But what if society has it wrong? What if happiness isn't the goal at all? With her trademark candor and hilarious storytelling, MK paints a picture of a different life—one bursting with a force that is far more sustainable and vibrant: joy. Crazy Joy will help readers: Identify and reject ridiculous expectations that society has placed on their lives. Liberate their hearts from the comparison prison and feel content in their current circumstances. View themselves, inside and out, as the masterpiece creations they are. Find joy (and dare we say, laughter!) in the middle of life's biggest messes. Book excerpt: Weaving together his own spiritual journey, stories from his experience coaching others, and down-to-earth principles and practices, management consultant and Christian life coach Jeff Spadafora helps readers find the joy in a life that is more vibrant and real than any they have experienced before. An increasing number of American Christians are frustrated. Even as they read their Bibles, listen to sermons, and hang out with other Christians, they become painfully aware that something is missing: joy. As a result, many have given up on their faith being a source of joy, and instead they seek meaning, purpose, and joy through their Christian service, work, relationships, hobbies, possessions, or even more destructive and hollow substitutes. The Joy Model offers a better way, showing readers that joy comes from balancing the practical and spiritual sides of our lives—the “Doing” and the “Being” of the Christian life. Jeff Spadafora reveals a plan to uncover significant increases in joy, including: tried and true disciplines to engage God practically a blueprint to move from knowing about God to actually experiencing him practical steps to let our new understanding of God transform relationships, attitudes, finances, service, and work

Book excerpt: The idea of this women's magazine originated with Samuel Williams, a Cincinnati Methodist, who thought that Christian women needed a magazine less worldly than Godey's Lady's Book and Snowden's Lady's Companion. Written largely by ministers, this exceptionally well-printed little magazine contained well-written essays of a moral character, plenty of poetry, articles on historical and scientific matters, and book reviews. Among western writers were Alice Cary, who contributed over a hundred sketches and poems, her sister Phoebe Cary, Otway Curry, Moncure D. Conway, and Joshua R. Giddings; and New England contributors included Mrs. Lydia Sigourney, Hannah F. Gould, and Julia C.R Dorr. By 1851, each issue published a peice of music and two steel plates, usually landscapes or portraits. When Davis E. Clark took over the editorship in 1853, the magazine became brighter and attained a circulation of 40,000. Unlike his predecessors, Clark included fictional pieces and made the Repository a magazine for the whole family. After the war it began to decline and in 1876 was replaced by the National Repository. The Ladies' Repository was an excellent representative of the Methodist mind and heart. Its essays, sketches, and poems, its good steel engravings, and its moral tone gave it a charm all its own. -- Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing from Jesus words to the disciples to become like children, Marilyn McCord Adams presents more than two hundred fifty original prayers that serve as powerful and practical examples of how adults can pray in a manner that combines the complexity and richness of their adult experiences with the candor, immediacy, demands, and expectations of a child. The prayers in this collection encourage us to move to a deeper level of intimacy and openness to God, which McCord Adams believes will compel us to bring the pressing problems facing us directly to God. This resource, which can be used by those who lead public worship as well as those who seek to grow closer to God in private, includes prayers that address social and personal concerns such as peace, justice, care of the environment, and responding to Gods call.
