Book excerpt: This study examined community college criminal justice faculty experiences and perceptions with active learning, an alternative to traditional lecture. It also identified factors that promote and discourage use of active learning. This study used a basic qualitative research design and followed a conceptual framework merging the scholarship of active learning instruction, criminal justice courses, and community college settings. Nationally, community college students have low degree completion rates, and active learning represents a method to increase student success. Active learning is ideal for criminal justice courses given the controversial and complex issues that the criminal justice system addresses. The sample consisted of seven full-time and adjunct community college criminal justice faculty from three community colleges in Northern Illinois. The findings indicate that the participants do use several types of active learning and that faculty perceptions of active learning are positive and supportive. Nevertheless, this does not suggest that active learning methods are preferred at all times. The findings reveal that factors intrinsic and extrinsic to the faculty member promote use of active learning. Content related factors and student and faculty related factors discourage use of active learning.
