And if he hadn’t invented it, would we be still living in the dark? Acclaimed author Matt Ridley (The Rational Optimist, The Evolution of Everything) explains that at least 20 other people can lay claim to this breakthrough moment. Ridley argues that the light bulb emerged from the combined technologies and accumulated knowledge of the day – it was bound to emerge sooner or later. Based on his 2018 Hayek Memorial Lecture, Ridley contends that innovation – from invention through to development and commercialisation – is the most important unsolved problem in all of human society. We rely on it – but we do not fully understand it, we cannot predict it and we cannot direct it. In How Many Light Bulbs Does It Take to Change the World? Ridley examines the nature of innovation – and how people often fear its consequences. He dispels the myth that automation destroys jobs – and demonstrates how innovation leads to economic growth. And he argues that intellectual property rights, originally intended to encourage innovation, are now being used by big business to defend their monopolies. Ridley concludes that innovation is a mysterious and under-appreciated process that we discuss too rarely, hamper too much and value too little.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All of us search for light. We seek enlightenment, understanding, and answers. We seek hope. So many people grope through smothering spiritual darkness reaching for something to bring light into their lives. Some even think they’ve found it in other things. After all, it would be easy for a blind person to think he’s found light if he’s never seen it or experienced it for himself. But there is only one way to find the light we really need and to be able to live the Christian life in successful obedience, and that is to let the true Light flood our hearts. Fruitful, joy-filled, victorious living happens only as we are spiritually enlightened through the truth of the Word of God and by the inner working of the Spirit of God. Through humor and stories, Rhonda Rhea explores many of the almost 300 references to light in the Bible to draw us back to the real light found in Christ. This light is the only light that can provide change in our lives, and is ultimately not just a light that changes us, but the lives of those we come in contact with as well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital Photography was first introduced to the general public around 1989, depending in what part of the world you were during that time. Since then, people have been getting rid of their film cameras and turning them in for new DSLR’s (Digital Single Lens Reflex) which has given photographer many new options to choose from that they didn’t have with film cameras. Since DSLR’s affords so many options, unless you know a lot about digital photography, you might think that if you went out and purchased a $2000.00 camera you’d be able to take photographs just like a National Geographic photographer. But just buying an expensive camera won’t make you take better photographs then you did with your film camera. When I teach my Basic Digital Photography I tell the class that you need to first and foremost, you need to “learn the language of photography” which is not as easy as one may think. Learning how to “make photographs rather than take photographs” requires one to understand the many options that digital photography has to offer. Most people get frustrated in learning how to use their camera and just wind up setting the automatic setting on the camera which defeats the whole purpose of buying a digital camera in the first place. Because a digital camera gives more options to the photographer, what this booklet does is cut the many options down to three basic camera controls. Once you’ve learn the three controls you can move on in learning more advanced options of the camera.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Explor[es] the underlying history and psychology of public discourse . . . should be required reading for politicians and public advocates.” —Real Change The most pressing problem we face today is not climate change. It is pollution in the public square, where a toxic smog of adversarial rhetoric, propaganda, and polarization stifles discussion and debate, creating resistance to change and thwarting our ability to solve our collective problems. In this second edition of I’m Right and You’re an Idiot, James Hoggan grapples with this critical issue, through interviews with outstanding thinkers and drawing on wisdom from highly regarded public figures. Featuring a new, radically revised prologue, afterword, and a new chapter addressing the changes in the public discourse since the 2016 US election, his comprehensive analysis explores: · How political will is manipulated · How tribalism shuts down open-minded thinking, undermines trust, and helps misinformation thrive · Why facts alone fail and how language is manipulated and dissent silenced · The importance of dialogue, empathy, and pluralistic narrative reframing arguments to create compelling narratives and spur action. Our species’ greatest survival strategy has always been foresight and the ability to leverage intelligence to overcome adversity. For too long now this capacity has been threatened by the sorry state of public discourse. Focusing on proven techniques to foster more powerful and effective communication, I’m Right and You’re an Idiot will appeal to readers looking for deep insights and practical advice in these troubling times. “This is a must-read for anyone tired of the bullying, the propagandizing, the screaming, and the bullsh*t.” —Dr. Samantha Nutt, author of Damned Nations: Greed, Guns, Armies and Aid

This book was released on 2018-12-21 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every fall, a new crop of college freshmen arrives on campuses eager to acquire skills that will prepare them for the workplace, to join organizations that support causes they care about, and to establish meaningful relationships with their peers. Less visible are the new professors who aspire to make a difference in students’ lives, make ground-breaking discoveries, publish scholarship that influences their fields and forge lifelong collaborations with colleagues. Most importantly, these students and faculty seek acceptance beyond admittance and employment. While this desire for acceptance is universal, there is no guarantee of achieving it. For some, simply settling in often is not possible. This anthology discloses the experiences of members of the academic community who know this fight all too well. By taking a deep dive into the minds and hearts of students and faculty members who identify as “other” and by disclosing their awkward, funny and painful experiences, this book aims to caution newcomers to the academy, to equip teachers to identify and discuss inequity in the classroom, to call out perpetrators and perpetuators of injustice, and to provoke change, if not in the academic community as a whole then in each individual reader. Recognizing that the case for doing and being better cannot be made with statistics alone, this book uses storytelling to bring to light the impact of discrimination on a very personal level. The writers in this collection put their stories out there to remind readers that others like them suffer in silence.
