Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn how to focus your ministry’s programs and services on the elderly By 2030, 20% of the people living in the United States will be age 65 or older, with unique spiritual needs that can affect their physical and mental well-being. Ministering to Older Adults answers the critical need for a ministry that doesn’t center primarily on youth and families in its outreach, instead presenting a step-by-step guide to developing a ministry for the aged that is focused on the needs and resources of each congregation. This program has been used effectively with nearly 50 congregations, both large and small, to create a focused older adult ministry. No two congregations are alike. The resources, perspectives, and skills of each congregation are different, as are the needs of its members. Ministering to Older Adults provides a framework for use by planning groups within communities of any religious tradition. The book presents a process that includes essential questions that allow planning groups to develop answers that fit the needs, cultural, history, and structure of their individual congregations. Ministering to Older Adults is divided into three sections: “The Fundamentals”—defining your audience, your mission, and the skills and existing programs that can be brought to the planning process “Programming Possibilities”—spiritual needs based on the aging process, continued learning for older adults, opportunities to serve and be served, providing quality pastoral care, and community building “Putting it All Together”—deciding on a direction, using desired outcomes for evaluation, establishing target dates, and ongoing evaluation Ministering to Older Adults also includes forms and charts to help in the planning process. The book is an invaluable resource for clergy, ministry committees and planning groups, and staff persons responsible for older adult ministries.

Book excerpt: Senior Adult Discipleship is composed of nine essentials for doing quality Christian education for the senior adult age group. This age group is generally thought of as adults who are age sixty-five and older. Church leaders simply must be led to address this major segment of believers and especially new members now. Churches will soon discover baby boomers are already joining the retirement ranks. The impact of this growth is already being felt in churches and in society. This book will help pastors, church staff members, church lay leaders, and church members to commit themselves to make a difference for Christ through quality discipleship of senior adults. To fail to disciple current and new Christians, including those who are senior adults, is unacceptable in light of the urgency of Jesus in commissioning the early disciples. The senior adult age group is important to the enrichment of this special group and the overall work of Christ in the ministry of local churches. Furthermore, the concern of this book is not just to suggest ways to minister to senior adults. Rather, the book also emphasizes providing resources for leading senior adults themselves to engage in ministry. This book is part of a series that provides the essentials for effective church ministry to all age groups. The titles of the books in this series are as follows: Preschool Christian Education; Children's Christian Education; Youth/Collegiate Christian Education; Adult Christian Education. An additional book, Christian Education Leadership, provides a comprehensive overview of Christian education for all ages.Bernard M. Spooner, Ph.D., general editor, has a lifetime of experience in helping churches, including fifteen years as a local church minister and more than three decades as a seminary and university professor and denominational leader. He served as the first dean of what is now the Graduate School of Ministry of Dallas Baptist University, Dallas, Texas.

Book excerpt: A companion to the author's earlier book Designing an Older Adult Ministry (Discipleship Resources, 1999), this book will provide new information and outline ways to develop and strengthen ministries by, with, and for older adults that can, and will, enhance the spiritual growth and well-being of people of all ages. The church is beginning to recognize that there are vast numbers of older people in its membership. The church is uniquely positioned to help older adults respond to the challenges of aging; to see the tremendous potentialities in the lives of older adult for making the church and community better; and to assist older people as they experience new meaning and purpose in their later lives. Chapters include "Why Older-Adult Ministries?"; "Understanding the Aging Process"; "Aging and the Spiritual Journey"; "The New Seniors: Boomers?"; "Intentional Ministry by, with, and for Older Adults"; "Organizing for Intentional Ministry in the Local Church"; "Organizing for Intentional Ministry in the Conference"; "Congregational Care Ministry"; "Additional Ideas for Intentional Ministry"; and "Trends in Aging." Appendixes include a "Facts about Aging" quiz, information on creating and using older adult surveys, and suggested resources for further reading and study.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The success of the church depends on the support of effective and dynamic Christian leaders. Churches do acknowledge that there is a lack of innovative and formal processes for developing leaders for church ministries. Leaders may be articulate, but have not embraced leadership skills. This is especially true for the leadership of senior ministries since we live in a youth culture society. There is an absence of ministries that focus on seniors who are over the age of sixty. There is a need to see the potential that seniors have for contributing viable service to the church and community. Seniors cannot be characterized as being the same. Some older adults see themselves as declining while others see themselves as active and vigorous. The myths and untruths about aging can be debunked by accepting the realities of aging. Seniors can help others see the realities of aging by expressing what they need and want. Investigating church leadership and the characteristics of senior adults revealed how an intentional senior ministry can be integrated into the church. Using questionnaires, intense group sessions and case studies, data was collected from an urban African American church that has a century of history and tradition. Information came from two sources: (a) church leaders; and (b) senior adults, age 65+. The investigation produced a Senior Action Plan (SAP) that will assist the church in organizing a ministry for seniors. The plan can be a model for all churches and denominations. Churches who do not recognize the new face of senior congregations will be left behind and miss out on opportunities for service.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This thesis focuses on senior adult ministry expansion in small church congregation setting. Research suggests that with an expected increase of older adults in society, churches will also need to examine how they meet senior's physical, spiritual, and social needs. Senior adult ministry benefits both seniors and their families but also faces barriers. These barriers may include time and talent constraints, funding limitations, and inadequate training for church leadership. Smaller church congregations may be especially vulnerable to these barriers by nature of their size. This research examined attitudes toward senior adult ministry in a church with an average weekly attendance of fewer than 200 congregants. Through use of surveys and a focus group, the researcher found that attitudes toward senior adult ministry were positive and the church congregation supports possible expansion of these ministries. Based on these findings, the researcher recommends that the church take steps to integrate these findings into meaningful ministry expansion. Future research in this area might include replicating the study in similar church congregations to determine if comparable outcomes are found and if these churches can collaborate in senior ministry expansion efforts."--leaf 4.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will give you examples and ideas for ministry with older adults living in retirement communities. Blue Valley Christian Church sold their building and a year later began a ministry to worship with and to senior adults living in community. Details on their ministry, how they began, how they developed relationships and the struggles they needed to overcome are found in this book. If you are looking for ways to invest in people, and have outreach giving be the largest part of your budget, then this book is for you. It is a great resource for a group study to help your congregation discern if God is calling them to a ministry to and with senior adults. Maybe you are called to sell your building and develop a partnership with an independent and assisted living community or maybe you are called to keep your building but partner with another church and make this a part of your ministry through your gifts of time, talents, material goods and finances. Pastor Lois would love to talk to your community about this journey. You can reach her through messages on the church Facebook page, HCC FKA Blue Valley Christian Church. You can check out their website at https: //www.ministering2seniors.org/ .
