, the dual soul is semidivine, i.e., potentially divine. It is only when the human individuality, soiled with earthly impurities, overcomes separateness and identifies itself with the divine intelligence within, that the aroma of personal experience can become immortal. Thought is a material force, although invisible. Let the least cerebral motion reverberate in the Ether of Space and it will produce a disturbance reaching to infinity. Nothing is stationary in nature; everything must advance or fall back, and an incurable drunkard, a debauchee wholly immersed in materiality, having never made the least effort towards the good, dead or living, will never make progress! Sentimentality has no place in our ranks; he who does not feel ready to sacrifice his dearest personal hopes to the Eternal Truth may become a member of the Theosophical Society, but will never belong to our Esoteric Circle. Our Masters are Patañjali, Kapila, Kanada, and all the systems and schools of Aryavarta which served as inexhaustible mines for the Greek philosophers, from Pythagoras to Proclus. It is based on the esoteric wisdom of ancient Egypt, where Moses, like Plato, went to learn from the Hierophants and Adepts in the East; it was therefore developed by methods that do not proceed by inference, but decide by strict analogy alone, and are based on the immutability of universal laws.
Book Synopsis Reading Joss Whedon by : Rhonda V. Wilcox
Download or read book Reading Joss Whedon written by Rhonda V. Wilcox and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2014-05-16 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an age when geek chic has come to define mainstream pop culture, few writers and producers inspire more admiration and response than Joss Whedon. From Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Much Ado About Nothing, from Dr. Horrible’s Sing–Along Blog to The Avengers, the works of Whedon have been the focus of increasing academic attention. This collection of articles represents some of the best work covering a wide array of topics that clarify Whedon’s importance, including considerations of narrative and visual techniques, myth construction, symbolism, gender, heroism, and the business side of television. The editors argue that Whedon’s work is of both social and aesthetic significance; that he creates “canonical television.” He is a master of his artistic medium and has managed this success on broadcast networks rather than on cable. From the focus on a single episode to the exploration of an entire season, from the discussion of a particular narrative technique to a recounting of the history of Whedon studies, this collection will both entertain and educate those exploring Whedon scholarship for the first time and those planning to teach a course on his works.

Download or read book On Not Dying written by Abou Farman and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2020-04-21 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ethnographic exploration of technoscientific immortality Immortality has long been considered the domain of religion. But immortality projects have gained increasing legitimacy and power in the world of science and technology. With recent rapid advances in biology, nanotechnology, and artificial intelligence, secular immortalists hope for and work toward a future without death. On Not Dying is an anthropological, historical, and philosophical exploration of immortality as a secular and scientific category. Based on an ethnography of immortalist communities—those who believe humans can extend their personal existence indefinitely through technological means—and an examination of other institutions involved at the end of life, Abou Farman argues that secular immortalism is an important site to explore the tensions inherent in secularism: how to accept death but extend life; knowing the future is open but your future is finite; that life has meaning but the universe is meaningless. As secularism denies a soul, an afterlife, and a cosmic purpose, conflicts arise around the relationship of mind and body, individual finitude and the infinity of time and the cosmos, and the purpose of life. Immortalism today, Farman argues, is shaped by these historical and culturally situated tensions. Immortalist projects go beyond extending life, confronting dualism and cosmic alienation by imagining (and producing) informatic selves separate from the biological body but connected to a cosmic unfolding. On Not Dying interrogates the social implications of technoscientific immortalism and raises important political questions. Whose life will be extended? Will these technologies be available to all, or will they reproduce racial and geopolitical hierarchies? As human life on earth is threatened in the Anthropocene, why should life be extended, and what will that prolonged existence look like?
